I remember a huge palm thatch at a bar in tampa, peak of the roof was around 80 ft tall. Seminole indians made chickees, perfect for living in swamps.
Maybe it's an unproductive side effect of spending a lot of time online arguing the toss with other belligerent people.
Car parking should be free. We have several large shopping centres in my area. The one with the free parking is very popular but it is owned by a different company from the one surrounded by council owned parking.
Were the Seminole people semi-nomadic? It looks like a good solution to seasonal migrations as you wouldn't have to carry construction materials around with you.
Well there's no such thing as free, maintenance would come out of the local purse and it could even be sold and redeveloped in a round of cuts to the budget if it wasn't at least self supporting. I don't think £1.20 is unreasonable for the convenience of being 100 yds from the high street.. Another problem is that it would be filled by commuters who would leave their cars parked all day and shoppers would be put off coming into the town centre. Online shopping is already damaging the high street.
The Seminoles were made up of several tribes, they retreated into the South Florida everglades, during the indian wars. They never surrendered to the US Gov and are, to this day, technically still in a state of war with the US Gov.
Yep, parking is a problem for shopping strips. A multi level car park was proposed for our station but hasn’t been built yet.
More on the Seminole wars. Where I grew up, in central Fl, I lived across the street from what could only been, a large camp for a long time. Even as a boy, i collected arrowheads and pottery shards and various artifacts, the ground was constantly, yielding up more artifacts. One day, archeologist from the University of Florida, came in and gridded it off and dug every inch up. In both my closest little market towns they let you park for free for the first hour. I think that's a fair compromise. I only had to drive to Lowestoft because in both Bungay and Halesworth my bank has closed down its branches.
Banks! They are closing all over the place. Many small towns have been left without a bank because of restructuring, etc. If there’s a post office in the town it is an agency for the Commonwealth bank but sometimes there’s no post office.
Our post offices have moved into shops. The nearest two are in a newsagent and a hardware store. Luckily I can pay money into my bank at the post office and they get a fee from the bank for transactions so the banks closing has actually been good for the post offices. Village post offices, shops and pubs have almost completely disappeared though.
Actually you did the right thing IMO. I live in a semi rural area and I was heading home when I turned off the main highway and onto a back road that is a shortcut to where I live. There was an out of town car stopped on the other side of the road so I pulled up alongside it to see if they needed any help. The driver started yelling at me for running over a tortoise that I had not seen because his vehicle had distracted me from looking at the road. He accused me of speeding and not looking where I was going. I have rescued more tortoises, and other creatures, out of roads than I can recall. Every time I do it I put on my emergency flashers and park in a manner that protects the small creature while I am rescuing it. Other drivers see my flashers are on and that I am in the road and automatically slow down. So instead of responding I just drove off because I refuse to defend myself to irrational fools that don't have a clue what they are doing. Yes, it was galling to be unfairly accused but considering the source it was not worth wasting my time and energy. Had the situation been reversed the tortoise would have survived. Since that time I have rescued a couple more tortoises since they are quite common around here. There is a saying that when you get into an argument with a fool that the fool always wins. Just not worth lowering yourself to their level IMO.
Rescuing turtles is great karma. I ride a bicycle very often. Shortly after rescuing 2 turtles, i found 2,867$ money, tossed out, about 6 years ago. Turtles are featured in many creation, accounts.
Then there is the greatest of all turtles, A Tuin, carrying the entire Discworld through space and time.
I'm now being accused of virtue signalling to the guy who offered me the ticket as if he wasn't virtue signalling when he bibbed his horn waving a ticket out of the window or the bystander wasn't virtue signalling his support for the first virtue signaller. I'd do it again but maybe next time I would start by pointing out the surveillance cameras watching the car park in order to let him know I was acting on his behalf as well as mine. The car park is right next to a council building containing, amongst others, the transport department. There is every chance that a council worker could have been watching or that I could have been one myself. It had crossed his mind that I could have been a copper by the time he left.
Hopefully you did the right thing and handed it in to the local police station in case it had been reported missing? I jest but (true strory) in my first ever job I lost the weekend's takings off the rack on my motorbike on the way to the bank to pay it in. It was over £700 back in the mid 80's. You have no idea how grateful I was to find out two young kids had handed it in to the local police station by the time I'd been sent there by my pissed off boss. I went around to their house and thanked them and their beaming with pride parents. I also gave them a tenner each which was a reasonable chunk of my £90 a week wages but has felt too little since.
The parents did tell me that the boys had considered keeping it but figured they couldn't spend that amount of money without attracting suspicion.
OK, I think it's time to admit I've got a problem. I'm seriously addicted to watching these videos. It's taking up valuable time that I should be spending being self-righteous on internet forums. Is there a helpline for this?
