Prominent lawyer Sidney Powell defends self against a $2.5 billion Smartmatic defamation lawsuit I don't know if it was a good idea for her to represent herself in this case. Something about a lawyer representing themselves has a fool for a client. Time will tell how this pans out and what to expect with the Giuliani and Lindell defamation suits. What do you think?
Normally, the reason you don't want to represent yourself is that you lack a knowledge in the law, and well that can obviously trip you up in the court room. Regardless of what one thinks of Powell, she's obviously a lawyer and therefore can comport herself just fine. Does that mean she'd win? Of course not, but she can handle herself in a court room just fine.
One of my undergrad law professors said it's because one cannot remain objective when representing themselves. They are too close to the case. It's the same reason that detectives aren't assigned to murder cases where they know the victim personally.
