An editorial published Friday in the New England Journal of Medicine speculated that the coronavirus currently causing panic in world markets could turn out no worse than “a severe seasonal influenza” in terms of mortality.

Citing an analysis of the available data from the outbreak in China, the authors note that there have been zero cases among children younger than 15; and that the fatality rate is 2% at most, and could be “considerably less than 1%.”

Those who have died have been elderly or were already suffering from another illness — as with ordinary flu. The underlying data suggest that the symptoms varies, and fewer than one in six of the cases reported were “severe.”

The authors note that coronavirus looks to be much less severe than other recent outbreaks of respiratory illnesses:

[T]he overall clinical consequences of Covid-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of a severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.

You should have changed your username to Bush Doctor before you posted that so more ignorant people would have believed you.

    Exactly, BL.

This is all a bunch of Alarmist BS to get Trump.

The coronavirus is so benign that it makes a mild head cold look like the Bubonic Plague.

Yup, forget about it. No worries.

Based on this calming news, I am totally expecting the Market to regain (at least) 4,000 points tomorrow.

Lol...You don’t really understand the facts, do you?
The death rate of seasonal flu is 1 in 1000, and it kills millions each year worldwide.
The death rate of corona virus is 1 in 150.
    Do the math.

...why do you keep track of the murder rate, broken down by the race of the perpetrator, in New Orleans?

Linking the New England journal article directly would have been more informative.

The study appears to find that the lower range for the lethality of the virus is akin to a severe influenza outbreak and thats...good? I guess?

But it also relies on a "could be" the case for the data which is not currently known. The "could be" the case on the higher edge of the range is a mortality rate that is ~20x higher than the typical influenza.

There is value in being optimistic and recognizing that the infectious rate and the mortality rate can both be reduced through better preparation, better understanding, and better practices.

Some folks want to give trump the Nobel prize over a virus that's killed more Americans than ebola.

I trust the New England Journal of Medicine...and the peer review the doctors do there. Who did your “could be” study? Jessie?

I find this odd. Generally, kids are among the most affected due to not having acquired the anti-bodies that come with age & prior illness. scratchchin-thumb.gif

Because the only people that do the killing in New Orleans are blacks. So do you want to take that bet too?

1 in 150 cases of infected individuals?
How do you know every case of infection?

I think we should wait until at least 1000 people die before we impeach 45.

It's a "hoax!" like anthropogenic climate change.

There is no reason for preparedness, but Giuliani is blaming Mexico.

Not all seasonal flu cases are reported either so Surfer Joe's post still stands:
"The death rate of seasonal flu is 1 in 1000, and it kills millions each year worldwide.
The death rate of corona virus is 1 in 150
    "

Hey, another post on these articles, citing the RW spin on them, rather than the actual articles:

    https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMe2002387?query=RP
    https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2002032?query=RP

Folks, read the original article, if you want to be informed, not the Breitbart spin on them.

Here is what the authors actually said on the fatality rate:

"We found a lower case fatality rate (1.4%) than the rate that was recently reportedly,1,12 probably because of the difference in sample sizes and case inclusion criteria. Our findings were more similar to the national official statistics, which showed a rate of death of 3.2% among 51,857 cases of Covid-19 as of February 16, 2020.11,24 Since patients who were mildly ill and who did not seek medical attention were not included in our study, the case fatality rate in a real-world scenario might be even lower. Early isolation, early diagnosis, and early management might have collectively contributed to the reduction in mortality in Guangdong."

The fools who claim that climate change is a chinese hoax are the same fools who now think that the virus is a media hoax.
Unfortunately for them, the consequences of their willful ignorance will come back to bite them in the ass in a much faster time frame on this issue.
