Well, at the age of 96 the longest reigning monarch in England has died.

So everybody get used to saying King Charles III.

He may choose a different name.

If she had lived 4 more years she would have gotten a letter from the Queen.

I wonder if the official code for the Queen's death 'London Bridge is Down' was used:

    It likely was.

That was the system put in place for how her death would be announced and the plans already in place to be enacted.

Odds are, she likely died an hour or more before the announcement. That gave them time to start the preparations for the announcement and what happens afterwards. Informing the Prime Minister, preparing the government for the secession, and things like that.

It was not unexpected. She had seen many changes, and represented her family well.

And in another few decades, many here can tell their kids what it was like in "Elizabethan Times".

She was a woman of great consequence and a focus for national unity for the citizens of the UK. We Americans would have been lucky to have had such a focus which we need desperately. God save the King.

Though I'm not a Brit, I am touched by sadness at the Queens passing. Condolences to our friend and ally, the United Kingdom for their poignant loss.

This is a really big deal. All of the regalia of nobility will be on display.
Even though we aren’t English, we would have not had a free country without them.

Far too few people use her dignity, gravitas and full honesty as a model for their own behaviour.
    I know which I'll remember.

Very sad news. She was absolutely the bedrock of their Monarchy. Hopefully Charles will make her proud, but that seems unlikely to me. More simply I hope that he succeeds in not being an embarrassment. Seems like he might be able to do that much.

I have never known a day without this queen. And while I am not a Brit, her passing has an impact that I hadn't expected that it would.

A funeral, a coronation, an investiture, A lot of change for a nation that abhors change..

I never paid much attention to her in life, but watching the coverage now, she really seems to have been an extraordinary person and monarch.

When I found out about this, I must say this I was shocked that she had passed away. It's God's will when it is your time, and it certainly was her time. R.I.P. Queen Elizabeth II

Constitutionally the Monarchy has the potential, indeed the purpose, to protect the state somewhat from political tyranny.
Apart from Politicians swearing allegiance to the Monarch, if push came to shove in terms of government technically it is not the prime Minister who is in charge of it all.
The Monarch is the head of the Church for what that's worth, but more tellingly the Monarch is the head of the Judiciary and the Armed forces.
Soldiers, Sailors, Airman and the like swear an oath to the Monarch not the Prime Minister.
Unlikely, but if a Prime Minister ordered something like a military take over, or an invasion of Scotland or whatever, it is in the power of the Military at the behest of the Monarch to simply refuse.
I think constitutionally the present Monarch provides something of a buffer, some sort of Protection.

Incidentally the name is spelled incorrectly in the thread title.
