I work for a Mom and Pop company and we do air conditioning and generator, install, service and repair. I was told (by the owner) and I don't doubt it, that all of the governments combined (federal, state, county and city) make more money than our company. We have 4 trucks rolling on the generator service side and 5 on the AC side. The taxes we pay are more than the profit we take in. Our government(s) are out of control.
Maybe that includes taxes withheld from employee wages. Do total taxes really exceed 50% of the company's end profits? I could definitely see this happening in California or New York. What state is the company in?
I know in Sweden about 1 out of every 2 members of the workforce population work for government in some capacity.
You statement is too non-specific to really mean anything. You'd need to clarify exactly which figures he was comparing. I could see to total value of every tax and fee a company pays being more than their net profit after all expenses are taken in to account but that in itself doesn't necessarily mean the taxes are too high or unfair (after all, a lot of small companies operate at a net loss, especially in their early days).
