    I found this on RT. I confess to not being up to speed on the whole issue. Apparently, at least from the article, the US is using bully tactics to push Monsanto onto the world.

    Also, the toxicity of glyphosphates is brought up.

    Interesting.

    ~~~~~~~~~~
    LINK: http://rt.com/usa/165128-us-pressures-salvador-monsanto-gmo/
    As one of the preconditions to authorizing close to $300 million in aid, the United States is pressuring El Salvador to purchase genetically modified seeds from Monsanto instead of non-GM seeds from local farmers.
    According to Sustainable Pulse, a website covering developments related to genetically modified organisms and sustainable agriculture, the US will reportedly withhold $277 million in aid through the Millennium Challenge Compact if El Salvador refuses to purchase GM seeds from the biotech company Monsanto.
    The website states that the stalled aid package was originally put on hold in late 2013, when it was revealed that Millennium Challenge Corporation would not deliver funds to the country unless “specific” economic and environmental reforms were made. Apparently, one of those is related to the purchase of GMO seeds.
    Speaking with Verdad Digital, however, the president of the El Salvadoran Center for Appropriate Technologies (CESTA) criticized the US negotiating position and said the country should back away from its demand.
    “I would like to tell the U.S. Ambassador to stop pressuring the Government (of El Salvador) to buy ‘improved’ GM seeds,” CESTA president Ricardo Navarro said, adding that the move would hurt the local economy and only benefit US companies.
    Navarro specifically singled out Monsanto for criticism as well, saying, “There is a harmful corporation on the planet called Monsanto … it is truly disturbing that the U.S. is trying to promote them.”
    In Europe, too, Monsanto’s GM seeds have garnered criticism. In March, France banned the growth and sale of the company’s insect-repelling maize seed MON 810, just a few days before it was revealed that insects in the US were developing resistance to the crop.
    The comments from Navarro also arrive as Monsanto is under fire in several South American countries, including El Salvador and Brazil. As RT reported previously, El Salvador passed legislation in September 2013 banning glyphosate, used in Monsanto’s Roundup pesticides, as well as dozens of other agricultural chemicals.
    Similar proposals are being considered in Brazil, where the country’s prosecutor general recently urged the National Health Surveillance Agency to “reevaluate the toxicity of eight active ingredients suspected of causing damage to human health and the environment,” including glyphosate and seven other chemicals.
    As for why glyphosate is coming under such heavy scrutiny, new research has indicated that while the chemical is not as dangerous on its own, it becomes extremely toxic to humans once it mixes with natural metals found in soil.
    Meanwhile, other reports have linked glyphosate to the outburst of a fatal kidney disease that has killed thousands of people in El Salvador and Sri Lanka, and could also help explain similar situations in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and India.
    Thanks for the sources I requested. I will go look for the USDA study because a source that uses a "We don't know the effects" next to an author's declaration that it is highly toxic have some credibility issues with me.
    Nope. There is no gentic "science" taking place.Science is by necessity independent and reviewable. Anything besides this cannot be considered "science" any more than drawing Tarot cards on the Jerry Springer show, and in many cases can be actively used to work directly against science by masquereding as legitimate when it is anything but, as is the proven track record including things like cigarrettes, leaded-paint, leaded-gasoline, asbestos, DDT etc., all of which had their vauge reassurances artbitrary from the government, rubber stamped willy-nilly by politicians with no qualifications whatsoever, proven to be in bed with the very corporations that want to peddle these products and so have an obviousd confict of interest and are paying them bribes to influence their will.
    This is the same reason why you don't let OJ Simpson be his own jury. If you don't see why, then this means you don't undrestand what science actually even is in the first place.
    I see, the 'because I say so' argument. There have been 0 deaths and 0 illness from GMO yet somehow, because you say so, it is dangerous.
    It's not based on my say so at all. As much as I would love to take the credit for inventing the scientific method, I did not.
    I never said GMO's were dangerous. I said corporate/government pseudo-science is dangerous, and I showed cases in history which prove it. I'm not the one making definitive claims one way or the other. You however just did, but you don't have any factual studies to prove your claim. You need peer reviewable scientific study for that, with all methodology and data available, so other scientists, who don't have the same obvious conflict of interest, can replicate the experiments for themselves. "Fact" sheets from the company that who wouldn't say say otherwise because they want to sell the products, and the politicians they bribe giving them a thumbs up, will not suffice.
    I already told you that the GMO products were the result of successful, replicable scientific experimentation. How else would Monsanto know if the process worked? Then, that data was reviewed by the USDA and found safe for consumption. There have been 0 illness or death from these products and a court found that the GMO patent was viable.
    If you don't trust the USDA then I suggest you not buy any food at all. Grow your own and don't try to scare others away from the grocery store.
    You still haven't provided any proof of your claims. Show me the actual stats and the peer reviewed studies than link GMO food with any illness or death in people. And please don't re-publish the useless experiments where human cells are bombarded with Round Up or some other nonsense and the claim it is deleterious to human beings. I want to see direct links to specific persons illness or death linked directly to consuming GMO corn...for instance.
    Yeah all the food producers are selling poison while they gleefully rub their hands and rake in the dough. Those nasty rich people...All they want to do is make money, they don't care about the average person.
    Can you see the complete insanity of that type of thinking?
    Of course, the average person is who PAYS them for their product. Apparently corporate executives have lost their minds and are willfully poisoning the very people that make them millionaires.
    They're willfully making as much profit as is possible, by any means necessary (even if they have to use lab creations to do it). But hey, I just want to know what I'm eating but, apparently that's too much to ask.
    Perhaps you would be wise to take your own advice, Do your Homework & Be Pleased to be informed:
    The term ‘Green Revolution has been expropriated by Corporations to suit their Profit motivated agenda
    The original Green Revolution is quite different from what should be termed the Monsanto Gene Revolution
    The development of new seed hybrids tailored to specific needs has proven beneficial
    The development of Patented Transgenic varieties tailored to suite Corporate Poisons
    …………..................................................….. such as RoundUp is quite different
    -------------------------
    Just a few Green Rev G:eyepopping::eyepopping:LES for your consideration
    Specifically: The use of Transgenic GMO Seed developed for use with RoundUp has shown time & time again
    a percipitous DROP in yield, the development of so called super weeds and the degradation and destruction of soil
    GM Crops Do NOT Increase Yield Potential
    "From the start, GM crops have performed no better than their non-GM counterparts. Evidence for the “yield drag”
    of Roundup Ready soybeans, for example, has been known for over a decade"
    Sowing Trouble: India’s Second Green Revolution
    http://www.scidev.net/global/biodiversity/opinion/sowing-trouble-indias-second-green-revolution.html
    Suman Sahai argues that India's new agricultural biotechnology deal with the United States
    will take power away from farmers and endanger a rich genetic heritage.
    When US president George W. Bush visited India in March, he announced the coming of a
    'Second Green Revolution'. This was a reference to India's 1970s Green Revolution, a publicly
    funded push to improve food production. But the comparison simply does not hold up.
    The two are radically different. The proposed 'revolution' is a joint US-India initiative aimed at
    promoting agricultural biotechnology and the interests of private corporations. It has been
    cleverly packaged under the name of an agro-economic phenomenon still held in esteem by
    India's political leadership.
    The first Green Revolution produced technologies that belonged to the people. Improved crop
    varieties were bred with public money to fulfil a public need — increasing food production —
    and create public goods to which everyone had access.
    There were no intellectual property rights or patents. If anyone 'owned' the Green Revolution, it
    was the farmer. They chose where to plant the seeds produced by public research institutions. So
    despite some faults such as increasing soil salinity and water logging, the Green Revolution
    addressed farmers' needs, and India's food production began to rise.
    By contrast, the Second Green Revolution initiative centres on privately owned technologies —
    genetically modified (GM) plants. Six multinationals — BASF Plant Science, Bayer
    CropScience, Dow, DuPont, Monsanto and Syngenta — control almost all research in this field,
    and their products and research methods are shackled in patents.
    The technology creates private goods that can only be accessed at significant cost: a bag of 'Bt'
    GM cotton seeds produced by the Monsanto-Mahyco joint venture, costs 1,850 rupees (US$41) in
    India, compared to US$6.60-8.80 for superior local varieties.
    The seeds belong to the company, which strictly controls their movement. 'Terminator' seeds,
    which produce sterile adult plants, would further reduce farmers to being even more helpless
    consumers — not partners, as they were during the Green Revolution. Back then, scientists bred
    high-yield varieties in research stations and worked with farmers to produce enough high quality
    seeds for widespread distribution.
    Over the past two decades, GM technology has failed to produce a crop variety with any direct
    impact on hunger and nutritional needs.
    The (first) Green Revolution in India, on the other hand,
    produced the country's first dwarf, high-yielding, wheat varieties within a few years. High-
    yielding rice followed, and India has been able to maintain a surplus stock of grain ever since.
    The Green Revolution was an open, transparent, collaborative effort. But the contours of this
    newer revolution — formally called the Indo-US Knowledge Initiative on Agricultural Research
    and Education — have been kept so secret that neither senior Indian politicians nor the scientific
    community know its details.
    Yet the initiative's board will set the agenda for collaborative farm research with Indian
    laboratories and agricultural universities. Two board members, Wal-Mart — the world's largest
    retailer — and Monsanto, have according to sources within the companies, indicated that they
    propose using their position to enter into retailing in agriculture and agricultural trade in India.
    Currently, farmers can sell their produce at special markets set up by the government but a retail
    giant such as Wal-Mart would be able to sell food for much lower prices, and so threaten the
    farmers' livelihoods.
    Gene Bank Break-In?
    What is known about the new Indo-US deal is that it will focus on developing agricultural
    biotechnology, accessing biological resources in Indian gene banks, and discussing India's
    intellectual property rights regime — all of which are of crucial interest to the United States.
    To develop the GM crops (and fish and livestock) that will dominate the collaborative research,
    the US bioscience corporations involved want access to the rich biodiversity in Indian gene
    banks, research stations and university collections.
    Such corporations know that high-quality local varieties are vital for the success of GM varieties.
    The failure of Mahyco-Monsanto's Bt cotton will have taught them this important lesson: the
    cotton varieties that the companies used to make Bt cotton were at best modest performers that
    failed to compete well with other varieties. The results were crop failure and severe losses to
    farmers.
    But many in India are uneasy about providing the United States with access to its genetic
    resources. Will, for example, the requirements of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD),
    which the United States has not ratified, be met?
    Unless the CBD terms are met, India cannot allow US corporations access to its genetic wealth.
    US failure to meet the CBD provisions would leave India in default of its own convention
    commitments and violate the provisions of its national law, the Biological Diversity Act.
    As for India's intellectual property regime, the new initiative's board has discussed rights to
    products that the planned research programmes will develop. Many fear that this means that
    India's Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Act — the only law in the world granting
    legal rights specifically to farmers — could come under threat from US pressure.
    Along with multinationals such as Monsanto, the United States has been lobbying for a change in
    India's intellectual property laws to introduce patents on seeds and genes, and dilute the
    provisions protecting farmers' rights.
    A combination of physical access to India's gene banks and a possible new intellectual property
    law that allows seed patents will in essence deliver India's genetic wealth into US hands. This
    would be a severe blow to India's food security and self-sufficiency.
    And this is not all. The US negotiators have asked for restrictions on imports of US farm products
    into India to be removed. This amounts to asking for the right to export GM crops and foods to
    India.
    India must avoid becoming the dumping ground for controversial products that have been
    rejected in many parts of the world because of questions about their safety and usefulness
    Introducing any new agricultural technology into an inequitable social system
    cannot eliminate hunger if the social questions of access to the technology’s
    & from the Gates of one who now owns
    a large portion of Monsanto & who is on record for advocating large reductions in Human Population
    One might be wise to question his commitment to feeding the useless hoards of the starving great unwashed
    The Bad Seeds in the Green Revolution:
    Gates, Monsanto, GMO & Monopolies Microsoft, Monsanto
    ..................................................and Intellectual Monopolies
    Here's a brilliant, must-read feature exposing some of the hidden agendas of the
    Green Revolution and the dark side of the Gates Foundation's work in Africa. In
    particular, it makes explicit the symmetry of Microsoft and Monsanto in their use
    of intellectual monopolies to make their users increasingly powerless:
    The preference for private sector contributions to agriculture
    shapes the Gates Foundation's funding priorities. In a number of
    grants, for instance, one corporation appears repeatedly—
    Monsanto. To some extent, this simply reflects Monsanto's
    domination of industrial agricultural research. There are, however,
    notable synergies between Gates and Monsanto: both are
    corporate titans that have made millions through technology, in
    particular through the aggressive defense of proprietary intellectual
    property. Both organizations are suffused by a culture of expertise,
    and there's some overlap between them. Robert Horsch, a former
    senior vice president at Monsanto, is, for instance, now interim
    director of Gates's agricultural development program and head of
    the science and technology team. Travis English and Paige Miller,
    researchers with the Seattle-based Community Alliance for Global
    Justice, have uncovered some striking trends in Gates Foundation
    funding. By following the money, English told us that "AGRA used
    funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to write twenty-
    three grants for projects in Kenya. Twelve of those recipients are
    involved in research in genetically modified agriculture,
    development or advocacy. About 79 percent of funding in Kenya
    involves biotech in one way or another." And, English says, "so far,
    we have found over $100 million in grants to organizations
    connected to Monsanto."
    This isn't surprising in light of the fact that Monsanto and Gates
    both embrace a model of agriculture that sees farmers suffering a
    deficit of knowledge--in which seeds, like little tiny beads of
    software, can be programmed to transmit that knowledge for
    commercial purposes. This assumes that Green Revolution
    technologies--including those that substitute for farmers'
    knowledge--are not only desirable but neutral. Knowledge is never
    neutral, however: it inevitably carries and influences relations of
    power.
    I fear that with hindsight we will see that contrary to the almost universal view
    that Gates is redeeming his bad boy years at Microsoft with the good boy
    promises of his Foundation, Gates will actually do even more damage in the
    realm of agriculture than he has in the world of computing.
    Why do you wait ?– You & I know that No amount of Evidence or Peer Reviewed
    Science will convince you that Glyphosate might be dangerous – We have fenced on
    these threads for well over a year now. & you have been presented again & again with
    the FACTS regarding this Malignant Corporation
    You simply obstinately deny that those FACTs exist or have any validity. It seems
    likely to me that your job &/or present degree of comfort is intimately involved in
    the True Believer.
    Such Irrationality may give you comfort in the short term In the long term it will prove
    Dramatic Increase in Kidney Disease in the US and Abroad
    Linked To Roundup (Glyphosate) 'Weedkiller'
    http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/dr...sease-us-and-abroad-linked-roundup-glyphosate
    from the article:
    "This information, while shocking to many who still consider glyphosate herbicide and the
    GM food produced with it to be relatively non-toxic, is not surprising to those who have
    been tracking the published research on glyphosate's wide ranging harmful effects, and
    which now shows a link between glyphosate and several dozen health conditions. You
    Celiac Sprue and Gluten Intolerance
    http://www.motherearthnews.com/real-food/~/media/2C6428C5A5254BAFB484C6E43E4ADCF9.ashx
    from the article:
    Celiac disease, and, more generally, gluten intolerance, is a growing problem worldwide,
    but especially in North America and Europe, where an estimated 5% of the population
    now suffers from it. Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes, macrocytic anemia
    and depression. It is a multifactorial disease associated with numerous nutritional
    deficiencies as well as reproductive issues and increased risk to thyroid disease, kidney
    failure and cancer. Here, we propose that glyphosate, the active ingredient in the
    herbicide, Roundup®, is the most important causal factor in this epidemic.
    New review: The Multiple Health Impacts of Glyphosate
    http://www.gmfreecymru.org/pivotal_papers/crucial37.html
    from the article:
    "This is a long peer-reviewed article, accompanied by 286 references, which summarises
    the multiple negative health effects of glyphosate and Roundup, which are widely
    dispersed through the environment and the food chain, especially in the United States. It
    makes for sobering reading. It will no doubt be viciously attacked by Monsanto and its
    friends, but with this much evidence now piling up, NOBODY can claim that Roundup
    is benign, and that it is perfectly OK for it to be present in the food supply, even in
    miniscule quantities. When are our political leaders going to wake up to the fact that in
    pushing the GMO agenda, they are conniving to precipitate a public health disaster?
    Your links seem to take any increase in a particular illness and attribute that increase to glyphosates when that disease may also have other multiple causes. Humans have been eating glyphosates for at least 12 years and so far, no one has gotten ill or died from them.
