    Carried a thermos jug with him on the set of a major 1958 War movie.
    Inside the jug were a combination Vodka and prescription drugs.
    His was called " the longest suicide in Hollywood ".
    He was truly a special and uniquely gifted actor.
    Said to have acted with his father in mind { an ultra-conservative bigot }
    as the antagonist.

    to the age of 85,His mother outlived him.Living to age 109.
    This actor was known for his wisecracking roles in light comedy.
    Starred in the perfect dog days of summer movie { Mid 50's }
    alongside Hollywoods biggest actress.

    The Big movie he starred in takes place in the dog days of summer
    and involves stuff like sending the wife and kid out for a summer
    vacation with a rafting paddle.Then stuff like air conditioning and a nosy
    maintenance man.

    This from an Actress still with us.Retired after spending 50 years
    in Film.
    " As I understand it,[he] later became a nice guy,a gentleman,but when
    we worked together back then,he was pretentious,egotistical, a brat
    and an as*hole -- and that's just for starters ! "

    Very powerful and convincing command of dialogue.
    He was a staunch Conservative.Always dressed to the nines.
    Stumbled into acting in 1914 after briefly managing one of his
    father's Cleveland restaurants.Going to New York after a variety
    of odd jobs.Enlisted for WWI and became a Captain of the Ambulance
    corps.Briefly serving as production mngr.of the Van Buren film company
    in New York.
    Among one of the Founders in 1944 of the Motion Picture Alliance
    for the Preservation of American Ideals.
    Given the chance and the time I think Menjou would indubitably
    have been among one of President Trump's strongest supporters.
    I do believe.

    I just learned something tonight after watching a near rare
    60's B & W Film { remastered for Criterion Collection }.
    A slow-paced and often dull presentation where the New York
    city scenery is very New York.But also somewhat the Bowery.
    Not exactly something to write home about.It's a rather simplistic
    almost morality play regarding a young lady { in college } who
    stays at home and seems bored silly with the normalcy,
    The movie starts out with her getting raped as she heads home from
    school.Some big lug sneaks out of the bushes { was waiting for }
    and rapes her.She manages to make it home alright,and washes herself off
    as she shreds all her clothing she wore while being raped.She goes to bed
    and becomes sick and can no longer manage to gain the strength to
    attend classes.Plus her experience on the L-Train and all the rapid
    pushing and shoving in the preceding days causes her to become
    almost permanently sick.
    The Actress is Carol Baker from - Baby Doll - a Mid-50's film that
    was renown for it's censorship.Regardless of the many stars acting.
    It was considered Too risqué for public consumption and the Catholic
    League had it banned,on moral grounds.
    In -Something Wild - Carol Baker { still with us } did an
    Interview regarding her role.It was on an additional DVD.She briefly
    explained her career leading up to that Movie and also something that
    struck me.
    She explained { as someone trained in the Actors Studio } what
    the Director wanted from her *performance,Regardless of the Writer
    { Tennessee Williams } who preferred bizarre characters and dialogue.
    Williams wanted the character of - Baby Doll - to be even More
    bizarre.Williams { a great yet idiosyncratic styled playright } was
    told to be careful about putting Bizarre on top of already Bizarre.
    - Baby Doll - was considered already too Bizarre.
    That is what I learned tonight.Not to be quick to pile Bizarre on top
    of already bizarre.It won't work ... like with - Baby Doll - { 1956 }
    As a Movie - Something Wild - { 1961 } is very weak and lacking.
    Obviously it did absolutely nothing for the career of it's stars
    Carol Baker and Ralph Meeker.Yet it did have merit.Probably due to
    very realistic New York city locale and watching a grown up - Baby Doll -
    try to squeamishly adapt to growing pains and life in the Biggest of
    cities.On the wrong side of tracks,nevertheless.

    * In - Something Wild - as opposed to - Baby Doll -.

    Who Lived to be 91 and died recently.
    " When I was a Kid livin' in Kentucky
    I had this BB gun,it didn't shoot straight.So I was
    out one day shootin' at things,trees & leaves.And there
    was a mockingbird up in a tree.He's singing his heart out.
    And ... I aimed my gun just to scare him away and pulled
    the trigger ... and the singing Stopped.The
    saddest moment in my whole life. "

    Yes the man from - Repo Man - { 1984 } a sci-fi style
    classic and also bit roles like - Cool Hand Luke - { 1967 }
    ended on a somewhat high note with his portrayal of
    hisself in - Lucky - { 2017 } as a man { all alone but nevertheless
    still plenty of gumption left } is entering his final stage on Earth.
    As an old coot whose barely hanging on and still smokes his
    normal pack a day of cigs.
    I see where he was never married.Sort of rare to find that in
    Hollywood.Even actors that are Bisexual tend to have married.

    One of those character faces in the back of the front row in so many movies.
    In the 21st Century the Entertainment Industry ignores these faces,
    everyone is beautiful. Except the fat chix who y'gotta luv because it is P.C.
    I remember him in Alien.

    One of the best , unexpectedly, hosts of SNL was Broderick Crawford.
    [IMG]
    They brought out the big, comfy, old fashion, leather chair for him on stage
    and his monologue dealt with how not being one of the Pretty Ones had
    staying power.

    After investing in some educated script writers,
    I would like to see the entertainment industry find more Crawfords and Stantons.

    BTW very easy to ID with the hints put in a google search :)

    What Did I Win ?
    Besides an expected, "Like".

    Broderick Crawford was a trip.Literally.He actualy saw
    hisself as a sort of Popeye.Starting from his earliest of roles
    - Seven Sinners - { 1940 } against the backdrop of the South
    Pacific and one strong willed female { Marlene Dietrich }
    thoughts of being Shanghaied where he stood out like
    Popeye.No finer example of being gruff and grumpy existed
    in Hollywood.Plus he was a notorious Boozer.Once getting
    plowed in their trailer { dressing room } with Lon Chaney
    and holding up production till they finished their Boozing
    fight.
    He did 2 exemplary Movies - All the King's Men - { 1949 }
    where he won his Oscar and another opposite the Perky
    Brooklynite Judy Holiday in - Born Yesterday - {1950} opposite a
    very handsome and suave William Holden.
    Of course there was his near unduplicated TV series :
    - Highway Patrol - { Mid 50's }.
    His sort is sorely missed around Hollywood these days.
    One can never accuse the rough-and-tumble actor of
    missing his mark.He was Always on cue to be hisself.
    Nothing less.
    He enrolled in Harvard but dropped out after just 3 weeks
    and worked for awhile as a New York waterfront longshoreman
    and tanker seaman.
    Starred on Broadway as Lenny in the great Steinbeck
    classic - Of Mice and Men -. Lon Chaney did the Film version
    opposite Burgess Meredith.
    Disillusioned with Hollywood and bitter over his movie
    roles he spent much of the 60's and 70's in Italy and Spain.
    I have his 1971 - Night Gallery - TV performance.Again,
    showcasing his rough-and-tumble nature as a Boozer and
    bully.

    Old Hollywood and BritLand too had its' boozers and regular lushes.
    The Barrymores for one. Seems genetic Drew was a "recovered alcoholic" at age 7.
    Robert Shaw was probably one of the last, unless there are ones I am not considering.
    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001727/?ref_=tt_cl_t2

    Today, I believe Charles Martin Smith may be the last of those, "funny looking"
    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001747/?ref_=tt_cl_t3

    or just not pretty, men in the back ground. What staying power.
    Just as Crawford said in his SNL prologue.

    Who or where are they today.
    Smith goes back decades. Like back to the seventies and American Graffiti.

    BTW the idea of an actor disgusted that Hollywood doesn't let them express their full artistic talents is hardly, unique.

    Almost since it's inception Hollywood has played
    politics with it's actors.In it's heyday { the 30's }
    Actors and especially Actress were expected to be
    on their best behavior and attend all the studio boss'
    weekly soiree.Usually meant to both plug a film
    or for public relations.I see where Gloria Alred is trying
    her darnest to influence the Sundance Film Festival.
    There were those Great Actress who never liked those
    soiree.They were true to their art.They lived to be as
    good as humanly possible in any role they conquered.
    Like a Barbara Stanwyck.The highest paid actress of the
    40's.Then there were rebels like Ava Gardner { once
    considered the most Beautiful woman in Hollywood }.
    She was married to Mickey Rooney before Frank
    Sinatra.She broke with Hollywood protocol and decorum
    and started going out nights Unescorted.
    She wasn't a very skilled or disciplined Actress.
    But I loved her ending in - Mogambo - { 1953 }
    She beat out Grace Kelly for the heart of Clark Gable.
    She flirted her way right into The arms of the King of
    Hollywood { Gable }. They ended-up rowing off into the
    sunset together.Very romantic.Quite touching.
    I wonder how *Joe Yule Jr. felt.He musta felt like
    tinkle warmed over.

    * Mickey Rooney outlived most all those Golden Agers.
    I really admired his role in - Requiem for a Heavyweight - {1962}
    He played " Army " to Jackie Gleason's " Maish ".
    Died of natural causes at age 93.
    His early roles were as full of spunk as they come.
    Like in - Boy's Town - { 1938 } within a year of his
    buddy Judy Garland scoring with - The Wizard of Oz -.{1939 }
    They teamed up for the highly popular - Andy Hardy - series.
    Standing not even 5 ' tall Judy Garland was also a flirt
    as was Ava Gardner.But her early micromanagement by her
    parents and the studio system where pills were handed out
    like candy to keep her awake and then able to go to sleep
    ruined her.

    I'm having a difficult time trying to interpret his last
    movie.Which was,I guess a reflection of his philosophical
    bent.That,in a nutshell,Life is reduced to nothingness.
    I understand that completely.In fact,I wrote about it.
    That our kin { grandparents on down to Great Grandparents }
    will eventually ALL be forgotten.Maybe sooner than thought.
    Maybe even in our lifetime.That no matter how great or accomplished,the rule is people,places and things,over time,
    diminish and almost disappear as if never existing.
    Take someone like Thomas Edison.The most talked about
    and accomplished Inventor of last century and probably all of
    America.You will be hard pressed to ever hear his name.
    He's become not just jaded but forgotten.
    In another 100 years his name will be like some
    insignificant relic.
    That is what Harry Dean Stanton was driving at.
    We live,We see and learn and experience and then it's
    gone like a blink of the eye,once we pass.There are no
    exceptions.The golden rule is simple and kind of hard to
    swallow.
    No one gets out of life ... Alive.

    Trivia time ... Folks.
    Name this actress who is very recognizable yet many
    may have a hard time naming her.
    Has THE Most Emmy Awards of any Hollywood Actress or
    Actor.Is still with us.One recognizable trait she dominates
    in her Career is she's a virtual scene stealer.
    However,ironically,she won an Academy Award { Best Supporting Actress }
    demonstrating the exact opposite trait.She played a forlorn and
    passive housewife having a secret affair.A mousy characterization.
    Normally her characters range anywhere from Over-the-top Zany
    to aggressive scene schmoozing.

    She is still with us and very much The Actress.
    She starred in The Most Famous of Twilight Zone episodes.
    As the Mother of a child Monster.Her role wasn't anything like
    what Mel Brooks intended in his Zany horror spoofs.
    She also starred in her own TV series.
