    The Turkish government is not only vicious, but highly deceitful, so I don't know if the protestors will achieve anything. For instance the authorities reported that a dozen people were injured, while witnesses say quite a few dozens were injured and that the ambulances were going back and forth to the hospital. There are protests also in Ankara, so it has become an ideological battle against the policies and lies of the Erdogan government. The following is from Hurriyet:

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    The heart of Istanbul's entertainment area had turned into a battlefield during the late hours of May 31, as security forces staged a merciless crackdown on peaceful protesters who were gathered to denounce the brutal dawn raid against demonstrators occupying Gezi Park.

    Major connections leading to Taksim - Sıraselviler, Tarlabaşı, Harbiye and Beşiktaş - as well as İstiklal Avenue were all blocked by the riot police, who fired tear gas without making any distinction between protesters and locals. Two choppers were also circling the skies in the area, while ambulances continuously brought new patients to the hospitals. Dozens of protestors were reported injured by witnesses. Several hotels around the Taksim area provided support to the injured or those who suffered respiratory problems due to tear gas.

    Some residents in the area banged pots and pans from their homes to protest the government over the crackdown and express support for the protesters in the streets.

    This is a translation of what's going on in Istanbul from a foreign newspaper:

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Apart from the police who made use of live ammunition, the Turkish government has snipers posted around Taksim Square shooting at the protesters.

    "Everyone knows the press in Turkey is not working. The people are dying in the streets? Turkey suffers, "wrote the tweet of the Hollywood star Bruce Willis, inviting followers to reproduce the news.

    And here's another article translated from a foreign source:

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Four dead and hundreds (at least 400) is injured in the bloody incidents that took place during the night in Turkey, especially in the streets of Istanbul and other cities.

    Amidst a newspaper and TV ban by the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish police violently removed the protesters from the Park Geza, the famous Taksim Square who were protesting government plans to bulldoze the park.

    After four days spent in the park, the police intervened, using excessive force. This angered residents not only of Istanbul and other Turkish cities, which came out in their thousands to the streets.

    The result was four dead, and more than 400 injured, five of them hospitalized in critical condition at the time of this writing. Information reported that the police have used real bullets against protesters, while snipers at various points around the Taksim Square, opened fire on the crowd

    According to converging information from independent media, eyewitnesses and hospital sources, ten protesters had brain injuries, while three others were blinded by the violent blows of repressive forces in Taksim Square.

    The information is transmitted with caution, as there was no official update since the Turkish government banned the media from conveying anything about episodes. As was natural, social media like Twitter and Facebook sent out information and pictures, revealing the size of the police brutality.

    great.. I'm going to Istanbul in a year. My turkish friends didn't give a too positive description of the turkish government, and I heared on the radio that tourists had to flee to avoid tear gas. I hope that (*)(*)(*)(*) is all gone by the time I get there or i'm gonna get pissed off. And please let the arab squabble stay within the arab world atleast a year and a half more!

    No, same kind of revolutionary politics that has caused the same in many people in many countries, that is resistance and fear as well (that was the Arab spring really, a revolt to 'autumn', not to 'spring', revolutions on the streets do not lead to liberty, politics neither) This is revolutionary, because it leads to this kind of demonstrations and clashes and to political change, means further organization of large number of people. The municipal/system always sends in many police dressed in dark uniforms to increase the amount of fear (black does the maximum psychological effect, is more intimidating), thus more resistance/battle in the angry crowds, again revolutionary)
    Over the next months you can expect more of the same somewhere in the world (another big demonstration, another revolt, another radical political change, etc)

    I wondered about this. Usually when a 'dictator' has problems, and that's what Erdogan is, they start a war. Turkey has been provoking Greece quite a bit lately and Greece has been forced not to react knowing Ankara wants an excuse to attack. I read that the police used tear gas against a Greek and Armenian school, even though they were far from the protests. Also the Greek consulates warned Greek tourists and Greeks living in Istanbul to keep out of sight.

    I did see a picture of a man all bloodied and people near by said there have been sniper attacks by the police. No doubt Erdogan is going to blame the Greeks for his own self serving reasons. One newspaper published a map with half the Aegean islands, parts of northern Greece, Cyprus and Crete as part of Turkey. Seems the more the EU and others say that Turkey has no rights in Greek territorial waters, the more aggressive Turkey becomes.

    Anyway, Turkey does have a lot of enemies and I wonder if any of them encouraged the protests? Could it be the Iranians, the Kurds, the Russians, Hezbollah or Israel? Hmmm! :hmm:

    My grandson has schools friends in Istanbul and he loves it, and my daughter is dying to go there...but it seems Turkeys economic boom has gone to the heads of the magalomaniacs; Erdogan and Devotoglu. They have dreams of restoring the Ottoman Empire, and can't stop instigating friction in the neighboring countries. Well it's backfiring now, as Assad said it would. :steamed:
