This preoccupation with 'what will the rest of the world think?'... where does it come from? Seems better to me that we just be America and let everyone else decide whether they want to be our friend or not, rather than trying to cater to the whimsy of a hundred different conflicting cultures and become an amalgam of everyone but ourselves. Do we want a small circle of close friends who stick together due to shared fundamental values, or a vast clique of shallow aquaintences who only tolerate eachother to maintain 'the herd'? I say F em'. This is our country. They have their own. If they wanna be friends- great. If they don't like who we are, thats they're problem. We'll figure something else out, and they'll wish they were in on it.
The problem is, who are we? Are we the country that voted Obama in twice by large margins or the country of Trump, who had to rely on an electoral college vote? Are we the country that signed treaties a year ago or the one that’s breaking them this year? Makes it tough for the rest of the world to make decisions on how to interact when the power structure can change every two years. As for ignoring the opinions of the rest of the world? The Soviet Union, North Korea, Cuba tried that for decades ... how did that work out for them?
I think we're better off keeping the rest of the world guessing. they don't have our best interest in mind, they have their best interest in mind. This is a competition, and we should be looking to ours before theirs just as they do. Those countries all have something else far more in common than general non-cooperation with global affairs. Consider Switzerland. Its not very active on the global scene either, and its one of the most prosperous nations in the world. I don't get the impression that Switzerland is very concerned with the opinion of the global community...
