The right wing noise machine was busy anointing Julian Assange as a speaker of truth, and denying that the Russians were his source. Recall, this occurred two months after George Papadopolous told senior Trump campaign officials (Trump was in the room) that the Russians had told him they had this material. It also occurred after the infamous Donald Trump Jr meeting. It also occurred after Manafort's offer to Oleg Deripashka to provide secret insider briefings on the goings on in the Trump campaign.

The fact that friends of Putin are deep into Trump's financial dealings are going to become a subject of public discussion in a few months as well (if not sooner). Back when Trump rode down the escalator, I thought his refusal to supply his tax returns was primarily motivated by the fact that he isn't nearly as rich as he claims to be. I knew about Russian involvement in his businesses. I was not aware of the full extent (and there is still a lot out there to learn). Mueller probably has all this information. Prosecutors can get your tax records without you knowing it. And the Trump transition team stupidly started talking back and forth in the open on .gov e-mail accounts right after the election, which made their correspondence public record. Recall that this was the period when first Jared Kushner and later Erik Prince tried to set up secret back channel communications between the White House and the Russian FSB, when Mike Flynn was going around the middle east plugging some crazy nuclear development scheme, all of them were talking to various Russians (and later trying to lie their way out of it). These guys didn't think they were going to win, and thus, had nothing to lose. They were trying to make as much money as fast as they could or secure some sort of position. All of them are political amateurs. None of them have any sense of duty or integrity. And many of them are flat out reckless. They left a trail of evidence as wide as an interstate highway.

okay...for starters, maybe high ranking government officials...Secretaries of State, for example...shouldn't conduct The People's classified business on private unsecured servers that are secreted away in their master bathrooms... and maybe when they get caught doing stuff like that they should face the music... like lowly military personnel do, for example.... versus, you know, being cleared to ascend to the most powerful political office in America... the world as we can't expect to ever slow it down, much less stop it, securing against meddling in America's business (both public and private) is America's responsibility.

But when Mitch McConnell found out about it, he threatened to turn the entire right wing noise machine on to attack the credibility of the agencies and the evidence (which is what the conservatives have been doing for the past two years anyway). Since the expectation was that Clinton was going to win anyway, the White House chose not to hand such an opportunity to Trump. In any event, the right wing "blame Obama for not stopping Trump" argument is about as lame as the rest of the excuses and distractions we have been fed steadily for 18 months. Trump, and his associates are the criminals. They are the ones who should have done what any patriotic American would have done when approached by the Russians, alert the FBI. Instead, the FBI learned about what Trump and the Russians were doing from foreign intelligence agencies (more than just one). Trump didn't do his duty as a citizen. Instead, he looked for ways to cash in. And Trump isn't going to do his duty as a citizen and confront Putin either.
