According to the Census Bureau, half of Americans can be considered lower income or poor and 93.7 million live in poverty.

Listened to a speaker a while back who wanted to know what it was like to be homeless. He left his wallet and money at home and had his wife drop him off on a street corner. He spent a month being homeless and wrote a book. He found out that there were several restaurants that would feed you for free. He found that you could get free clothes at several locations. He said there were homeless shelters but many avoided them because they did not allow drugs or alcohol. He said nearly everyone he met on the street had drugs or alcohol in their pockets. He said social workers tried to get you to sign up for government assistance programs. Those that did, got a government check once a month. When they got their checks they would cash them, get a hotel room, and spend it on hookers until the money ran out. Then it was back on the street where they begged until they got money for drugs or alcohol.

This was the majority of what he found among the homeless. This was their chosen lifestyle. There were others that were mentally challenged but most were addicts and alcoholics. The ones that are down and out or have had a situation that caused them to be homeless live in the homeless shelters. No one is forced to live on the street. That includes illegals.

UK is not as welcoming as you think but like yourselves we are paralysed when they get here so we just keep accumulating them with no real long term plan. A lot of people believe in Santa in the UK.

You can be fined £10,000 per illegal hired in the UK something the US should embrace.

A lot of California's homeless have full time jobs but their pay doesn't put them remotely close to ever buying property. Many live in their vehicles.

Pakistani's and Indians began pouring into England in the mid 1940's right after the WW2 end.

I don't disbelieve you, but I think things have changed since the recession. Maybe things are slowly recovering and going back to where they were before, I don't know.

Sometimes external economic circumstances can push people who may not be the most able-bodied or responsible, who would not otherwise have been homeless, into homelessness. If you ask the experts they'll tell you that homelessness is caused by a confluence of different factors coming together. It's rarely just one factor by itself. (High housing prices, diminishing job opportunity for less desirable groups of workers, individual disabilities, irresponsibility, alcohol/substance addiction, lack of family or strained family relationships, etc)

Poverty is a relative thing. The poverty level in the US is around $1,900 a month for a family of 4. In Russia over 70% of the population lives on half that or less.

Pakistan didn't exist till '47 and it wasn't till '48 with the commonwealth immigration act that the influx started. It was in the 50's that the real numbers came in.

This generation integrated well into UK society, our renewed problems with racism have come with the newcomers.

I think it proves how stupid people are.

Nothing can be done for the homeless who are mentally ill, because people just like you have tied our hands behind our backs. We cannot force them to take medication so that they may function normally in society, and we cannot institutionalize them.

When the mentally ill choose to take their medication, they won't be homeless.

Nothing can be done for the homeless who are substance abusers, because people just like you have tied our hands behind our backs. We cannot force them to into a rehabilitation program, except under rare circumstances, such as when they have committed a drug or alcohol related offense unrelated to possession or trafficking.

When the substance abusers choose to voluntarily participate in a rehabilitation program, they won't be homeless any longer.

Homeless veterans have the opportunity to take advantage of VA Domicilliaries, and each State has one, two, three, four or five such facilities. Ohio has four.

When a veteran chooses to take advantages of those services, they won't be homeless any longer.

For all others, if they are too damn dumb to relocate to an area with a lower Cost-of-Living, then double dumb ass on them.

In any event, it's not my problem.

Cake is good, but the economy is good enough for everyone to eat steak.

    Ain't capitalism yet?

What you are saying is true. In some instances a hardworking responsible person can have an event that causes them to become homeless. However, for people like this it will be temporary and the instances are rare. The majority of people are homeless due to choices. They chose to take drugs, they chose to abuse alcohol, they chose to drop out of school, they chose to commit crimes. They made choices that make them unemployable or close to it or they have just decided to quit the rat race and chose this life. In fact, the government and charities have people combing these homeless sites seeking out people who want help. Anyone wanting help can find numerous people willing to give it.
