    MOD WARNING - RULE 9

Although graphic images are a powerful tool for demonstrating the point that some pit bulls can be exceedingly dangerous, this moderation staff is asking your cooperation in limiting the unwarranted exposure to horrific images. Several images were deleted and several were retained based solely on my discretion. If you want the image to remain, please contain a link to the image and not the image itself. Thanks for your cooperation - Lee S

Unless you're in the military or law enforcement, I see no damn good reason a person should be able to own a pit bull.

Fact: Pit bulls make up only 6% of the dog population, but they're responsible for 68% of dog attacks and 52% of dog-related deaths since 1982.

They are the most aggressive and defensive breeds by nature, plus they're stronger than your average dog. They have historically been used for hunting, war, and, yes, fighting. The excuse of "bad owners" doesn't cut it - what ? Do you really believe that time after time after time it just happens to be the worst possible owners tend to buy pits ? Nonsense. The fact is, I've heard of too many cases where "mild mannered" pits attack other dogs when on the loose. Your argument is a dog that won't hunt.

Unlike an AR-15, have a mind of their own and can turn on even the owner. When I take my dog to the dog park or on a walk, the reason I'm always armed is because of pit bulls. I've had labs, collies, and other breeds run towards my vizsla, but the only time she literally almost jumped into my arms was when a pit bull approached her. Thankfully the owner called it back.

This is like saying because blacks and Latinos have high murder rates and use their guns for killing we should ban guns.

It's mostly blacks and Latinos mistreating their pitbulls and making them violent and getting backyard bred dogs with garbage genetics.

If you get a pitbull from a breeder with excellent verifiable genetics and a good temperament and you treat it right it's going to be a good dog and it's not going to harm anyone.

I could make the same argument why no one except those in the military or law enforcement should own a gun that is automatic. What? Are we going to ban and limit German Shepherds too to the military and law enforcement because they tend to be more territorial?

There are photos of police in the days of segregation using German Shepherds toward African American rioters. If the reason you are armed is because of a phobia regarding pit bull, I would recommend a therapist. I’ve worked with many breeds of dogs, both German Shepherds and Pit Bulls alike, and these Pit Bulls, with proper socialization, are no worse than other breeds. Pit Bulls have gotten their rep through the black market activity of dogfighting.

I love my pitty. She has some dog aggression but shows no aggression to humans and is taking well to training.

More big government intervention without justification.

Pitbulls should be banned in urban areas. They are wonderful dogs, very loyal and loving - except when some whatever sets them off. Often, with a child in this. A jury here recently convicted 2 people in the death of their daughter by a pitbull. I'm sure up until it was killing their daughter it was a wonderful dog. That is always the story of any pitbull attack. It was a wonderful pet until it ... and then trying to figure out what set it off, which changes nothing.
There are people who claim that leopards, tigers and lions make good pets too. For a while decades ago it was trendy for people to have pet leopards. But so many got mauled they were outawed nearly everywhere.

NOT a good sign. It is not rare for pitbull attacks to start with a conflict with another dog. The person of the other dog tries to intervene and the pitbull turns on the person - or child.

Which is why she doesn't encounter new dogs without a muzzle. This isn't rocket surgery.

I used to feel the same way, still do in some regard, BUT :) My Wife's good friend had a epileptic seizures and by the time she bounced back her boyfriends Pit had tore her ear off, chewed her nose up and ripped her scalp nasty like! Here the Hospital is required by law to report any and all dog attacks and to notify the City cops or county Deputies, which they did and the dog was put down..

So when the poster above states they are stupid, I must agree with that too!

And what makes you think the exact same thing couldn't have happened with any large breed? Anecdotes don't make for good policy. We hear the exact same just-so stories from anti-gun folks all the time.

I drove 125 miles in subzero weather to do a project for a guy and when I got there a part of his fifth wheel I needed to measure had a small 6X6 dog pen with 2 pits in it, WTF! I called the tool and he tells me, "They are harmless" and I replied that I was armed and was he totally sure there will be no conflict? He asked if I could come back next week, and I said sure, for an extra $250 to cover my drive and time that day, he agreed and he paid handsomely for that stupid bit of negligence!

More anecdotes. You do realize that most pits will never attack anyone in their entire lives, and that anecdotes like this are a poor substitute for rationalism?

I can't, but it did happen in this case.. I personally only own Labs, they love everyone and are by nature social around other working dogs! Never seen one of mine or the guys we hunt with in a fight and sometimes we have 3-4 dogs working! Even when one of the dog has the kill in his mouth the others pay no attention and head back on command!

No. BAD DOG OWNERS should be drawn and quartered instead. Pit bulls are no different than a chihuahua. Treat it badly, train it badly, you get a bad dog.

So you're saying you would have gotten on your knees in a kennel with two strange pits and maybe on your back measuring out in the middle of nowhere, ya right, I'm starting to smell fish here :)

With that said...I would not own a pit bull and am nervous around them. They can sense this, so I keep my distance. A shame, that. I love dogs. But prefer labs, myself. Although I used to own dobermans.

I'm not saying it didn't happen. I'm saying it doesn't matter when it comes to establishing any sort of law. It isn't like Labs have never attacked anyone before. If someone in this forum come forward with such a story about Labs, does that mean we should ban the breed and have the government come euthanize your puppers? No, of course not.

And I smell one of the most poorly-constructed straw men I've ever witnessed in this forum. Care to actually address anything I said or is the straw man too appetizing?

Same reason I don't mess with horses. I'm nervous around them, which makes them nervous around me. Not bad instincts at all, just good self-knowledge.
