"It is equally important to focus on factory farming, says Bath University evolutionary biologist Sam Sheppard, whose research suggests that large animal farms create the perfect conditions for bacteria and other pathogens to spread between animals and humans, increasing the risk of potentially lethal “superbug” infections such as E coli, salmonella and campylobacter.

“Pandemics are like terrorist attacks,” he says. “We know roughly where they originate and what’s responsible for them, but we don’t know exactly when the next one will happen. They need to be handled the same way – by identifying all possible sources and dismantling those before the next pandemic strikes.”

Redding and a team of disease ecologists from University College London (UCL) have built a computer model encompassing environmental disturbance and social change such as deforestation and urban expansion, the movement of host animals, expected climate change, temperature, rainfall, types of habitat, even transport links. It has accurately predicted where the last three outbreaks would emerge, though not their timing.

Under Barack Obama, Carroll ran the US government’s Predict programme, which aimed to be an early warning system. By the time Trump closed it down in 2019, a recurring theme in this field, Predict had worked with virus hunters, universities, conservationists and natural history museums to collect more than 2m mucus and saliva samples from thousands of bird and mammal species."

Doesn't mother nature need a way to kill off the human animals that are destroying the planet? ;)

That's a drastic way to treat Republicans.

    But if you insist...

Did you ever notice that almost everything Republicans want to do winds up with more people dead?

    I just ask.

Shutting down Predict was just plain profoundly stupid.

Another early move was that Obama had put out a call for bids on creating n95 masks in emergenc response situations near the end of his term. A bid came in from a company that would have refurbished a machine that can create a million masks per day - something that required government help, as it wasn't an economically viable business venture

Trump shut it down. The result was that US medical personell and other first responders were left with far less protection than they needed. Did that contribute to the large number of deaths we've had among health care workers? Undoubtedly.

In so many ways we made COVID worse for Americans.

We have about 4% of the world population and about 25% of the deaths. There is no justification for our failed response - a failure that continues today.

That falls on the American people. They've had the information to protect themselves. I would rather their be more deaths and less restrictions than more restrictions and less deaths. Liberty is more important than saving lives.

Americans have had the leaderhip that has STATED REPEATEDLY that medical experts don't know JACK.

They have been told to ignore COVID. They have been told it is a Democratic plot against the president (by multiple folks at Fox, by Rushbo, by Brightbart). They have been told masks and distancing are pointless. They have been told that medical recommendations are a political power play. They were told that it would magically go away. They were told that our best experts are liars. They were told that the president knows more about remedies than the best medical experts in the entire world. They were told that the white house is insisting on looking into drinking bleach.

Then, YOU come along and suggest that nobody should be listening to our leaders???

    WTF???

Haha, I didn’t say that. I said it should be their choice to decide what they do, and that they should not be forced to do anything. Liberty first, safety second.

No, back here on earth, in their next incarnation. When people die, their soul has learned the lesson it was meant to learn in this life, and it is time for them to move on to the next. Sorry, I don't see death as a bad thing, but part of evolution.

We have a lot of laws that exist due to public safety concerns.

I'm just curious how far your "I get to do anything I want" thing should go.

Should I get to decide how fast I drive in a school zone?.

Should I get to decide how much high explosives I keep on hand without any justication?

As it happens, there isn't any approach to COVID19 outside of limits on behavior and continued medical science on remedies and vaccines.

Those do not work without nattion wide cooperation that is NOT going to happen - especially when our leaders, such as Trump, constantly proclaim medicalscience to be worthless garbage.

I think things are fine how they are. Around here, you wear a mask if you want, and don’t if you don’t want to. People voluntarily keep there distance. There are not any fines for not wearing a mask. I wear one personally, but it is my choice to. I am not mandated to. As it should be.

I havnt heard Trump say medical science is worthless garbage. I hear a lot of people on the left making up stuff he says though, and calling it gospel.

Trump has claimed remedies that medical science has absolutely opposed.

Trump has led this nation to NOT wear masks and to NOT social distance agaist the advice of medical science here in the US and around the world.

Trump has made claims about "herd immunity" and immunity following illness which are counter to medical science.

Trump has made claims about COVID going away at multiple times throughout this pandemic. Those have been absolutely opposed by medical science.

Trump has made claims about vaccines and their availability that are not supported by medical science. These include statements concerning overriding measures put in place to ensure that mass innoculation of citizens is safe.

Trump has made claims about vaccine availability that do not comport with the fact that making tens of millions of vaccines available is not something that can be done at present. For just one example, some candidates require SUPER cold storage up to the time of injection - something that is simply not available at scale. Trump's statements on this subject are counter to medical science.

Trump has caused false information to be written into CDC briefs, undermining medical science and bringing doubt to the trustability of our only methods of finding truthful medical science information.

Trump has directly charged statements by medical science as being false.

Trump coopted the medical science briefings on COVID to be used for MONTHS by HIMSELF to give the nation information that was explicitly opposed by medical science - touting remedies produced by companies owned by political donors, dangerous ideas such as household cleaner injections, etc.

Trump's administration has worked to SLOW testing (which medical science has pointed to as something that must be increased by HUGE amounts).

Trump's administration has prevented or slowed testing and progress information from reaching the public - as well as being LESS available to the CDC - our top of the line experts on contagious disease.

Trump has directly stated that medical science is garbage and has acted on that belief throughout the entire period of this pademic.

The doctor reporting on Trump's COVID is a BONE DOCTOR - NOT a doctor with communicable disease or COVID expertise. As such, we are NOT getting the answers to the questions that medical science is asking concerning such important factors as risks to his mental state, his full prognosis, his likely communicability, etc.

===> His every act has been to ATTACK medical science and to DENY medical science the information and communication channels that are the only way for medical science to communicate with the American people.

No, he said quite specifically on many occasions he supports medical science and has said wearing masks is a good thing. What he is against is shutting down the country like the left wants to do. The left’s cure is worse than the disease.

    This is just plain false.

Trump's leadership is that masks and social distacing are NOT necessary.

And, your claim tht the left wants to "shut dow the country" is absolute garbage Nobody wants to shut down the country.

Medical science (in the form of the CDC, administration officials and business executives) came together to form the plan for OPENING America that is sitting on whitehouse.gov.

There is NO opposition to opening America following the guidelines spelled out in that plan. And, it is something tht America is fully capable of doing, should we decide to do so - as long as the federl level of government supports it.

It is TRUMP who opposes that plan. In fact, he so opposes that plan that he works AGAINST the testing capacity to carry out that opening.

And, it is the right wing GOP crazies who have no plan - and that includes Trump who simply punts

Where I am at we ARE open, and everything is running smoothly. Governors are responsible for their own states.

you a. Just making stuff up about what Trump says. Or actually, you are just parroting what the left says Trump says. Not that it really matters. Anyone who looks to politicians for leadership is a lost cause anyway. But Trump has been very clear he supports masks and social distancing.
