I bring up mandatory voting every so often just to hear the collective asthma attacks from our American colleagues :p

Honestly I think it would turn thier political system upside down. It is would be an interesting social experiment to see if they became, like us, a country of swinging voters

As is his right. Doing so ALSO ensures no one can “steal” his vote by using his name

We have some voter fraud but it is not huge

Nah! We are free not to vote and the government is free to fine us for not voting ;) if we did not have mandatory voting no bastard would turn up!

    It has another side effect

Our voter cards are much much shorter than the usa

And even with the current system we have polished turds like Cormann ripping us off, and nothing is done..it wasnt that long ago that Bronwyn Bishop did the same thing, plus our illustrious sports minister
Susan Ley recently did the same and they expect us to vote for them.........but I digress.....

Not all countries have the same laws or the same rights guaranteed under their Constitution.

You don't have to vote if you're mentally infirm.

I failed to vote in the State election, anyway received my "you failed to vote" in the mail today. Let me tell you what is the worst thing about mandatory voting. It's having to read through all the crap they manage to stuff in the ****ing envelope.

I got no frickin clue, thus the hyphens. But that's the claim by the left here in the US- that we want voter ID laws to suppress minorities.

It violates the right to vote in the same way oppression of Atheism violates the freedom of religion.

Refusing to vote in protest is absolutely included in the right to vote, and ought to be protected political speech.

I understand and respect the views of those who think it should be illegal to refrain from voting, and there are certainly social advantages, but I respectfully disagree that the social advantages outweigh the cost to the individual.

A mate of mine takes a solid 20 minutes to sketch a realistic penis cumming all over caricatures of both parties' leaders.

I'd love to see their faces when they try to count that one.

This is discrimination against non-religious people.

They are just parroting somebody else, as many of these so called experts really do believe it to be so and try to explain that sitting members generally get better representative results over unknown. It is clearly devoid of understanding of how the electoral process works. We have few members who parrot text books and so on to pretend they are informed yet they clearly don’t comprehend the context.

As statistically, the comment is true, but the credibility is lost over the fact the overall result is opposing…

Umm, YOU stated it was racist (parenthesis included), now questioned you point the finger at somebody else's stupidity...

??? Logic??? Honestly??? I think it speaks more to the value of the comment (not yours).

It was a sarcastic quip meant to demonstrate the lunacy of their position. Voter ID law supporters (typically on the right, in the US) are often labeled as racists (typically by the left) based on the left's belief that minorities will have difficulty voting if they have to show ID to do so. Im glad we can agree that theres no sense to this notion.

I realize sarcasm doesnt translate well over text, but sometimes I just can't help myself. I apologize for the confusion. I do not believe voter ID laws are racist.

The constitution doesn't give the government the right to force people to vote so doing this is unconstitutional. Many people don't vote because they don't care about politics or don't really have anyone they support. Do you really want these people making big decisions for this country? I'd actually make it really hard to vote. You have to go through a ton of paperwork and arbitrary nonsense to vote. Only those who really want to vote will vote, and these people are likely to be people very interested and informed on politics.

Umm this is Australian thread about Australian electoral process. Since ID policy in Australia is different and electoral process is different, doesn’t that suggest the sarcasm is, for lack of better, stupid??? That is why sarcasm is considered the lowest form of wit...
