Thread title pretty much says it all. A group in Florida is getting a petition together to try to get "assault weapons" banned via an amendment to the Florida Constitution. Hopefully it won't make it to the ballot, but if it does, I think everybody will know how I'll vote. More info linked in the video.

They may as well put a ban on spiders on the ballet since those guns that antis equate under the made up term of assault weapons have as much actual threat as spiders but are vilified because they look scary.

    Why the 2020 ballot?
Why not the early 2019 ballot?

Was that the jest of what you got from my post, rather than the intended message. Sure now.

It does look like the colors my youngest girl has on her AR. She probably has her g26 in the same color scheme, unlike her older sister who favors everything in black, she’s the everything looks better in pink girl.

There's no evidence that doing so will reduce mass shootings.

Don't we vote on amendments on general election years? Either way, my guess is this will give them more time to gather signatures.

My guess is an amendment can be voted on whenever it can be put on the ballot.

As a citizen of Florida, I hate these constitutional amendments to pass what should be laws. They are manipulated by lobbyists, and usually have unintended consequences. We had 12 constitutional amendments on the ballot on November 6--most of them should have been laws. I voted against every one, but only one failed. It's just ridiculous and shows me the failings of pure democracy.

Yes, they only are voted on on general elections, which are held in November on even-numbered years.

I don't see this passing in 2020. Florida amendments need 60% of the vote, a gun ban - and it will be close to a ban on all centerfire semiauto rifles and many shotguns - will energize the gun rights community.

I read the amendment, its a ban on all semiauto rifles and shotguns which have the potential to hold 10 or more rounds, which means all semiauto rifles and shotguns which have a detachable magazine. It does not matter if there are magazines available that hold more than 10 rounds, a rifle with a detachable magazine has the potential and that's all that matters.

    Moreover...
The (D) candidates will all support this; the rejection of the issue will mean close races will go to the (R) candidate.

It basically bans any long gun that will accept a magazine.

This one is going to be DOA, Broward cannot steal enough votes to pull this one off.

They claim to be a group made up of victims and survivors of assault weapon attacks, but that's another anti-gun lie, the LLC filing tells a different story, one of the two members of the LLC is a registered Florida lobbyist and the other a retired Colorado Senator and neither one is a victim of assault weapon violence

    http://search.sunbiz.org/Inquiry/CorporationSearch/SearchResultDetail?inquirytype=EntityName&directionType=Initial&searchNameOrder=BANASSAULTWEAPONSNOW L180002442840&aggregateId=flal-l18000244284-cc78fd48-6c87-4f56-814e-b48482ab4b34&searchTerm=Ban Assault Weapons Now&listNameOrder=BANASSAULTWEAPONSNOW L180002442840

But they have some heavy backing.

"The committee backing this proposal is Ban Assault Weapons Now, and they have raised $410,000 since March while also spending around $284,000. To get the measure on the 2020 ballot, Ban Assault Weapons Now would have to submit hundreds of thousands of valid petitions supporting the measure."

    https://floridianpress.com/2018/11/will-florida-ban-assault-weapons-in-2020/

Now it's time to find the source of their money.

This is already beginning to smell like the rot of N.E. Astro-Turf.

So what evidence do you have that this proposal would reduce mass shootings?

What evidence do you have that it won't?

You're the one with the claim. So it's up to you to provide evidence to it's effectiveness.

Every mass shooting committed in any state where such firearm-related restrictions already exist. Especially when the firearm purchased was sold in such a state to begin with.
