The biggest surprise about Newt are his numbers in New Hampshire. I can't recall the last candidate that won both Iowa and New Hampshire in a primary. These are vastly different republicans that seem to be finding common ground with Gingrich. Tea Party loves him because of his track record on lowering deficits. And as the article below points out, while Newt is by no stretch an establishment favorite, he does seem to have some favorability with them as well. Throw in his experience, charisma and debating skills, and we may be looking at our next president.

Why Gingrich Is Romney's Toughest Challenge Yet

While I wouldn’t describe him as a favorite of the GOP establishment, he maintains a favorable sentiment among portions of it to an extent that isn’t true of the previous insurgencies. Witness this reasonably favorable article from Fred Barnes in the Weekly Standard. Gingrich was a longtime scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and has been a regular on the Republican rubber-chicken circuit. And his message, while insurgent and reformist, has always paid lip service to social issues: The “Contract With America” famously avoided hot-button social issues in favor of “good government reforms.”

At the same time, many rank-and-file GOP’ers fondly recall his role in bringing about the first Republican House majority in 40 years. His message is still an outsider, reformist one that should have resonance with Tea Partiers. And while he’s largely avoided social issues, he has been consistent on them (when pressed) to an extent that Romney has not. Combine these two, and you have an appeal that is potentially broad enough to gain traction in both Iowa and New Hampshire.

    Looking forward to your comments,

..........and from our leftists friends those very sophisticated insults (fat, ugly, yada yada yada).

He has a lot of baggage and his platform isn't 100% on track. However, it's hard to argue with his record. He very nearly balanced the budget, and as for foreign policy, he says "I'm a hawk, but I'm a cheap hawk".

It was the establishment Rep's who helped nudge Newt out of Congress because he was just.. "well ...to conservative"....but his rise in the Polls is no surprise if you've watched the debates. However, the MSM is already throwing stones, attacking him, not his policy and will declare all out war on Newt (mostly personal of course) if it looks like he'll be the nominee. They may want to keep their powder dry though. He will be the nominee and they'll want to save their best dirty bombs until Oct 2012.

In some ways, the attacks are good. Not fun, but we're going to have one tough nominee at the end of this.

And the best time to attack a candidate is actually pre primary, as the candidates competitors with either stand by and watch you sink, or pile on. Once the candidate is chosen, the wagons will circle, unless there's a bitter McCain like candidate looking to sabotage things.

GOP primary front-runners go down faster than a conservative senator in an airport bathroom. When it's all said and done, Romney will be facing Obama; until then, we'll enjoy the freak show.

That's because the GOP electorate is intelligent and taking their time vetting their candidates. Too bad you guys didn't do that. Ooops!

Its amazing how stupid liberals are when it comes to elections. They have no sense of history or how things work.

:-D:-D No you didn't hire anyone; you just sit here for weeks defending the Pizza man and blaming "Politico", oh no I am sorry "Rick Perry", oh no, my bad, "Liberal Media" for his groping habits. So what happened to the grope master? I though he was innocent? Where the heck did he go?
Never mind, you are just busy adoring - oh I am sorry -"vetting" Gingrich!
    :-D

Doesn't that depend on your choices?

    You may prefer Romney.

    I may like Ron Paul.

But if the choice is Newt or Barack Obama that's no choice at all.

    It's Newt all the way.
