Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta donated his Medal of Honor to Brigade He Says Earned It... Soldier Gives His Medal of Honor to the Brigade He Says Earned It 9 Jul 2017 | In a ceremony marking the 173rd's new memorial Sal Giunta unfastened the medal's ribbon and handed it to the brigade commander.
That's not S/Sgt. Giunta's decision to make. Did Giunta also transferred all of the bennies that come along with the CMH to the brigade ? The U.S. military has numerous unit citation that are awarded to units. For example the Presidential Unit Citation is equal to the Navy Cross or the Army's Distinguish Service Cross as if every member of the unigt earned the Navy Cross or Army's Distinguish Service Cross. The Army's Unit Award Emblem is equal to the Silver Star as if every member of the unit earned the Silver Star. There is no unit citation equal to every member earning the CMH. Unlike officers, enlisted men have to earn their medals going beyond what is expected of you. During the Vietnam War when an office was given the Bronze Star we called it the Officers Good Conduct Medal. Just about every officer who served in Vietnam got one. Enlisted men had to earn the Bronze Star. It seems someone high up in the chain of command decided that the 173rd Airborne Brigade didn't do anything out of what was expected of them in combat during 2010 to be awarded any combat unit citation. The last time the 173rd Airborne Brigade was awarded the PUC was in 1967 in Vietnam. The 173rd Airborne Brigade was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation in Vietnam for it's outstanding achievement of service in combat from 1965 - 1967 and again Iraq from 2003 - 2004.
