Winner: Dogs! Runner Up: Cats! (click for detailed results) Ranked Vote: Discussion Thread ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Folks! Time to give a node to our furry companions. And I know its not good to pick favorites, but this week...we're going to be picking favorites. Pets! This vote is part of a series of Ranked votes I'm setting up to test out just how alternative voting methods like Instant Runoff and Ranked Pairs stack up against your standard Plurality Vote. For more info check out these two discussion threads (but be warned, its a bit of a read): What To Do To Reduce Partisan Dysfunction In Politics Solutions Oriented Approach to Restoring Meaningful Civil Discourse The process for this Ranked vote will go as follows: Today, I'm asking you guys to submit nominations for what you think is the best to own. You can nominate any pet you want. Can be a broad category of pet, or a very specific bread, doesn't matter. This nomination phase will last till the end of today (4/20)(4/26), after which I'll assign letters to each of the nominated options, and then begins the voting phase. So make sure to get those nominations in quickly! Once the voting phase begins and I've assigned the letters, voting will run through next Friday (5/4). For this particular vote, in addition to calculating Ranked and Plurality winners, I'll also be setting up a separate tally using the Approval vote method. To cast a vote here, post the letters of the your picks in order of preference as normal. Example: A, B, C. But also be sure to cast a vote for the approval tally at the top of the page once the voting begins. In other words, to fully participate in this vote you'll have to vote in two places. Once to specify your order of preference, and once to specify which pets you approve of owning. Once again, I'll give us a head start by adding in the standard stuff. Dog, cat, fish. But remember, if there's a specific breed of something you think is better than the rest, please feel free to suggest it, and I'll make sure to add it to the list alongside the broader grouping. Oh, and in honor of today being 4/20, the bonus option will be....Alolan Weedle. Enjoy. What is the Best Pet to Own?: A. Dog B. Cat C. Fish #. Alolan Weedle D. Female Black Labrador E. Female Mini Daschund F. Labrador Retriever G. Golden Retriever H. Retriever I. Beagle J. Cockatoo K. Wombat L. Pomeranian M. Maine Coon Norwegian Forest Cat N. MalShi O. Maltese P. Bird Q. Hamster R. Herding Dog S. Snake T. Tarantula Winner: Dogs! Runner Up: Cats! (click for detailed results) -Meta
Hey folks! Since I haven't been paying attention to things lately, I'm going to go ahead and extend the Nomination phase for this for one more day. Nomination phase will now last through 4/26. I'll also push the voting deadline out to next Friday (5/4). -Meta
Cockatoo!! Or a Wombat Saw the most amazing Cockatoo today - he just went wild dancing as I whistled and then walked over to me for me to scratch his head. Lovely bird!! The only problem is that they are NOISY but so friendly and truly interactive with you. And can be the best source of entertainment. We had a pink and grey Galah at the same time we had a black Doberman (dont ask dumbest dog on the planet). The Galah would do an nonchalant walk around the dog assessing how asleep it was and when he had determined the dog was truly asleep would dart in bite it on the bum and then go back to pretending innocence. Meanwhile the dog would levitate stratight up into the air and come back down looking completely puzzled at this parrot doing the "I'm innocent" walk
Lhasa Apso? I know two people with similar dogs, and yeah, they are pretty cute. And friendly too...for the most part. One of my friends owned like 2-3 of them back in the day. The first one he owned was like my best friend. So...my friend's dog was my best friend. Weird right? But my coworker has something like it too, they tell me theirs is actually a Mutt though. And we don't get along quite as well. I mean...the dog finally warmed up a little to me after some time. Sort of, but... well, if anyone ever asks you if its possible for a dog to be snooty....the answer is yes. My coworker's dog is snooty and a coward and a picky eater to boot. Its really more like a small cat actually. My coworker also has a cat speaking a which, the cat is more dog-like than the dog is. Lol, OK rant over. Oh, and coworker, if you're read this, don't tell your dog what I said about him. Lol! -Meta
The pic was taken 10 minutes after her groomer left, she's actually a MalShi, Maltese x Shih Tzu. She is a picky eater, she will only eat if she sits on my lap and beg for snacks frequently which she rarely eats but stashes in her bed (outside, she sleeps outside has two beds to choose from lol) lol @friendsdogbestfriend, but yeah, I do get it, I love dogs. I also baby sit an ex guide dog for an elderly couple who travel overseas a couple of times a year, a golden retriever. He's a real baby because he was obviously bred to be with humans, not dogs, so need someone with him almost all the time or he gets sick, also needs a snack every couple of hours... he's on a strict diet so he eats carrots etc. I've become very attached to him, he's very polite, will stop and allow me to walk first on narrow paths etc...beautiful dog dammit I just burnt the carrots gtg
Sorry to be a wet blanket on a roaring fire but it's actually pronounced "sheet-su". https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/shih tzu https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/shih-tzu And BTW, it looks nothing like a Villano de Las Encartaciones (don't you appreciate the name "Shih Tzu" now?)
BTW, I nominated Retrievers (in general) as well as Labrador Retrievers (in general) and Golden Retrievers (also in general) ....and Beagles (so fun) -Meta
For small kids, I think a rabbit is the best. For apartment dwellers, a cat is the best. For home owners, a dog is critical and necessary and therefore the best. My personal favorite dog is the Chihuahua. Very loud, always alert, and hard to hit with a bullet.
Birds are popular too. I had two African green pigmy parrots aka Lovebirds. They don't really love they fight and bite though. Parrot bites hurt. Long story short, they got out of their cage one day (super smart creatures as well as very beautiful) and waited by the door until I got home then flew out !! Escape from Alcatraz !!
If you want your home to sound like a jungle then a bird is perfect. They sing in the mornings and evenings. And during the day they squawk. Birds sleep at night same as people, so the house becomes quiet again after dark. Birds sleep funny -- they stand on one leg and they tuck their head under one wing.
Here's some more nominations to fill out the list. We need more variety, currently list is oversaturated with different kinds of dogs. Lol. Spider Tarantula Orb Weaver Snake Python Boa Lizard Iguana Gecko Turtle Box Turtle Snapping Turtle Coy Fish Crab Leopard Ferret Pig Mouse Rat Hamster
Cat. That is all. Everything else must be caged or 'broken' in some way. Cats are the only pet that can live up to their full natural potential in the average domestic environment and not be stifled by that environment. As long as it gets to go outside frequently, of course.
