CLEARVIEW TOWNSHIP – What would possess someone to give up a successful career as a physician to become a politician?

For Kellie Leitch, it's about public service.

It's a lesson she learned when she was a youngster growing up in western Canada.

Leitch said her upbringing is rooted in the wheat fields of Manitoba and the oil sands of Alberta.

Leitch was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba but her family roots are in Brandon.

She says both sides of her family are from the second largest city in the province.

"My great grandparents on the Leitch side came from Scotland, reached the end of the railway in Portage la Prairie, walked another 150 kms and built a mud shack in the late 1800s," she said.

She is the oldest of three children born to Kit and Lynne Leitch. She said her parents met while her father was attending university and her mother was working.

Leitch said she only called Manitoba home for three years before Kit packed up the family and moved to the Northern Alberta city of Fort McMurray and founded a construction company.

"I grew up in Fort McMurray," she said.

Fort McMurray is now a vibrant community known for its connection to the oil industry.

"McMurray at that time, would have been the size of Stayner," she recalls.

She said her father's company helped build the community, a third of it anyway.

"This is a guy (Kit) who was an academic who went out to Fort McMurray Alberta, which was really like going out to the edge of the earth. Started a construction company that built a third of the city at that time," she said. "They were pioneers in making the oil sands in becoming a reality of Canadians."

Her mother Lynne, was a stay-at-home mom.

"She was very proud of that," she said.

Leitch said her mom had a Grade 10 education but taught her some of the lessons that would shape her life - the most important one being service to her community. Whether it was as a member of the Kinette Club, assisting the marching band or volunteering for the YMCA, she said her mom made sure she and her siblings took pride in where they lived.

"She's the reason why all three of us are so community and public service oriented," she said. "When we first moved to McMurray, there wasn't a kindergarten teacher so she became the kindergarten teacher."

Leitch said while growing up in Fort McMurray, her mother taught her to treat everyone fairly and never to exclude anyone.

Leitch said it was her mom who encouraged the children to pursue academics or a skilled trade.

"She wanted all of us to be successful professionally," she said.

Leitch didn't waste anytime.

A smart kid, she skipped the sixth grade, graduated from high school at age 16 and started university at 17.

She said at age 20, she was working on her MD while at the same time completing her undergrad degree.

"All my close friends called me Doogie," she said referring to the 1980s television show Doogie Howser MD, which sees a teenager become a practicing physician.

In 1989, at age 18, her world was rocked.

After a battle with breast cancer, her mother Lynne died.

"When she became ill, she focused even more on that (community service)," she recalls. "We had 500 or 600 people come to her funeral."

Leitch said while she was in university, she had no idea what she wanted to do.

"I ended up in medical school a little bit by mistake," she said. "I wasn't really that focused."

She said it was her father who made certain she wasn't going to leave university.

"He said 'if you think at the age of 19 you're going to come back to Fort McMurray and work for our construction company or go into the work force, think again. Pick a lane,'" she recalls. "I applied to medical school because I thought it was the lesser of all evils to me. I had no interest in being a physician."

She said like most Canadians, she largely paid her own way in university. She said her father helped her out, but her education was paid for by student loans, bursaries and scholarships and part-time jobs.

One of those jobs was working for MPP David Turnbull. The other was operating her own student moving company for two years during the summer.

"I was trying to figure out if I'd go and get a regular job and be around for my siblings," she said. "My dad had this idea that I should run my own little business so I would learn how to do that. There wasn't a good small moving company or courier service (in Fort McMurray)," she said.

Leitch said during her campaign that running this business gave her some understanding of what small businesses go through.

"I learned about managing staff and dealing with clients," she said.

Leitch said she was really busy for five or six days a month and the rest of the time could take care of her siblings.

During her second and third year in medical school, Leitch said she didn't see the inside of a classroom. She said becoming a physician isn't just about reading textbooks.

"I have a very good memory, it's served me well," she said.

She said she attended all of the clinical courses but had other interests including being involved in the campus association for the Conservative Party.

However, it was in third year her life changed.

"The provincial and federal medical associations agreed that there should be portability across the country," she said.

This forced students to choose if they wanted to be a family doctor or pick a specialty.

"It forced me to choose in third year medicine what I wanted to do with my life," she said.

It was an elective course at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto under Dr. Jim Wright that made her become a pediatric orthopedic surgeon.

"I love my job. I get to take care of kids everyday and get them back playing on the playground. It's very satisfying," she said.

In her role as a physician, Leitch works as a trauma surgeon, helps fix broken bones and also sees kids with debilitating diseases such as cerebral palsy.

She said as a physician, there are people you can rely on, the senior resident and other colleagues.

"The first time I entered into an operating room when I was the staff, I was in charge, it was a daunting experience," she said.

Leitch recalls one incident as a trauma surgeon where a four-year old in London was hit by a tractor-trailer. He had a severely damaged pelvic bone and a broken femur.

"I've had circumstances as a trauma surgeon you sort of take a deep gulp when you have to talk to the parents about what you have to do," she said. "It was the first time I had to have a conversation with some parents where I couldn't tell them their child was going to be alive after the surgical procedure. I will never forget speaking to his parents." The child lived.

Leitch moved to her home in Clearview Township - a rural piece of land just outside Creemore - in 2005.

"I came here because this is like home," she said. "It was like home and the people are like home. They are very grounded and if you ask someone a question and they give you a straightforward answer."

While living in Toronto, she made a comment to her father that there was "no sense of community."

Leitch said she also lived in Los Angeles for a year while training. She said there was a sense of community in the hospitals but outside of that she called it "very lonely and impersonal"

"I lived in condos, I was sick of that. I grew up with a backyard," she said. "I know it's fine if I walk next door and ask for a cup of sugar, they are going to give me a cup of sugar. It's the neighbourly thing to do. Living in downtown Toronto as a resident I would never go next door and ask my neighbour for a cup of sugar. It just wouldn't happen."

Leitch has been involved in politics since she was a teenager.

Her father became a riding president and a campaign manager for a family friend who was seeking office.

They wanted to get some young people involved in the campaign.

"Myself and the children of the other members of the executive were the first targets," she said.

She said her family were Conservatives but nobody had ever run for political office and it wasn't something she was pressured to do.

Leitch was involved in Jim Flaherty's leadership campaign and also helped develop the Children's Fitness Tax Credit, but never thought of a career in politics.

Until, Flaherty came calling.

"I was in clinic. My clinic is a like a concrete bunker. My Blackberry doesn't work, my phone doesn't work. I had just come out of clinic and he phoned," she said. "He called and said I think you should run for this nomination. I love my practice, we've had this conversation in the past. I'm flattered, but no."

He persisted.

"You're home is there. You love being there," she said. "On a regular basis for the next few months, he would call about it."

Leitch was aware of the issues happening with then MP Helena Guergis but said she only knew what she was reading in the papers.

Leitch said it was a tough decision.

"It took a lot of conversations with my dad. A lot of conversations with mentors," she said. "I know it was depicted that it was a forgone conclusion and that the decision was made before it was ever made. I slept fine but it was always in the back of my mind for the three or four months."

She said Flaherty finally convinced her.

"Having the Minister of Finance for the country encouraging you to run is a strong endorsement. He said if you truly want to do public service for this country, you should step up now," she said. "I will never see a million children in my clinic. It was an opportunity to have a broader impact on Canadians, which I'm not afforded by standing in my operating room."

She was elected by a wide margin in May and said she is getting used to her role. She operates on five hours sleep and is usually up by 6 a.m.

Leitch said her mom was the same way, in bed by midnight, up at five.

She is finding the parliamentary secretary roles keep her busy but said she would still like to have a family.

"I love kids, I would like to have some of my own," she said. "I've been very focused of making sure other people's children are healthy in the past."

Kellie...... I would like to draw your attention to one anecdotal case that I personally suspect
has a great deal of potential and I wish to relate this back to part of my own platform for my own
campaign for the office of National Leader of Canada's Conservative Party.

My father in law was diagnosed with prostate cancer over five years ago.

His prostate was removed but he was told that the cancer had metastasized behind his lungs
and there was nothing more that could be done for him. (This was while he was still living in
Quito, Ecuador).

It was suggested to him that he should begin to take a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water daily.....
he decided that he had nothing to lose........... so why not?

He and his wife and son and family are now living in Miami and all of his physicians are shocked
that he has zero cancer cells in his blood.

Yes... this is merely one case but..........
low cost..... natural, potential cures for cancer will NOT be researched effectively......
due to the fact that it costs millions, (actually hundreds of millions of dollars) to properly
test a new treatment........ so a product that cannot be patented gives the large Pharma
companies little incentive to test something as simple as baking soda mixed with water!

The alternative?

Finance the testing of certain low cost natural products through the newly created
Conservative Party Volunteerism Hour or Dollar........... and combine the research with
hospitals and universities in the nation of Israel so that......... this new currency can
eventually be linked with the Israeli shekel.

I want to let you know the primary reason why I left Canada's Liberal Party in December of 2015 and
joined your Conservative Party in January of 2016.

At the G-8 in 2011 Prime Minister Stephen Harper set me an example of how to live that so impressed
me that even though I was a Liberal at the time that I wrote the following........ I had to give him credit
for his phenomenal courage, chutzpah and wisdom.

I am a member of a different Canadian political party but……… I have to admit that P. M. Stephen Harper is for good reason regarded as a rather "Davidic" figure by a high percentage of Israelis.

What he did for Israel back in 2011 at the G-8 was one of the most courageous and wise acts by a political leader that I have seen since I began to watch world events back in the '70's!

and attempt to apply the principle stated by Rabbi Nachman of Breslov and Ms. Betsy Otter Thompson.

Dr. Leitch....... my apologies to the degree that I am incorect..... but it is my opinion that if active members of
virtually all major Canadian political parties will increase our level of cooperation...... 35 million Canadians will
benefit from this paradigm shift in politics.

It is my honest opinion that P. M. Justin Trudeau deserves a lot of credit for some of the things that he does........
even though what he says and does, in my opinion isn't the ideal way for a Prime Minister to behave........ still......
it is obvious to me that P. M. Trudeau is a man of courage and conviction.

Although what he stated in a private meeting with two famous pastors and their wives.... is not what I would have said.....
(at least I don't think so)...... none the less....... his statements to Pastor Steve Long shows that P. M. Trudeau is
not your typical politician. He also has a lot of courage and chutzpah!

- While I am very disappointed that Stephen Harper hasn't changed the abortion laws in Canada with his majority government, I do feel that he matches the moral law of God better than the other party leaders. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau..... deserves credit for courage...... because no mere politician who is out
to make everybody happy with them...... .would have said what he did to Pastor Steve Long, Pastor John Arnott and their

To a degree....... I can both identify with....... and somewhat understand why P. M. Trudeau would make that statement because
my all time record for getting myself ex-communicated from Christian churches...... is two....... in roughly one month?!

Ms. Leitch.... for about two years now I have been asking myself it the 15X factor
might well carry through IF a thirty centimeter (one foot) rise in ocean levels were to occur.

I live about five kms from tidal waters. The difference between low tide to high tide in
Port Hillford is not much more than one meter on most days.

There are 143,000 acres of highly productive farmland along the Bay of Fundy that is
protected by dikes. Along parts of the Fundy the difference between low tide to
high tide can be FIFTEEN TO SEVENTEEN METERS!

So.... would a thirty centimeter rise in average ocean levels result in
30 cms x 15 = 450 cms or 4.5 meters along parts of the Bay of Fundy?

Are those 143,000 acres protected by dikes along the Fundy in the position of
the proverbial canary in a coal mine as far as rising ocean levels is concerned?

Is Bjorn Lomborn Ph. D. correct that a carbon tax would do little to address the
threat of rising ocean levels for a century or more?

Dennis Tate of West Indian Harbour Lake is vying for the District 1 seat in the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s.

In a press release announcing his candidacy, he said one of the “major reasons” he is running is to find five or more volunteers “willing to give their time” to attempt to set up a, sort of, St. Mary’s District Volunteerism Hour or Dollar, similar to Tamworth Hours or Calgary Dollars. Great Depression, Irving Fischer visited Worgl, Austria, a town that had initiated a local currency as an experiment.

Before that, he added, the town had “mass unemployment,” while most local factories were closed.

“In only six weeks, unemployment in Worgl virtually disappeared,” Tate noted.

He believes Sherbrooke has “the talented and skilled people”
required to organize a successful modern application of the Worgl experiment.

Tate has sought public office before, including as MLA, running as an independent in Pictou Centre, to help get his message out.

“I was given an article on monetary policy back in 1994 that changed the way I looked at what I had read about economics,” he said, noting he studied business at St. F.X. for “a couple years.”
He noted “my primary goal
has never been to win.”
“It was more so to inform,”
Tate said of his candidacies. “Interestingly enough, my
goal was to find five or 10,15 or 20 people, who would be willing to discuss an option like local currencies further, and I am finding them,” Tate said.

He added he is “extremely
happy” with that progress.

“Because I will listen to
them,” Tate said, when asked why people should vote for him.

Tate added he will “consider ideas that are outside the box.”

“I will take risks and I will try to find something that can work in our area,” he said.

It really is exciting!

I am heading out now to visit the Municipal Building for the counting of the ballots for today......
I do expect to lose this campaign...... because my opponent has been doing the job for
these past four years and my wife told me that she really did do a good job on the
Old Fashioned Christmas event that is put on by Sherbrooke Historic Village.

But I might get a surprise and I might just win this..... and if I do.... then I will know that
Mr. Corey LeBlanc's article must have played a huge role in turning the scales in my
favor.

My radiator died on me while I was campaigning or I might well have been able to knock on
ninety percent of the doors in my area... but due to car trouble I am pretty sure that I only
got to about half of them...... which is a serious error on a municipal election campaign.

Well..... I only got ten votes and my opponent incumbent Ms. Findlay got 111......
but I am still glad that I ran.

My opponent really got out there and I am pretty sure that she was able to knock on
ninety percent or more of doors and met with somebody from the majority of
homes........ but I failed to do that...... and I don't blame anybody for taking that
as something of an insult.

But I got an absolutely fascinating reply from a computer programmer who lives here
and within two months I am hoping to have an update .... plus apology.... plus
link to a website and database......for
everybody in this area that could turn out to be a major consolation prize for many residents of my area.

Wgabrie..... I met somebody during this campaign who makes me look like a total
rank amateur when it comes to the subject of local and alternative currencies!

Although I have been studying this topic for 22 years I met a young man who
knows far far far more than I do about the potential for local or alternative currencies to create
jobs, even in an economically depressed area where a high percentage of families
have already been forced to leave our area to find long term employment.

Individual communities, however, are able to create their own currencies -- including paper notes. Anyone can do it -- as long as the money is easily distinguishable from U.S. dollars and values are tied to the U.S. dollar so that income remains taxable.

Fear factor: Francis Ayley, the founder of Life Dollars, a currency started in Bellingham, Wash., in 2004, said fear of a shortage of U.S. dollars and frustration with the growing wealth gap in the country are driving more people to his currency. Since a majority of the transactions occur online and funds are directly transferred between members, the supply of Life Dollars is unlimited, he said.

I would love for you to seriously consider printing up a Barack Obama Volunteerism Hour note?

My suggestion would be to make the first printing a one hundred hour note, (it will probably cost you less than five cents for each bill to have them printed because it costs about one cent to print up a USA one dollar note, as well as one cent to print up a USA one hundred dollar note).

Near death experiencer Dannion Brinkley was shown that he was going to be used to initiate Spiritualistic Capitalism and I believe that he has certainly laid the foundation for that movement to come on the world scene in a big way now.

President Obama, Richard Dawkins Ph. D. is not being entirely truthful when he terms himself an Atheist. Some of his online interviews reveal that he is obviously an Agnostic. Dogmatic Atheistic teachings have forced Americans, Canadians and the people of all nations to place an exceptionally low value on their own lives, on their time, on their real estate and their assets, talents and capabilities.

You Sir, are certainly in a position to inspire people to alter how they view the intrinsic value of their lives and potential.

Today Patty Hadju, Trudeau's Minister of Status of Women, criticized my proposal to legalize the use of mace and pepper spray for self-defence calling it a "misguided approach".
She's quoted in iPolitics as follows, "we are developing a federal gender-based violence strategy in consultation with provinces, territories and grassroots organizations to ensure that women in Canada can live free from violence. We will continue to make sure that gender equality is at the core of all government decisions we ma‎ke.”
Does she think that if a woman is set upon by a violent predator she should just shout "federal gender-based violence strategy!"? I think that women should at least have a fighting chance with non-lethal tools to subdue and incapacitate an attacker.

There are three primary threats to the quality of life for all of us who live here. High unemployment will probably force most of our young people to move far away to find jobs. Two effective methods to combat global warming and simultaneously fight rising ocean levels have been proposed by New Mexico biologist Carl Cantrell.

"The truth is that you can do more to decrease global warming by just reducing the average temperature for the Sahara Desert by one or two degrees than if we humans completely quit using fossil fuels and returned to the cave."

"So, how would you start working to resolve this problem? Easy, cool the deserts and get some vegetation growing on them as soon as possible. But the method is much more complex than that. You have to use the prevailing trade winds in relation to the deserts to get the best results as quickly as possible and it will be extremely expensive."

Another promising method to green the deserts is to use hydrogen fuel cell technology to power vehicles in the hottest and driest regions of the earth. Imagine millions of vehicles across the Sahara, the Middle East, near the US Mojave desert and in the outback of Australia all spewing harmless water vapor as exhaust! Rest assured humidity and rainfall will increase in those areas and vegetation will grow.

Last week I wrote a lengthy e-mail to Green Party Leader Elizabeth May. "Ms. May, if you owned a large apartment building and your tenants complained that the rooms were too warm would you listen to the advice of the contractor who was telling you to rip all the insulation out of the walls of this structure?"

"I don't think that you would because your article indicates that you have a phenomenal intellect and listening to this probably self-interested contractor would be incredibly unwise!"

"Combating global warming by first getting rid of CO2 is comparable to tearing the insulation out of this hypothetical building. CO2 is not a pollutant. Ms. May deserves credit for encouraging Canadian political leaders to take environmental issues more seriously but at this time I feel that she has far too much confidence in the proposals put forward at Kyoto. The skepticism that Prime Minister Harper had for this accord seems to have been based on sound reasoning. Liberal Leader Stephane Dion was wise to hope for more time to further study this complex subject before an election.

Today, Conservative Party of Canada Leadership Candidate Hon. Deepak Obhrai announced a proposal to raise Old Age Security Pensions (OAS) for low-income seniors at the same rates as increases to salaries for Members of Parliament.
It is terrible that these days, many seniors are unable to meet their basic needs. And the current increases to OAS do not actually help them meet their needs. As such, I propose that these increases to OAS be equal to the increases that Members of Parliament get in their salaries. Our seniors deserve the same kind of treatment. Mr. Obhrai said.
The announcement was first made during the second leadership debate that took place on December 6th, 2016 in Moncton, New Brunswick. The proposal is based off recent salary increases of MPs in the past few years after a wage freeze was implemented by the House of Commons Board of Internal Economy (BOIE) between 2010 and 2012 in the wake of the economic crisis. Between 2013 and 2016, MP salaries were raised by an average of 2% per year, whereas OAS was increase by an average of 1.5%. Currently, OAS is revised quarterly according to the Consumer Price Index.
