I just woke up from a dream, a variant of which I've been having for about 37 years.

I went into an auditorium to take a professional license exam, one that I literally needed to make a living, and which is offered only once a year.

I got there early, but the examinees kept jumping ahead of me in line. When I finally got up to the front, the proctor told me to get my exam packet from a big box on a table near the entrance and to go on in. Of course it wasn't there. I kept looking through the box and it just wasn't there. I knew I had somehow screwed up the registration process. Some guy nearby made a lame joke and I threatened him with violence. He apologized and then I felt worse.

It's the second "late to the party" nightmare of this type that I've had in the last 10 days. You'd think I'd grow out of this at some point.

We never "grow out" of dreaming. It sounds like a pretty standard type of dream. Some recent stress, at work? Or, are you just reconsidering if you might not prefer doing something else?

Two nightmares like that, in ten days, if you'll forgive me, does not seem all that terrible. Ask any waiter, and they will probably confirm having often had the dream of having too many customers, and being unable to service them, due to a plethora of problems. I think I may have even had that dream, after I'd stopped waiting tables.
