In 1 Samuel 15:3, God orders the Israelites to kill not just an opposing tribes' adult population of men and women.....but also its children and even babies.

There is no "context" to this. The childrena and babies did NOTHING to the Israelities and it would have been perfectly easy for them to spare the children and adopt them into their own tribes, rather than murder them.

So clearly God in the Bible has no problem with the murder of actual born children.....not even mentioning those who drowned in Noah's Flood in Genesis or the first-born of Egypt that He killed so mercilessly in Exodus.

Mind you, this is only directed at those who believe in the "God of the Bible" and use His supposed "love for children" to oppose abortion rights.

It's a quick "stumper" for those who use the Biblical God as part of their rationale for opposing abortion.......here you have a Deity that deliberately ORDERED the killing of not even fetuses....but babies and even older children.

(BTW, the typical Religious Forum argument against it is "You're taking that out of context"...to which the question easily becomes "Okay, explain the 'context' that makes it moral and good for God to order infanticide?")

I have always wondered why every epic story begins with the slaughter of innocents.. Peculiar God.... or just tribal stories ???

The tribalism of the Hebrews/Israelites meant they saw nothing "immoral" in slaughtering the children of their enemies....and then claiming "God said we should do it."

Naturally, this is obvious to the non-believer.

But the "Bible believer" believes what it says in Samuel...that God ORDERED the killing of the Amalekite children and babies....and thus must try to explain why a "God who hates abortions and loves the little babies, even when they are just a freshly fertilized eg"....

was so easy to command infanticide?

Well, just call it one more ***** in the armor of the "Pro-lifers"....among the many places their arguments fall apart. Using the Biblical God not only doesn't help them...it works against them, if you see how many times in the Bible ....God killed children.....and then they try to claim "God loves fertilized eggs in a uterus"????

In tribal warfare during that time, males who lived among a tribe went to war to avenge the side who killed their tribe in war. The children were a threat because they could grow up to be warriors and get revenge.

So you'd support killing children who were a "threat"?

So you support self-defense......by these people but not for women today.

    Why not?

Do you think the bombings in Europe during two world wars were wrong?

Do you believe the bombings in Afghanistan , Iraq, etc., were wrong?

Do you believe the bombing in the Civil War were wrong?

Did you have a point or just can't address the issue?

Sam is trying to resolve a paradox.

He's been brought up a "Bible believing Christian"...AND as a social conservative who opposes abortion. And that those two things confirm and compliment each other. That "God hates abortion"....and "The Bible proves that"....and "The Bible is truth."

But God as the murderer of children...which the Bible clearly shows him to be....contradicts that.

He sees contradiction...but he's not allowed to believe in contradiction. He excuse the murder of the Amalekites by blaming it on "tribalism"...i.e. blaming the Israelites. And this is true, if you don't believe in the Bible....but if you DO believe in the Bible, it was GOD who ordered the killing of the Amalekite children.

God also drowned the children in the Flood.....killed the first-born of Egypt in Exodus. If you believe the Bible that is.

And so, cognitive dissonance is created. (For his benefit, that is defined as "psychological conflict resulting from incongruous beliefs and attitudes held simultaneously"...in other words believing two contradictory things are both true...thus making the person uncomfortable or stressful).

Margot, Sam has this fairly well developed "strategy"....of trying to force people to change the subject when he gets stuck for an answer for the original topic.....uses it constantly.

    Don't let him.

Firstborn of Egypt dead because of something Ramses did disqualifies the Christian God from ever being considered pro-life. Sodom and Gomorrah, those who weren't on the Ark, etc. The Christian god has no qualms about ending lives, guilty and innocent alike. Being pro-life in his name makes so little sense you might as well be pro-choice since God certainly is.

The topic of the thread is whether or not the Christian god can accurately be called "pro-life". I mentioned some things that are pretty pro-death which is a term pro-choice folks sometimes get called making me figure we might as well call God pro-choice too. Unless of course being pro-death and pro-choice aren't the same thing.

God ORDERED the Israelites to kill the Amalekite children...i.e. humans taking human life on God's orders.

    What's your next one, Sam?

A significant amount of the violence in the Bible is just regular warfare that nations do-defending their nation from attack. If you read about Samson, King David, Gideon, King Asa, Solomon,Deborah in the book of Judges-the violence they did, even though it was on a very large scale, was no different from a country defending themselves from attackers- it was just war.

Except when the Bible(s) specifically state that God did it...which you are desperately trying to avoid understanding as the truth and thus proving the Captains statement as accurate.

Name THREE examples of God telling humans to do violence in the Bible, outside of the context of enemy-enemy warfare.
