The reality is that the Tories only won 304,000 votes from Labour who lost 2.6 million. The votes that went to the Tories will in the main have come from the usual suspects who tend to be over 55 and living in small towns. It is very likely that none of them are recent Labour voters though it could be true that this is for some their first Tory vote - home at last!

The Tories won because the opposition - everyone else including liberal Tories did not find this worth fighting together. Labour did apparently make a mess of some things in particular Brexit which was all that happened in the election but the people who Labour lost the most votes to were the LibDems, the Greens and the SNP while very little to the Tories.

It is the amazing propaganda that is going on though both with Johnson and the media. I even watched a newscaster finding an ex Labour tory voter in a small town and asking him if it had been very difficult - had he thought of his dead parents and realised that he just could not vote for Labour, was it like that? This one went 'err' and then 'sort of' or something. Not too difficult to get most people to say what you want their first time on tv.

It's not surprising. The same thing happened in the US.

They still have the votes of the very poor, but not the working class or lower middle class.
You can't buy the working class with handouts of free things. It's impossible to hand out enough free things to compensate them for their loss of lifestyle.

Here is an analysis of the people whose vote they get and how things have changed

    https://www.paulmason.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/After-Corbynism-v1.2.pdf
Contrary to what you said they are most highly supported in the
"professional and technical" and"skilled trades and administrators".

The have lost most support from older manual workers living outside cities.

    From the article posted above:
Bernie is a tried and true Social Democrat. Perhaps the only candidate presently who knows the difference between a Social Democrat and a Socialist. Elizabeth is a multi-millionaire who made her fortune almost all by herself. She knows the meaning of the word Capitalism. (Most Americans don't know her background. So, here*.)

Bernie has learned all his Social Democrat theory by befriending people in Europe. He's very well informed about its virtues. And let's not forget the factual evidence from the last election that got Donald Dork elected. HE LOST THE POPULAR-VOTE FOR THE PRESIDENCY. Rather, he got it by means of the Electoral College that manipulates the popular-vote with its idiotic "Winner takes all" rule of the Electoral College. (And if you don't know what that means, see here.))

    Blah-blah-blah.

Bernie will not get elected because the Dems have not the "balls" to either understand or want to employ his kind of economic thinking. The thought process is too profound for both American politicians and voter-reflection.

Frankly, I don't really know how they did it, but both Bernie and Elizabeth are beating the same economic-drum ...

The popular vote has no legal relevance whatsoever in the US, UK, or indeed the vast majority of democratic nations that now exist or ever have.

I think he is a little bit hopeful but not far off the mark with the problem.

Good old George. With a patronising numb nut like him telling the public how it should vote the Conservatives will be in power forever.

Could Monbiot be a Tory party plant?

So, acting like an episode of the Jerry Springer show, where the loudest, most obnoxious, most smart assed in your face argument wins the day, is not how to win an election?

Maybe acting like little brats works with their mommies, or gets them likes on FB, but it doesn't endear them to anyone else.

Well, yes. But keep it under your hat. The remainers and Corbynistas in the UK have yet to learn that lesson and until they do Boris and the Tories will be safe.

yeah...but still.... if'n the Labour lot had gone and ditched Corbyn and sent him back to his allotment a couple of years ago and perchance agreed the Brexit vote should actually be honoured (as their loyal supporters had actually voted for) - then maybe they would be the ones with 365 MPs and not the Tories. Its all in the message....at least that's what my cognitive dissonance tells me....

PS... hope you had a lovely Christmas...:)

Christmas was alright. Hope yours was good. I will put in a couple of videos from a left wing perspective in another post. Corbyn was the one they would not let happen, not just because he would not have gone with US foreign policy and worse than that would have been outspoken about it including and very much Israel which Trump is ignoring international law on and claiming all the land Israel wants belongs to Israel now....but it wasn't just Israel though granted that one was the one which they gave the most attention to and which he paid the price for not fighting. That was one. The other thing which he would never be forgiven for is that he would have offered the UK the opportunity of Social democracy. He would have allowed the economy to serve all the people not just the few. Apparently every single thing was costed but as I have heard a lot of people say if he had given even half that would have been amazing but everything was apparently scrupulously costed. This possibly contradicts what Neo Liberalism pretends is the truth. Want a Capitalist society - pay the people a good wage then they will have sufficient money to buy your products. It was Thatcher who brought in this idea that you run an economy like a women runs the weeks housekeeping budget. It does not work. Austerity creates more austerity. Our debt/deficit keeps going up not down. Boris is currently playing games to try a hoodwick the wc who voted for him. Did you see the look he got from the Mogg when he called it a 'People's Government'. England is heading for fascism. They cannot give you what they need so they will control you. Yes, possibly if they had got rid of Corbyn and got in someone else who in particular had a different foreign policy then possibly the press would not have minded so much and might even have decided they did not mind a left Government. The ex head of the B of E, Carney has today warned people they have to have a very good reason for buying fossil fuels and it may be worthless very soon. Same for Australia and coal. Now from what I hear Boris is with Trump with environment and that quite simply could be the difference between whether this planet survives or not. Carney's got a job working to save the planet. He knows that the current capitalist way cannot survive at the same time as the planet....actually I do hope he is going to spice things up. I would be in favour of massive sanctions against rich countries not doing their share. Corbyn was of course going to do the best he could to get us to net zero by 2030. I don 't think in any way he is any kind of great leader which almost certainly is why he never tried to be and him being so wrong about how to deal with the antisemetic racket if that was his choice obviously shows he can make poor choices. (In case you do not know statistics show that antisemitism has gone down in the Labour Party since Corbyn became leader and is small anyway and lowest among left wing people.) That was just a total smear. That should give you some idea about what we are dealing with from our news and state.

Anyway had he become Leader and started acting as he wanted warts and all - now whether he would or not of course even if elected because the US, Pompeo I think it was, had promised that if Corbyn somehow escaped the gauntlet, (he used a term like that) the US would make sure that he never was PM. Consider that if you believe we have sovereign states never mind democracy.

Labour winning would have allowed the opportunity for the west to have another possibility than the hard right. They are apparently already getting started with some of the same **** on Sanders who is in any case a Jew - but he will become 'not a real Jew'.

The hard right authoritarian West run by Trump were the winners of the 2019 election.

The reason I am not putting in the videos now is because I have only watched ten mins of one and want to watch them first. However I can tell you that in them they are dissing Owen Jones and Paul Mason. I like Paul Mason though I don't know him that well as I did not know that previously he had been trying to get Corbyn removed, if that is true. I do know however that in an article he wrote after the election he was going to do much what the say on the video - give up the things which the hard right and I guess centrist could not stand. In particular I remember him saying things about foreign policy. Having the same foreign policy as the hard right and their centrist hangers on will not get us where we need to be. Whether they are going to stick and to how much and within what mind to the ideas of Corbyn etc or just go like Blair did - looking for power whatever they need to do to get it is what we need to wait and see, I seem to remember in that article Mason was willing to give up a lot but was very strong on one thing - but we will not accept racism - he has had it if the rest of what he said about racism, particularly in areas with hardly any Muslims or non whites is true.

So England now must stew in the juice of its own making while I can always console myself that we will just rebuild Hadrian's wall and leave you to it!!!!!

P.S. On Corbyn going along with the demands of the right of the Party re another referendum you are right and that seems to have had a massive effect on people's votes...but that was not him. He fought that for as long as he could. Of course it would have helped if the right of the Party had not been telling voters to vote Tory.

It could happen. Rebecca Long Bailey is expected to throw her hat in the ring and she has started on about something she calls progressive patriotism, so the brothers and sisters might be in with a chance. The trouble is that a lot of don't realise just how much they have pissed off the electorate, so they will continue to blame media and insist that all they need do is shout even louder next time.

    Labour lost...
I know! It was funny, I watched.
    Best exit poll I've seen.
Working majority, delivering Brexit; Jeremy Corbyn gave Tories an early Christmas present, just had to acknowledge that, thank you.
I don't care who leads Labour, all the front runners to replace Corbyn look un electable quite frankly, good luck with that one Labour!
Boris Johnson could be the Prime Minister for the next 15 years.
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politic...15-years-telegraph-readers-weeks-top-stories/

Wait, what, why aren't there more or any threads dedicated to the best election in living memory / election that changed the course of history and struck perhaps a fatal blow for Corbynism but a fatal blow for Labour regardless.
So toxic, just handed us the election there didn't you :), and right before Christmas too, it was amazing!
And he works so quick with a working majority wasting no time messing around trying to convince the DUP, and now Brexit's happening less than 2 months of Boris Johnson being elected Prime Minister.

I mean, I remember when he was mayor, he's just a big bombastic glory hog, but he's heading Brexit. lol!

I dare say that Alexa will be along soon enough to declared that the whole business was a humiliating defeat for the Tories and a glorious vitrification of the SNP's role in the leadership of the EU.

    Or some such.

But until then we will have to settle for raising a glass or two next Friday.

@alexa If the situation is similar to France, then it's not because they distrust the left they adopted the right.

The FN managed to get a part of the vote of the left, but let's be honest : most people now don't vote anymore because they lost faith in politician altogether and even among the people who vote for Marine Le Pen, few of them actually believe in her lies.

I am not so sure that the UK has "lost the working class". We are changing (yet again) "Ages" - that is like the Agricultural Age gave way to the Industrial Age, this latter has given way (in Europe and the US) to the Information Age. These changes will be deep and challenging - many, many who are not reeducated will fall off.

What the Left represents is a fair share of the wealth that is generated - after all their work help create it and their buying was key to its existence. What the Left can do is try to realize that BigIndustry is no longer the job-creator it once was. What is needed is smarts, and those should be attained by all who try at acceptable tuition-costs. (Not that of $14K a year as in the US, or the UK that is likely less expensive annually, but still too expensive for some.)

All I am asking for the US is a fair share of the Wealth generated, and if the US is the worst example to date of failing that task, then the EU is one of the best examples in trying-hard-to-achieve it.

The US simply shows how much Income Disparity is rampant, and the great indifference to that fact by far too many Americans.

But, what can you do? Dumb does and dumb is - anyone who votes for a Donald Dork (or his like) deserves the consequences ...

I kept telling this forum, making post after post about how toxic Corbyn is.
    He's a left wing Pinko who hates Jews;
You could and probably should compare him to Adolf Hitler since they both favoured state control and seizing of the private sector as well as hating Jewish people.
That's why Jeremy Corbyn handed Boris Johnson the election; because this is the UK, and we don't buy into his type of politics here.
