Redding jumps to #4 in best economic small cities in America

Redding has seen sizable economic growth in recent years, and one national think-tank has taken notice.

The Milken Institute, an economic think-tank based in Santa Monica, has ranked Redding as the fourth-best economicsmall city in the country. Redding leaped up 59 slots from 63 in 2021 and now rests in the top-5, alongside 4 other non-California cities.

The Milken Institute releases these economic rankings every year. They split up American cities and their metropolitan areas into two tiers: large and small; a top both lists were metropolitans in Utah.

The core components for Milken's calculations are job creation, wage growth, output growth, and, starting this past year, the housing market. Of course, the pandemic has caused financial chaos nationwide, making this data even more unique.

According to the Shasta Economic Development Corporation (Shasta EDC), a big reason for Redding's rapid development was COVID.

"We added, from December 2019 to December of 2021, really the core of the pandemic, we added net new jobs," said Todd Jones, president of Shasta EDC. "[We were] the only MSA, the only area in the entire state of California, that was able to do that."…

This is great news. The local signs of growth are everywhere. It truly paid to defy the state and act like most other places on the list and stay open most of the pandemic. The only California city to make this list.

“it's time to keep the foot on the gas. "You got to continue the forward momentum that we're on. We have a lot of success right now. Obviously, looking at downtown, looking at air travel... businesses are continuing to grow still."

According to Jones, from March of 2021 to March of 2022, Redding saw almost a 20% increase in wage growth…..”

Redding is a far enough away from the bay area to be somewhat normal.. Been there many of times on my way north to Oregon and then south to San Jose..

    Nice place really..

That’s just it. They don’t. It’s far enough away from both that they won’t move here. We’ve actually become ever more conservative each year as people who move here are those escaping suburbs of those places who need or want to remain in Ca. Now we are attracting people with jobs based in those cities who now can work from home and take advantage of our schools, hospitals, parks, and slower lifestyle pace where car shows, rodeos, 4th of July, and Christmas are major city events.

Next time you come through here you should come into the new revitalized and transformed downtown area. Some really good restaurants there.

We’ve been working on fire breaks to the north and west since the Carr fire took out over 500 homes within the city limits in addition to 600 elsewhere. While the state still allows it, we have goats that work wonders now.

Never heard of Redding before so looked it up. Oh.

The chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in Redding is 1 in 32. Based on FBI crime data, Redding is not one of the safest communities in America. Relative to California, Redding has a crime rate that is higher than 85% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes.

The poverty rate in Redding is 18.9%. One out of every 5.3 residents of Redding lives in poverty. How many people in Redding, California live in poverty? 16,835 of 89,257 Redding residents reported income levels below the poverty line in the last year.

I suspect all is not as wonderful as it sounds. Without bothering to look up any statistics, I'd guess that people from other more expensive parts of the state are moving there.

There might be more jobs but that is because there are more people. Wages might be going up but so are housing costs in the area.

Redding has always been a real "backwater". In the Central Valley in the northern part of California it's far away from any navigable waterway and not many wanted to live there. It's colder than the rest of the Central Valley and the summers are dry, so it is not the optimal place for agriculture.

It can snow there but the summers still get very hot and dry.

As long as our area is known as openly red neck and the big events are old car shows like cool April nights week and rodeo week with line dancing, chili cook offs, revolver shooting contests, ten thousand plus show up for pan cake breakfast and a rodeo parade, and the other big events are the 4th of July and the Christmas parade/ garden of lights the urban elites will stay away except when they want us to serve them when they come up to use their houseboats.

Those numbers are old and no longer apply. The state contributes greatly to our problems by releasing Ex cons here far away from their old areas and our lower cost of living has attracted welfare recipients here where their state dollars go further. The numbers in the seed article show that our leaders were and are proactive in dealing with state caused problems. Also it’s why many of us want our own state up here or to join with Oregon counties and becoming part of Greater Idaho.

Our growth had been fast until the 2007 recession and Californication going off the deep end politically. Now it’s starting to resume . Not sure why the state still wants us to be a part of it as we turn more red in proportion to it turning more blue.

And yet people from far and wide visit us and fall in love with the area and move here loving the beauty of it and the surrounding area as well as the slower more laid back lifestyle here. The Central Valley does end here. The foothills to the Trinity Alps to the west, the cascades to the north and the sierras to the east begin here. We are the 2nd sunniest city in America and yet get an average of over 30” of rain fall in the wet season. Our area is known as Gods country. We do have lots of rivers, lakes, waterfalls, forests, mountains around here and the Sacramento River flows through the middle of town. We have Amtrak and Greyhound service to downtown, interstate 5 comes through here and we have a highway west to the coast at Eureka and east to Reno as well. Also an Airport with flights to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Burbank, Las Vegas, Seattle, and soon, Denver.

    Beautiful country here.

We are surrounded by so many things to do and there’s now plenty inside the city too.

And like the initial article said so much is happening here. If people are conservatives please move here. If not your tourism is always welcome.

2017 is. A lot of interventions, growth, and redevelopment have happened since then and a lot of prior actions were just beginning to be fully implemented at that point. The state of California and its criminal and prison/jail propositions are the single biggest impediment to our progress and growth. We can’t wait to be one of six Ca countries to become part of Greater Idaho. (Siskiyou, Modoc, Shasta, Lassen, Tehama, Plumas).

Black and white thinking does not apply well to concepts that are relative.

You know that is never going to happen, due to geography.

The entire Northern Californian coast is kind of Left, and Redding is connected to the rest of California through the Central Valley, and separated by a big mountains from the Northeast.

Of course Redding would probably choose to separate from the rest of California if a vote was taken in the city.

A few tens of thousands of more illegal aliens and Redding will be just like Bakersfield. You wouldn't be able to even get the votes in the city to leave.

Also, I think you're going to start seeing Progressive Leftists moving up to Redding because they can't afford to live in other parts of the state. It will start with teachers in the schools.

True. The key word in the linked article is jumped. Meaning a rather sudden and big movement.

The six counties I mentioned (Siskiyou, Modoc, Shasta, Lassen, Tehama, Plumas) are connected with southern and eastern Oregon counties that are themselves trying to leave Oregon and join Idaho. The Jefferson separation and new state is much larger and is the yellow in my avatar. Most of that is red except for Lake and Mendocino counties who feel our shared rural values trumped party. That effort is harder because it affects the senate while Greater Idaho doesn’t even affect the house other than two Oregon Republicans becoming Idaho Republicans. Less than 1/2 of one Of Ca’s 52 districts, a red one would leave and no members of congress. Most of those moving here are conservatives fleeing suburbs of the bay and LA areas but still need to be in Ca. for our slower lifestyle and great parks, schools, shopping, activities, and medical services, some who still work there but from home. We lured conservative work from home types from all over. We have lots of private, home, and charter schools here too.

Those coastal areas don't want to be part of your new state.

There are plenty of descendants of Hippies there, who moved out from the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 70s.
(Not to mention descendants of loggers, who will never be as conservative as you are)

Humboldt and Del Norte do not. Del Norte is slightly conservative but that state prison is too important to their economy. Mendocino does, nothing else on the coast is part of the discussion. Gold Beach up to Coos Bay would be Greater Idaho’s coast. My current preference is for Greater Idaho even over Jefferson though either would make me happy. As to Jefferson what you suggest could happen here with a blue take over is in Placer county at least in Roseville if not Rocklin, Lincoln, and Auburn. Also, Stanislaus county has a D majority but wants in Jefferson for its ag interests most likely and it’s eastern side.
