Originally billed as a protest in favour of free speech — alongside the disdain over the removal of Confederate statues in the city — the “alt-right” rally found itself transformed into a torch-wielding, Nazi-flag waving dereliction of American values — at least considering the publicity afforded to the event, and the behaviour of some of the rally’s attendees.

In brief, what transpired amounted to a disgusting and unwelcome throwback to segregationist ideas and rhetoric at a time when patriotic conservatism is gaining ground. While many media minutes and deliberations will be afforded to the fascistic right, almost none will be dedicated to the fascistic left.

Gun control supporter Governor Terry McAuliffe was whisked into a downtown building under massively armed police protection in the middle of the afternoon, via a small alleyway off Main Street. One female witness to the scene shouted, “Thank you for showing up!”

McAuliffe flipped back and forth between urging for calm and unity, and demanding division while insisting pro-Confederate statue protesters were persona non grata in his Commonwealth.

He lauded presidents Jefferson and Washington, but ran entirely contrary to their commitments to free speech by declaring of protesters: “There is no place for you in America”.

Insisting “we were here to bring people together and unify folks”, he added “We are a nation of immigrants… unless you’re native American”.

“Please go home and never come back,” he said to Unite the Right protesters, adding: “Take your hatred and take your bigotry”.

Instead of a call for dialogue, or even trying to explain what would be a totally reasonable and easily-made argument against flying Nazi flags or torch-lit demonstrations, he chose to further drive a wedge, as did those who flanked him on stage.

“They’re going to be in the trash heap of history,” said the Charlottesville mayor, while police chief Al Thomas defended the police strategy on the day. Despite having had weeks of notice, as well granting a protest permit to alt-right protesters, there were three fatalities and many injured. In an oddly nativist tone, he declared “outsiders do not tell our story”.

The media tone is also evidently one-sided. While no one — including this website — would take up the cause of defending the actions of the alt right or Nazi flag wavers, it is important to note how quickly many have chosen to lump the blame at the doorstep of President Donald Trump.

I asked Gov. McAuliffe four times tonight to condemn in equal measure the violence of antiFa. I didn’t want him to rescind criticism of the alt right. I didn’t expect him to be nuanced. But I did think — perhaps foolishly — that he might want to distance himself from violent tactics on both sides. I supposed wrong.

Trump got it right by condemning all hate groups. The leftist VA Gov. McAuliffe didn't.

MSM was also quick to condemn Trump CNN: “President Trump fails to condemn the alt-right and white supremacists in his statement about violence in Charlottesville, Virginia”.

"The media tone is also evidently one-sided. While no one — including this website — would take up the cause of defending the actions of the alt right or Nazi flag wavers, it is important to note how quickly many have chosen to lump the blame at the doorstep of President Donald Trump."

It is not Trump that is causing the country to be divided it is hate groups like Antifa and the much smaller KKK and MSM that keep fueling the fire.

Condemning one side while not condemning the other sort of implies support for the side you're not condemning, and both sides are equally wrong and deserving of condemnation.

He would never condemn violent leftists.

There's a better chance of a Martian spaceship landing on the White House lawn today than having a leftist public official criticize other leftists.

He's a political hack with plenty of skeletons in the closet. He was quick to further HIS leftist agenda over the weekend. Trump was doing his job too (while working on vacation) he had time to sign an important VA bill to allow more Vets to get private treatment. Trump did also find time to denounce ALL hate groups including the KKK that leftists propagandists say supported him but who he has repeatedly denounced.

As Gov. Of Virginia, it was McAuliffe's job to break up the riots on BOTH sides before they got out of hand. Had he denounced all hate groups there, it probably would not have escalated into a riot.

Trump was right. There was hate and wrong on many sides. That includes the White Nationalists and Antifa groups. The media is clearly one-sided on this.

It was only a matter of time before someone overreacted the left's constant trampling of their Constitutional rights. Sad it came to violence, but then again, those lefties were only there to rile things up. Hard to have sympathy for people who get burned playing with fire...

Well said. The way the President addressed the incident was as fair as it could be. He didn't have all the facts as they were still developing. The Governor of any state is directly responsible for any domestic problems in his state. I thought McAuliffe handled the situation poorly and in a left biased partisan way. Same for CNN and their band of haters trying to place blame on Trump.

That's the part the left isn't understanding.

I cannot believe how the media gives Antifa a free pass for their hatred and hypocrisy. This is a group that supports North Korea - North Korea! - of all places. North Korea is the most fascist, oppressive government on the face of the planet Earth.

Making comparison to Hitler and Nazis is overdone..... but in the case of North Korea, the comparison is apt. They are truly a modern day Nazi Germany, replete with concentration camps, slave labor, and mass oppression unlike anything seen anywhere else in the world. So naturally, Antifa supports them.

I bet that if Trump called out BLM and Antifa, the media would lose their minds.
