Kamala Harris Flip-Flops Again on Private Health Insurance: ‘Very Little’

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) has flip-flopped again on the question of whether her health care proposal would allow for private health insurance, telling CNN on Tuesday evening that there would be “very little” of it under her plan.
In January, Harris said during a CNN town hall that she supported ending private health insurance as part of her support for “Medicare for All” legislation: “Let’s eliminate all of that. Let’s move on.”

Harris then walked back that claim, after it provoked criticism and outrage. But last month, at the first Democratic debate, she raised her hand when the candidates were asked by the moderator which of them would “abolish [Americans’] private health insurance in favor of a government-run plan.”

Being indecisive yet again, Kamala has demonstrated her inability to lead.

First she wanted to get rid of private health insurance, then she did-and now she says she wants a little. Sigh.

The entire democrat primary has really been a clown show.

This article is bullshit. They change a word in what she was asked at the debate. That is not what the question was!

You are leaving out some context.

“Let’s eliminate all of that. Let’s move on” doesn't mean abolishing private insurance and even you couldn't include private insurance in the quote. From her statement, it could have easily referred to our dependence on private insurance, rather than actually outlawing private insurance. The statement isn't very clear and you can't really determine a solid policy proposal from her statement.

As for the town hall where she raised her hand on abolishing private insurance, she said right after that she misunderstood the question. We often mishear stuff we hear and make mistakes in the heat of the moment so I will accept corrections candidates make after the debate if they made a mistake, including Trump.

Instead of guessing her position from indeterminate statements, look at the bills she has supported. She supported Obamacare which allows private insurance. She supported the Medicare for All bill, which bans private insurance from covering the same things Medicare for all does, but allows them to cover things beyond what Medicare for all does.

So private insurance won't be a replacement but an addition to public healthcare. It also doesn't make any sense that someone will pay taxes for public insurance, and then pay healthcare premiums for private insurance for redundant coverage of the same stuff. Also, no universal healthcare system outright bans private insurance, this position doesn't make sense. So she wants to reduce the role of private insurance but not eliminate it. So her latest statement that she won't ban private healthcare is consistent with her actions, and the last two statements could have easily been misinterpretations and mistakes.

Also, while we are talking about flip flops, look at Trump. Back in 2000, Trump said he was liberal on healthcare and said he supported universal healthcare. In 2016 and 2017 he praised the Australian single-payer healthcare system calling it better than ours. He also promised that under his healthcare everybody would be covered and he didn't want people dying in the streets. He also promised this healthcare at a fraction of the cost. Today, he now support rolling back public healthcare coverage, says we will have to pay more for healthcare, and has no plan for universal healthcare.
