Should students and parents involved in the flag issues events also take legal action:

    [/sarcasm] ?

It's not a moral question. I'm asking if the flag is required. Maybe it's a legal question for the Supreme Court, or maybe it's just an issue we could think critically about to make sure we don't contradict our beliefs.

    Sadly, not this time.

No child left behind? In the name of equity, Oregon gets rid of math, reading, and writing requirements for graduation

And yes, having an American flag in a classroom is a requirement. Our way of life requires it.

I was horrified by the things I saw as a teacher.
In this case I suggest that each class gets a homework assignment:
What does the American flag mean to you?
Do you feel good or bad when you see it?
Are there other flags that mean something to you?
Are you proud or ashamed of what the country has done the last 245 years?
How can you make the country better?

My fifth grade teacher held her hand over her stomach during the daily pledges. That bothered me at the time. When I hit puberty I started thinking she was avoiding her breasts. Now maybe I think the pledge made her sick.
If so that was my kind of silent protest.

Only a Leftist that is only exposed to CNN type propaganda would think this is true. Wow.

The Left's goal of brainwashing children to hate the U.S.A. is working beautifully. The collapse will come and they will have that Global Centralized Authoritarian Control they desire.

    It will be utopia!

Explain why our way of life requires us to have a flag in the classroom?

Is there a requirement to fly colors and have jets go by at the baseball game?

No. Why do we fly colors and have jets go by?

It is patriotic. It’s our way of life. It teaches kids respect for tradition, for America and our military.

The same applies to the flag in a classroom.

    Argue that.

13 years of reciting the pledge in school and never once felt as if religion was being pushed on me.

not all teachers are the same, but the pledge needs to be changed back so it represents all Americans again, not just the ones that believe in a God

Not anymore. The right has taken "ownership" of the American flag and turned it into a symbol of political intolerance and belligerent nationalism, which is the definition of fascism,... or was before it was "sanitized" about 30 years ago. So the teacher is correct and you are wrong.

What nations? If I was from another country I would just associate it with the most powerful nation. We’re power, not freedom. Before ww2, it was decadence. Mostly I see middle easterners burning it. To them, it’s foreigners bombing and dominating them. To native Americans, it’s genocide and illness, replacement and relegation.

    One assumes she'll very quickly be either;

    A) reassessing her 'flag policy'; or
    B) reassessing her career options.

Any bets on which option wins out?

Since she has strong community support both those options may fail when she wins the battle.

I'd hope it would be a case of 'if'. Any nations flag is supposed to be a unifying symbol for its citizens not divisiveness - which is how those on both the far right and far left use it i.e just another tool for 'the cause'.

SIAP. The reason why American flags should be in American classrooms is because American gov't provides said classrooms. Just like parochial schools have every right to have religious symbols in their schools and, I guess, atheist schools can take down said religious symbols or have their own appropriate ones.

What, should we take down flags and symbols 'cause a few are offended by said flags and symbols?

You are a libertarian and an endangered species in America (thanks in part to public schools which teach students what to think and not how to think).

EDIT: And i agree with you wholeheartedly.

Because for a society to function properly it’s people, as an aggregate, need to hold a common set of principles or values.

Our country has always had patriotism as one of those principles and values. It’s a value that the left is desperately trying to destroy.

I'm not in any way suggesting we should remove the flags. My only question is an academic question that points out a bit of a contradiction with some core values established by the Constitution--a document intended to limit the power of government. Do I have the freedom to choose to have or not have a flag in my classroom? It seems authoritarian to force that on the public.
If we don't have a flag in the classroom, does that mean there will be no patriotism? How does that flag turn students into patriots? Don't those principles and values include independence and freedom? Is required patriotism really patriotism or just conformity?
