Preface: no, Im not saying cops should get away with murder. Lets try to avoid irrational extremes for a bit and focus on concept.

Some people make enforcing the law necessarily violent. The less leeway we give cops, the less people are going to be willing to walk such a fine line. If we make the line too fine and don't allow for any mistakes, no one is going to risk being a cop.

Which I'm actually OK with, personally. I've never called the cops except twice when someone else asked me to call cops for them (I wouldn't have called for myself in the same circumstance). Quite frankly I'd be happy and prosperous living in Mad Max or The Walking Dead.

But chances are, you wouldn't. And no, thats not an insult. Its simply a statement of fact that people who feel safer entirely on their own are a minority. If you're less abnormal than I am, then its likely that you do or will need cops. Certainly society as a whole needs them.

Which means they need to be able to be human and make mistakes. Somewhere between crushing a guys neck while he begs for air (which should never happen) and an elderly or infirm suspect being treated a bit too harshly due to accident or adrenaline (which will innevitably happen in the course of preserving order), is an acceptable amount of 'brutality' thats necessary to preserve the order that society requires to function.

The alternative is we don't tolerate any mistakes and eventually theres no cops and the only order you'll enjoy is that which you're able enforce yourself.

Low pay. Bad working conditions. Very difficult work. Must interact mainly with the slime and dregs of society. Little appreciation. Targeted for death. Subject to assassinations.

Yeah, we're going to be our own law enforcement in our castles and on our lawns, every man and woman for themselves.

    Some good points.

But who knows - maybe the promise of change will attract more philosophy majors and fewer meathead types?

But the stress of that job - oy.

I'd shoot the first person that called me a pig.

So the wealthy will hire their own security and the poor (minorities) will be left to defend themselves.

Everything liberals touch turns to sh-t.

I just don't see a philosophy major sifting through kiddie porn to bust a pedo or scraping a drunk high schooler off the freeway... not more than once, anyway.

...maybe I just didn't know the right philosophy majors.

    Well, who knows, right?

The big problem is that communities of color want the police to protect them, but not harass them.

They want the eyes of the law, but with that comes excessive scrutiny and over-enforcement.

If the cops spent all their time at the Stock Exchange, there'd be a LOT of traders in jail.

Im not against trying it. Not personally, anyway. But I'm gonna have trouble enjoying my sniper perch at the top of a castle built out of junked cars and freeway dividers munching coyote burgers and homemade strawberry wine if all I can see from there is the suffering of everyone else who doesn't think that sounds like a good time.

"No one is going to want to be a cop soon."

oh boo hoo, cops are being asked to protect the public from bad cops - is that too much to ask?

if we ended the war on drugs today, the cops jobs would be a 1000 times easier

most cops do not want to be the "Fun Police", many good cops decided not to be cops as that is not what they signed up for, they want to be the good guys

what we are left with is people that have no problem arresting people for having a good time while not hurting anyone

That's not it. The left has done to cops what they did to soldiers in the 1960's when they called anyone in a military uniform a "baby killer".

Absolutely true. Just where in the hell do pols get off making laws concerning anyone else's "morality" anyway? On drugs, we spend literally trillions making the problems worse and on sex, we spend more trillions driving our selves and our children crazy

I remember seeing an article some decades ago about the three ways we could pay off the National Debt, and the first one was to make most "victimless" crime either legal or a tortious offense.

So driving a car blitzed drunk or coked out of your mind is fine as long as you don’t hurt anyone? The roads would be pretty dangerous

A long-term friend of mine was a respected district court judge for 20 years. For many years, when we got together, I would always ask him how the judging business was going; we would discuss law and order. Here is one of the best ways he ever put it:

"The best regulator is the self-regulator. The only reason we have laws is that many people will not self-regulate, and the process of enforcement and consequence is the only way that society can protect itself from them. If everybody self-regulated, I'd be out of a job....."

Point being that while a society with minimal form of police could work, it requires that the members of that society, each and every one of them, be self-regulating people of very good character.
Lacking that, you have either an adequate police and legal system, or you have an armed and running battle between the good people and the trash of that society. The latter could not produce a society that could prosper or provide anyone a safe place to live or raise families; it would be instead a land of predators and prey; and the injustice of that would make the injustice people protest today comparable to a single grain of sand on the beach.

Those who demand perfection from the police would never ask it of themselves.

Yeah because the stock traders make up less than 13% of the population and yet they commit around 50% of all of our violent crime.

Oh wait no... that’s black people. Never mind.

Not really, we pretty much do that anyway since most drunk/drugged drivers are never caught and even fewer lose their licenses.

There is a device that won't let you start your car unless you pass a small test of driving acuity or blow into a breathalyzer. IMO that ought to be totally non-removable and on every car on the road

What can I said, I believe in Jefferson’s quote:

I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful servitude.

Oh baloney....most cops are good, decent people who do NOT believe they can kill willy nilly…they do NOT wish to be lawless "dominating" thugs..

There are still engineers after bridges collapse. There are still car manufacturers after design flaws kill drivers. There are still doctors after patients die from mistakes.

There will still be cops because they are needed but like everyone else with Freedom comes restrictions.

In a profession where a violent reaction is a necessity to save yourself or someone else’s life sometimes, why do you think people will continue to be cops when you take their ability to react violently away?

Uh, I have seen cops in action many times and they aren't always violent...uh,duh, their job is to stop violence not encourage it...

But don't complain if you're beaten to a pulp when you get your next speeding ticket...the cop was just doing his job :) :)
