Push is on to have ex-FBI chief Comey disbarred after Clinton scandal


A crusading lawyer filed a bar grievance this week accusing former FBI Director James Comey of lying to Congress and destroying potential evidence in the Clinton email scandal, in a process that could end up costing him his law license.

Ty Clevenger filed the grievance in New York, where Mr. Comey was a former U.S. attorney and is licenses to practice law.

Mr. Clevenger said Mr. Comey’s testimony to Congress that he did not predetermine the outcome of the FBI’s probe into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is belied by revelations this week that he in fact started drafting an exoneration months before even speaking with Mrs. Clinton.

“Insofar as Mr. Comey gave materially false testimony to Congress, it appears that he violated Rules 1.0(w), 3.3(a)(1), and 8.4 of the New York Rules of Professional Conduct,” Mr. Clevenger wrote.

He also asked to renew grievances in New York against former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, saying Mr. Comey’s claim that she tried to pressure him to downplay the Clinton probe should subject her to scrutiny.

The state grievance committee had deferred an investigation in January, saying there were ongoing probes by Congress and they would await the outcome.

Firm behind Trump dossier won't comply with House Intel subpoena

The research firm that produced the controversial dossier containing unverified allegations about President Trump and Russia will reportedly not comply with the House Intelligence Committee's subpoena to testify.

Fusion GPS plans to decline the request of the committee's chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), to testify before the panel by invoking constitutional privileges, according to a letter obtained by Business Insider on Monday.

"We cannot in good conscience do anything but advise our clients to stand on their constitutional privileges, the attorney work product doctrine and contractual obligations," Fusion GPS's counsel Josh Levy wrote in the letter.

The attorney said the subpoenas would violate "the First Amendment rights" of the firm's three founders, while also saying it would thwart future candidates who are running for public office "from conducting confidential opposition research in an election."

"Should you compel any of our three clients to appear at the scheduled deposition, they will invoke their constitutional privileges not to testify," Levy said in the letter, according to the report. "Since that will be the case, we ask that the Committee excuse them from appearing."

Nunes reportedly issued the subpoenas on Oct. 4, asking for materials and testimony on the opposition research from Fusion GPS sometime later this month or early in November.

The sign-offs come after the California lawmaker took a step back from leading the panel's inquiry into Russia's meddling in last year's presidential campaign after an ethics investigation began to look into his handling of the probe when it appeared he was coordinating with the White House.

Trump and his campaign claim that Clinton “gave” or “handed over” 20 percent of American uranium rights to the Russians. Through the Uranium One deal, the Russian state-owned nuclear energy company does now have control over 20 percent of U.S. uranium extraction capacity. But it cannot export the uranium.

In 2010, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States approved the sale of the majority of the shares to the Russians. The State Department was one of nine agencies on the committee that approved the deal. The deal was also separately approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

There is no evidence Clinton herself got involved in the deal personally, and it is highly questionable that this deal even rose to the level of the secretary of state. Theoretically, as Schweizer says, Clinton could have intervened. But even then, it ultimately would have been Obama’s decision whether to suspend or block the deal.

We wavered between Three and Four Pinocchios. Trump so often uses broad-brushed language that pushes him into Four Pinocchio territory, and this is yet another one of those cases. He specifically names Hillary Clinton as the active agent in the Uranium One deal, saying she “gave them” or “handed over” uranium to the Russians, but that is not the case. Then, he further claimed the sale went forward in exchange “for a big payment.” There’s no evidence for that claim either.
