    Ranked Vote: Discussion Thread

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oops, sorry, a little late setting this vote up.
But that's OK, I was way early setting the last one up, so it balances out. ;)

Um what?... How did that picture get in there? Lol!
OK, so the actual subject of this thread isn't super-fly jumping spiders, its Back-room Dealing in politics, and what to do about it/what to do to reduce its negative effects on our democracy assuming that it can't be completely eliminated.

For anyone new to the Ranked Vote series,
this thread is basically part of a group of threads geared towards taking important issues (like Back-room Dealing), coming up with a broad range of potential solutions to them, and voting on which of those solutions are the best, using ranked methods for tallying the votes:
Ranked Vote: Discussion Thread (includes schedule)
What To Do To Reduce Partisan Dysfunction In Politics
Solutions Oriented Approach to Restoring Meaningful Civil Discourse

The original discussion thread on Back-room Dealing is located here:
    http://www.politicalforum.com/index...to-stop-back-room-dealing-in-politics.537071/

Below is the current list of suggested solutions. Again, starting off with a pretty decent list, but as always please feel free to suggest additional ideas throughout the nomination phase which will run through to the end of today (8/4).

What To Do To Stop Back-room Dealing In Politics?:

Again, the nomination phase here will run until the end of today. If you think there's something which should be added to the list prior to the vote, please post it in this thread before then.

Once the voting phase begins, voting will run through Friday (8/17).

To participate in this vote, simply follow the following three steps:

    1. If you have an idea which isn't in the list, post it in the thread between now through the end of today.
    2. Wait for me to edit the above list of options. The ?? s will be replaced with lettered labels by (8/5).
    3. After letters have been added to the above options list,
cast your ballot by making a post with a list of those letters sorted in your order of preference.

(you don't have to include them all, but including more gives your vote more chance to have an impact)
    B, C, D, F, H, M

    C. Unemployment and Underemployment in General
    D. Partisan Dysfunction in Congress

Force politicians and candidates to use government provided email and phone for ALL government related communication. Heavy fines and penalties if found using other private means.

Why do you assume back room dealing is a negative thing?

I haven't seen any evidence of that in either this or the original thread.

Just the assumption that it is bad.

Perhaps politicians can get better deals for their constituents if everything isn't made public.

In fact, I would argue that most of the negotiations between our government officials are done in secret, simply so they can talk freely without the press taking things out of context.

What would Pelosi's district think of her if she were openly talking options with a leader of the republicans?

They would call her a traitor and probably not vote for her again but its how the work gets done.

It doesn't have to mean that anything nefarious is going on.

Being a politician requires a certain amount of concern for image, after all, they need that image to get elected so yes, it is important.

Here would be a typical example.

A democrat asks a republican for support on their bill, the republican says fine but I have a bill in committee that you are on and would like you to vote to send it to the floor.

The back room deal is done and will please the constituents of each of their districts in the end.

What ultimately matters are results, not how those results were necessarily achieved.

Remember, to vote, just list the options/their labels out in your order of preference,...
You don't have to rank them all, but the more options ranked, the more chances your ballot has to impact the final results.
To vote for anything not on the list, just add it into your rankings list as a "write-in".
See example ballot below for reference on formatting:

I can definitely see your points, but I think people just want to have a better idea of what their elected representatives are up to behind the scenes on their behalf. They want to know that the politicians have their backs and aren't secretly stabbing them in the back. But there's a perception out there in the country that politicians aren't trustworthy. I think that's why the issue of back-room dealing was generally ranked relatively high in the top national issues vote a while back such that it tied for first place alongside immigration.

Lets say Republicans keep power. If NOT for the back room deals your party dies.

I think you are confusing backroom deals with bipartisanship.

Alright, if no one else wants to vote then here are the results,
    [IMG]
    And the winner is!....

    K. Grant Power to Expel Congress Members for Ethics Violations to
Congressional Oversight Panel of Rotating Ordinary Citizen

Tying for second place are E. Get Rid of Overturn or Supersede the Citizens United Decision and &. Repeal 17th Amendment/Elect Senators Via State Legislatures. It should be noted that this time around the Plurality method was wholly incapable of selecting a winner ;). But unfortunately, due to the low number of voters and the way the votes broke down in the end Instant Runoff wasn't any better than Plurality :( with each of us voting for a different number one option leading to a 4-way stalemate in both cases. Luckily Ranked Pairs was there to save the day and determine a victor :), even if only by the skin of its teethe. There were no Condorcet winners this time around, making this vote perhaps the most uncomfortably close vote so far that didn't end up in an overall tie for first in the end. But with only four votes, I guess that's to be expected. Was hoping that someone would come along to cast a fifth 'tie-breaking' vote to create a Condorcet winner and make the IRO results more interesting, but O well.

Results (Ranked Pairs - Plurality - Instant Runoff):
