I'm so depressed. My high school football coach and Civics teacher Coach Doug Norwood died last night of Pancreatic Cancer. I don't get it. He had only recently gone down to Dallas for his first rounds of chemotherapy. I sure if they thought his death was imminent that they wouldn't have started chemotherapy. Though I suppose they could've misjudged how far advanced it was or something might've gone wrong with the chemotherapy itself.

Yet another person on my prayer list has died. So yeah I'm very depressed and disillusioned.

    All for the moment.

Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer has a very high mortality rate. Mostly considered incurable.
They might have given the chemo to relive symptoms, without aiming for a cure.

Sad when your demographic starts to succumb to disease.

Today Amy and I have been married for 22 years. Hard to believe. Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s I worried that I could never have a girlfriend much less a wife. Still despite each of us having various health problems over the years and my seemingly endless problems keeping a good job overall our marriage has been good. I truly don't know what I would do without her. We're celebrating our anniversary by taking a day trip down to Shreveport tomorrow. Eat at a decent restaurant, do some shopping. Mainly just enjoy driving down there, getting out and feeling free and happy. We used to go down there often when we lived in Norphlet but given that Annalee lives in Sherwood we've tended to go to the Little Rock area when we do go somewhere.

Amy and I went to visit Annalee and stay overnight on Sunday night. We took her out to eat at a sports bar she chose to celebrate her 20th birthday. We bought the meal for her and her boyfriend. I had a burger which was pretty good. It was my second burger with tomato, onions, pickles, and cheese so perhaps I'm getting use to them.

Given we stayed overnight we had to take Murphy with us. Her and Bo got along okay I suppose though Sunday night was rough. Murphy tolerated Bo okay except when he wanted to bite at her even playfully. It was funny. Annalee has been training Bo. He promptly sits when she orders him to "SIT!" and she then gives him a treat for obeying. Murphy observed this and when Annalee told Bo to "SIT!" she sat down herself! It was amusing that she trained herself after simply observing Bo.

I'm depressed about one thing. Anthony Quinn, the husband of Cathy a classmate of my sister Donna's, died apparently of a heart attack a few days ago. He is being buried today at Dierks. I worked with Cathy at Walmart for nearly 9 years. Also Cathy is the sister of one of my long time classmates. Still depressing to have yet another person I know die.

    All for the moment.

Things have gone dramatically worse today with Camille's 5th chemotherapy treatment. She was far sicker in the aftermath of the treatment and I was told her platelet count dropped dramatically. Plus she spiked a fever this evening (apparently after she got home) so they're taking her back to the hospital.

Camille seems to be doing better. They found out that she might not have had a viral infection after all. That the chemotherapy itself might've caused her fever to spike. There is a chance she might be going home soon.. She has had problems with fluid retention and her liver enzymes being all over the place.

Amy, Murphy and I left last Friday to go stay with her parents on Friday and Saturday night. On Saturday we went up to my dads house to clean up. Amy's parents had been up there within the last couple of weeks and put something like 15 bags of trash out for the garbage truck to pick up. Amy and I managed to bag up an additional 8 bags plus the ancient rug from the living room. We threw out something like over 100 old videotapes. Lots of Star Trek and other science fiction episodes I had copied over the years. Most of them I have on DVD now anyway.

Overall the place is coming together. If our money holds out we might be able to complete the remodel in only four years though Amy had hoped for two.

Camille got to come home Tuesday. She did not have a chemotherapy treatment this week. From what we can see by the videos uploaded by her parents she seems to feel well and seems pretty happy

One of her chemotherapy chemicals she only receives every three weeks so missing the treatment this week was not that big a deal. I think it is a couple of more weeks until her next one of it.

Yesterday was one of the best Saturdays I've had in a long time. Annalee surprised us by coming down to see us Friday afternoon and she stayed the night on our couch. It was the first time Annalee had been to see us down here since she helped us move in August 2018. Unfortunately she had to bring her dog, Bo, which stressed us considerably. Murphy worst of all. Murphy, though she has always adored Annalee, wanted to stay out on the tether in the front yard rather than come back inside while Bo was here.

On Saturday Annalee took Amy to work at the library then came back to the house. She asked me to driver her around (in her vehicle) and show here the area. We drove around quite a bit. Especially to areas where we used to live and by the school where Annalee went from k-12. We even saw Annalee's 6th grade teacher walking at the old football field and talked to her awhile. We even drove out to the Norphlet Crater. I started to follow the path around it but about one third of the way there was a tree down across the path so I had to turn around. Annalee enjoyed it though.

And Saturday night I got a call from the Census Bureau. They decided to hire me for a total of 8 weeks to work on this years census. Sure it is only a short term thing for my employment problem but its still two months of good pay $21.00 an hour and 67 cents a mile compensation from however much I have to drive. They're supposed to email me about having my fingerprinting and background check done this week. Never thought I would feel so good about a two month job. At least it will be something I can add to the top line of my resume.

    All for the moment.

Got my email today about scheduling my fingerprinting for my background check today. And I was texted yesterday from a new school in central part of the state about an assistant football coaching and teaching job. I interview tomorrow.

For some reason I'm particularly hopeful.

Annalee took a job with the surgical unit at a Urology Clinic. She starts Monday.

Camille still seems in good spirits based on the video clips her parents are sending out. Oh yes, I've started eating lettuce with my burgers. Adding lettuce and counting asparagus takes me up to 9 different vegetables I now eat. Looks like I'm almost normal.

Thank God for all his blessings.

My interview last Wednesday seemed to go well. They asked me nothing about my background. Just ten questions they had taped to a table for everyone they interviewed to ask. Overall I though it was a good interview for me but then again, I've felt almost all my interviews were good ones. I thought they were going to decide on the four they were planning to hire by today (they were interviewing 14 to fill 4 positions) but I haven't heard anything yet. Don't know if the virus outbreak and the state closing the schools has made a difference in the timetable for that.

I went to Office Depot Thursday to be fingerprinted for my background check and photographed for my census employee id. I can't do anything else until my background check clears and I get the email regarding it. Again I wonder if the virus outbreak is making any difference in the timetable for that.

Annalee has started training for her new job as a surgery technician at the Urology clinic near where she lives. I hope she enjoys it. I don't know if they decided on another chemotherapy treatment for Camille today. As of yesterday they had not decided. I worried given this virus outbreak thing and her immune system being severely depressed. They've now restricted her to just one caregiver besides her parents. That is her grandmother Mandy (Amy's sister). Plus they are keeping her sister Elliot (5 year old) out of preschool to prevent her exposure to any diseases. Even if all goes well Amy and I probably won't see Camille again until late summer.

    All for the moment.

Still no word back on my background check so I can proceed with my census job though I've heard the census enumerators might be delayed in their work for a month or two.

I called last Friday the head football coach who interviewed me last Wednesday. I did not get the job. I was able to get him to talk about my shortcomings as a candidate for the job and he finally basically said I was too old. That they had some reservations about my ability to stand up to the grueling workload during the hot summer months. He said I was far and away the oldest of the 14 they interviewed for the 4 positions they had open.

That has really bummed me out as it is obvious that I can do nothing about my age.

Camille went in for her chemotherapy today. They had to take her back to the hospital briefly when she started running a fever but they quickly sent her home. Amy and I drove up to daddy's house to work on packing up trash and stuff and put it out for the garbage truck. Seems like that house will be an eternal work in progress.

I can't stand what this virus thing seems to be doing to the U.S. and its economy. I find the entire idea of "social distancing" ludicrous. I have no job. No friends. Only two family members within a two hour radius. And neither of the churches I've gone to here are having services. As I told Amy, "what people call social distancing I simply call life".

    All for the moment.

Camille was readmitted to the hospital after her fever spiked again. Given I get all my information from my wife regarding her I haven't hear anything since Friday. In explanation, Amy left on Friday to spend the weekend at Annalee's. I would like to have gone but if I went we would've have to have taken Murphy with us and the three of us plus two medium sized dogs (our Murphy, Annalee's Bo) in Annalee's one bedroom/one bath apartment is just too much for me. I'll see Annalee Easter weekend at Amy's parents anyway.

Still no word about when my Census job background check will clear though I did get an email telling me everything regarding the enumerators jobs have been delayed for an indeterminate time.

I didn't think we would have church this morning so at the suggestion of my middle sister Donna I made preparation to do the Lord's Supper here at home on my own. I never even realized that saltine crackers and unleavened were basically the same thing. I thought the resemblance was superficial. At any rate we had an abbreviated church service anyway with extra care taken to avoid the transfer of the virus due to taking the Lord's Supper. I was happy with that.

I pray this virus will be contained and eliminated soon and that the economy will recover quickly. I pray just as hard or harder that God will help me find a full time job.

Finally got my Census background check finished today and they emailed me the forms to fill out. I completed them and sent them back quickly of course. We didn't have church this last Sunday so I had to have my own services here at home. It wasn't remotely close to being the same even though I'm not known for being overly sociable. Singing the first verses of three barely remembered songs without any music, reading some chapters in the Bible, reading the daily prayer that I use every day anywhere and observing the Lord's Supper (makeshift). No not the same at all.

While I was walking Murphy Monday when a very large male Boxer named "Tank" came after her. It was normally tethered in the backyard of a house up the street but this time it was out on the street. I stopped Murphy once I sited it and we continued on down the street when it ran into the backyard of the house again. But once we were past the house I heard something and Tank came bearing own on us. He jumped on Murphy and forced her to the ground, snarling and popping his jaws. I started hitting him on the back and head with the wooden dowel rod that I carried. But quickly the dowel rod broke. Not sure how I got Murphy free of him. Fortunately she wasn't hurt much. One of her front and one of her back legs seemed somewhat injured the next couple of days but she seems to be all better now. I bought a larger dowel rod at Walmart the next day. Twice the size of my old one. I've also been walking her while wearing my big thick leather working gloves. I used to use them to help down build fences. I figure that if they can stand up to barbed wire that they can resist a dogs bite. Also hope I don't have to find out.

There is nothing new to report on Camille's health and treatment. The social distance stuff has made it somewhat more difficult to get timely reports about her. Her parents did send everyone in the family pictures of her and her five year old sister (Elliott) playing. They both seemed very happy. Sweet baby girls.

Speaking of baby girls, we've leaving Saturday to spend the Easter weekend with Annalee. We'll stay overnight on Saturday and come back on Sunday. Of course I'm looking forward to seeing her again but I dread staying overnight in her apartment with the three of us plus her dog Bo and of course Murphy.

    All for the moment.

We traveled Saturday to go visit Annalee for Easter. It wasn't that enjoyable a trip. As I had worried, all three of us and Bo (full name, Bo Barkley Bennett) and Murphy (Murphy Gail Kitchens) Bo and Murphy being two dogs in Annalee's one bedroom apartment was rather stressful. Especially given it was rainy and stormy from late Saturday to early Sunday. Smackover got blitzed by bad weather including some tornadoes not too far off.

We got home Sunday in good order but at around 7:30 Sunday night the electricity went out all over town. It stayed out until after 11:00 last night. I had avoided bathing at Annalee's due to not wanting to go to the hassle and being unable to do so Sunday night because of the electricity being out left me feeling filthy and grungy. So we borrowed a key to the Family Life Center at Amy's church (First Baptist) late Monday afternoon, took showers there and washed some clothes and our sheets. Fortunately the electricity came back on and despite the chilly weather most everything is well now.

    All for the moment.

Not much new. I'm returning to daddy's house tomorrow with the mower to tackle the yard. It has grown up a lot recently and will be quite a task with thick low level grass not to mention tall stemmy stuff. Amy and I went to work clean up at daddy's last Friday. It was an enjoyable trip. We got at least six large trash bags full and moved alongside the road for the trash truck to pick up. Why they still have trash service on a dirt road where no one lives for at least the first two miles is beyond me. It has proven useful in recent times of course.

We've found various things of family historical interest up there. One was entirely by accident. Ironic I found it when it went through the dryer at our house. It was my grandfather (daddy's fathers) W2 form (or the equivalent from that era) from 1952. It was from the Dierks Coal & Lumber Company and stated that A.B. (Andrew Bert) Kitchens had been paid $4,901 in 1952. That's the equivalent of more than $47,000 today. So my grandfather was not as poor as I used to think. It is an interesting document to have.

I'm going to see my doctor this afternoon about the place on the end of my great toe (right foot) that has never healed. I've been worried about it for some time. I can't get into the Wound Care clinic without a referral from my PCP. I suppose I wouldn't be nearly as worried if I hadn't had to have my great toe on my left foot amputated a couple of years ago after an infection that started out as a blister.

We've had some bad weather here recently with a short hailstorm Saturday night. I was worried about our three vehicles as I had no chance to get them under cover but they apparently were undamaged.

    All for the moment.

Looks like I'm going to have to have my other Great Toe (right foot) amputated eventually. I got violently ill at the doctors office on Monday afternoon and though I made an appointment to the Wound Care clinic for Thursday morning, I vomited four more times on Tuesday. Including in the SUV on the way back from the doctors office. Amy can't stand being around people who are sick at their stomachs so she was no help to me of course. It makes her feel guilty that she doesn't help me more as when she is sick I'm always close at hand, wiping her face, providing water andwhat have you.

I had hoped things were going to be better when my fever broke completely early Tuesday morning but as I indicated above I got worse as the day went on so Tuesday night Amy convinced me to go to the ER. They put an IV in me to rehydrate me and gave me some antibiotics. They X-rayed my toe and the doctor said it might be infected to the bone which meant that it might have to be amputated. I had feared this a great deal. I got sick at my stomach in a minor way this morning but that was because Murphy jumped on my chest this morning and choked me out.

I shouldn't. Losing the Great Toe on my left foot hasn't impaired me in any way. It has very seldom hurt. I guess what disturbs me most is that the amputation a couple of years ago what that it didn't really help anything. It turned out the infection was deeper than just the toe so I ended up stuck in the hospitals long term care center for about four weeks in 2017-2018 getting a steady stream of IV antibiotics. I missed Christmas with my family not to mention New Years and a lot of other things. All in all it was arguably the low point of my recent life. Even lower than my too frequent employment problems.

I'll have to keep praying and enduring I suppose.

    All for the moment.

Well I'm going to have the big toe on my right foot amputated next Tuesday morning. I met with the doctor this morning and he said he just didn't see it ever healing without amputation.. He said that the only alternative was to clean it out, put a port in it and then have me on IV antibiotics for six weeks. And he said that even at the most optimistic if it healed he thought it would take 6 months.

I can't be out of action of six months. I've got to find a new job long before then. But I'll admit to a special aversion to having another toe amputated. I thought after losing the big toe on my left foot in December of 2017 that I could avoid those kinds of problems in the future but I guess not. There is also diminished blood flow in two of the arteries in my right leg. My left leg is fine. The doctor said this indicated some Peripheral Artery Disease caused by my Type II Diabetes, but he didn't consider it bad enough to effect my recovery from the amputation.

Camille won't have another chemotherapy treatment until next Tuesday. She has quit talking for some reason. She is walking again though. Everyone says the thing about stopping talking is pretty typical for babies when something traumatic is happening to them.

I hate the idea of losing another big toe, but on the upside it should make my case stronger at my Disability hearing on May 12th. I still don't expect to gain any benefits.

    All for the time being.

Well this morning is the morning. Amy and Annalee are driving me to the hospital in about 10 minutes. They plan to start the amputation about 8:45 with it estimated to take about an hour though it could be longer as the surgeon plans to debride the planar ulcers on the bottom of my left foot as well. I'll admit to dread of this though I can't put my finger on exactly why.

    All for the moment.

surgery went well according to the surgeon. He is pretty certain he got all the infection. I'm home now with little pain. Got to stay off of it about a week to avoid pulling out the stiches. I'm using a walker (with difficulty). He worked on debriding the two planar ulcers on my left foot as well but he said they look better than they ever have with no signs of infection. All in all I couldn't have asked for better. Hospital staff was really nice to me.

Third full day since my toe amputation. It hasn't hurt any at all really. There was bleeding the first day and Amy worried last night when she changed the dressing that some of the sutures had broken but she sent pictures of it to Annalee who said even though it was the worst job of suturing she had ever seen (she is a surgical technician) that it didn't look like any of them had broken.

But I was almost reduced to tears. Between the loss of the big toe and how it was sutured up, the scars from my three previous surgeries on the top of my foot from three years ago that cost me all the tendons there, and my remaining paralyzed toes "drawing up" as though I'm suffering from the Achilles Tendon problem in my right leg that my left leg has.....my foot looks horribly deformed. I can't bare the thought of ever going barefoot in public or swimming again even after my feet have healed. I feel like I've been crippled. Maimed. Though I trust the surgeon did the best he could.

Having to stay off my feet as much as possible and do nothing but type on the internet and watch tv is also not helping my disposition. And because I'm not expending much energy my appetite is way off and I'm waking up about 6 in the morning.

I did get a call from the Census Bureau asking me if I was still interested in a temporary job with them. I told them I was of course. Training will begin sometime after June 1sts. Of course I really want another teaching and football coaching job.

Camille had another treatment Tuesday. Everything appears to be fine.

    All for the moment.

Still haven't gotten my stiches out and I'm still not supposed to push it when it comes to walking around. But I have started driving some again. This is good because I hate to high heaven having to ride with my wife. She isn't a bad driver I suppose but there are quirks about her driving that I absolutely can't stand despite the fact that she avoids hitting anything. I get to see a doctor on Friday at 1:30 and I hope the stiches get taken out. What I don't like is that Amy wants us to go see her parents on Saturday and stay with them both Saturday and Sunday night. That is a massive hassle as we will have to take Murphy and tether her at Amy's parents house and she gets extremely upset being tied up in their car port at night. Not to mention with dressings still on my feet I can't get in and out of the bathtub without help. I really hate the thought of being up there two nights.

Of course on Saturday we're going by my daddys house though given my current condition I doubt we'll clean up much. We'll also go by Harmony Cemetery where my mom and dad are buried. The Sunday before Memorial Day was traditionally the day we had the annual decoration at the cemetery but given most of dad's extended family are dead now and no one lives close it has fallen by the wayside. We'll still go by there briefly anyway.

Annalee came on Friday evening and stayed till Sunday morning. She slept over at Amy Lou's (my sister Deanna's only child). They both came over and helped Amy clean up the house. They focused mainly on the kitchen and later on Amy's craft room. It stormed heavily Saturday night and into Sunday with the tornado sirens howling for more than half and hour. Despite that all we had was extremely heavy rain. Surprisingly the electricity didn't even go off.

Amy and I both needed to really get out of the house on Sunday so we drove up to Little Rock. I have really wanted to go to Barnes & Noble. I really wanted the Spring issue of Hoover Digest but they didn't have it. So I got copies of National Review, The Economist, and Analog. But what really bothered me was that during the shutdown Barnes and Noble decided to redo the layouts on the interiors of all their stores so it was damned near impossible for me to find stuff there. And I didn't feel like walking around for a prolonged period. Still don't. The bottom line is that by the time I'm fully cleared for full mobility again I'm going to be in dreadful physical shape. At least I've been losing some weight.

    All for the moment.

My birthday this last Wednesday did not go to well. Amy had an appointment with an endocrinologist in Little Rock so we figured that I would go to Barnes & Noble and Office Depot and shop for my "gift". I had at least hoped to find a copy of the most recent issue of Hoover Digest at the North Little Rock store after failing at the Little Rock store a week or so before but I failed there too. No Hoover Digest, no National Review, no current issue of The Economist. I struck out completely. The I went next door to Office Depot to attempt to print some of the saved images from one of my flash drives but the girl in the copy center was so incompetent that it was taking forever so I finally told her to not bother and give me back my flash drive. She apologized and gave me the 12 black and white prints she had completed for free (big deal as that's only $1.44 of printing in total).

We went to meet Annalee at her apartment and later had supper at The Bear Cafe. I enjoyed it. They have the feature where they serve a breakfast menu all day. So I had scrambled eggs, bacon and French toast. The bacon wasn't crispy enough but everything else was nice. Even better, Annalee paid.

The Saturday before that Amy wanted to go and see her parents during Memorial Day weekend. I didn't want to stay overnight there but given that Amy hadn't seen them since back in January I agreed. I had gotten the stitches out of my foot where my toe was amputated the Friday before and that Saturday was the first day in two and a half weeks I put on regular shoes again. The amputation spot seems to be well healed. Now the doctor is making plans on dealing with the two Planar ulcers on the bottom of my left foot. I was going to have a cast put on but I'm putting that off since I have an interview as a driver for a local agency on June 11th and I sure don't want to show up for an interview with a cast on my left foot.

I'm depressed about medical problems of other people. The lady who is a good friend of my sister Donna at Arkansas Blvd. Church of Christ who has been troubled by major abdominal pains....turns out she has inoperable pancreatic cancer. Her and her husband are discussing plans on what to do.

And I just found out this morning that a preacher I like and respect a great deal (who ironically beat Pancreatic Cancer back around 1980) has been diagnosed with Lymphoma!. I can't believe how many people I care about are suffering from deadly illness.

Hopefully church tomorrow will raise my spirits.

    All for the moment.
