Just ordered Jimmy Johns for lunch. My office is directly across the street.

Due to a conference call, I ordered it for delivery with a $5 tip.

The delivery guy shows up 30 minutes after ordering. I buzz him up to suite 325. He proceeds instead to walk into the first floor office. So I chase him down, and he needs me to sign the receipt since I used a credit card. Does he have a pen? Nope.

I mean come on man. You are delivering a *******n sandwich, and you proceeded to screw up no less than 3 times. This is the kind of stuff worth $15 an hour?

    Give me a break.

Because working Jimmy Johns delivery service is a great career aspiration that shouldn't be squelched because they don't earn enough money to afford a car/phone/multiple tvs/a house/insurance/4+kids.

You can't judge someone for ONE encounter. Do you know his circumstances? Things in life happen all the time that can affect your work. You are just one of hundreds he's probably serviced. Your kind of thinking is disappointing. If you've had continuously poor service from this individual, I would understand.

That's why I over-tip. I worked in the industry a while ago and know how it feels.

Maybe he was tired from pulling an all-nighter studying for an exam to get his degree in engineering. You don't know.

But if he had a pen and went to the correct floor then he deserves $15 an hour correct? It taking 30 minutes isn't a screw up.

Because it is more comparable to the cost of living, keeps them from becoming government dependents and the average tax payer from having to supplement such disgusting wages, and, and this is a big and, because it is closer to what a low wage earner used to get in comparison to the cost of living. No where near what the value of a low wage employee received 40 years ago or more, but closer anyway.

But your hatred/discontent for the working peasants is noted none the less. At least he has a job that he needs government subsidies to survive on and he isn't just drawing full welfare benefits and living in mom and dad's basement.

Those peasants are the worse, even thought they have no wealth or power created a welfare system where they don't have to work and can mooch all they want off the government teet anyway. Am I right? [sarcasm off

Why not? My clients judge me by less than one encounter. Based on my education, experience.

Could you imagine if I showed up to a meeting for a new project and didn't bring any paper and asked to borrow some?

    Good lord.

    Stop with the entitlement mentality.

    Yes,

You know what else can affect somebodies work? Excuses.

Making excuses for people only reinforces the entitlement mentality you espouse.

Does he deserve a second chance. Sure. But that isn't what this is about, this is about $15 an hour non-sense.

I pay my intern with a college degree $15 an hour because she is unlicensed, and she shows up to work every day, on time, with everything she needs to perform her tasks.

$15 an hour to drop off sandwiches, and can't even remember to bring a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing pen. Pfft. Come on.

You think people like me haven't? Sorry, I am not going to conform to your class war fare agenda. I worked fast food while in high school, and within a year was managing the store every night. After serving in the military, acting as a team leader as a Corporal (A position reserved for a staff sergeant) I attended college working nearly full time as a waiter.

I have worked these jobs, and never once, not once, did I think it was worth $15 an hour. Even when I was "busting my ass" by remembering to bring a pen.

    - - - Updated - - -

Wa, wa, wa. The excuses and belly aching of this entitlement crowd is deafening.

Good god. Its attitudes like yours that are the problem.

I did get an engineering degree pulling all nighters. I would understand how to adequately deliver a sandwich.

    - - - Updated - - -

I don't think he deserves $15 an hour, even if he was here in 10 minutes, found the office without a map, and remembered a pen.

He CERTAINLY doesn't deserve it when he can do none of those things right.

So essentially, yes, you judge that person based on that one encounter, and that they don't deserve the money they make because of your one experience. >>>MOD EDIT Off Topic Removed<<<

And to your first part, I'm sure that plenty of people behind your back say that you don't deserve what you make. Especially with your hostile attitude. Your whole thread is one big complaint.

So all the times you get the right order in a timely fashion you are thinking to yourself "this guy is way over paid". What exactly is your issue here. That someone you aren't employing is making X amount of money?

You know, the world I came from every customer was writing my paycheck. I had things happen in my life, but when I was at work I didn’t bring it on the job with me. I treated customers like they were king. They were spending their hard-earned money so I can get a paycheck.

I stopped going to the McDonald’s near me. It took 3 visits to get the message that they don’t care about the customers coming into their place. I would go in, walk up to the counter waiting for a “may I help you sir” only to get silence; and not only silence, but they wouldn’t even look at me. They’d get distracted with someone else in the line like a girl or a friend. Then they’d screw my order all up. The last time I went there the girl at the counter said “yeah!” when I walked up to the counter instead of “may I help you”. I walked out, and never returned. The KFC near me… both times (the second being the last) I went there they didn’t even have any chicken ready. NO CHICKEN at a chicken restaurant.

This is really pretty typical with just about every minimum wage place you go to; except Chic Fil-A. Actually, I think they pay their employees more than MW. I have NEVER had a bad experience in any of their restaurants. The people are always courteous and seem to appreciate their customers. I think you can guess why that is.

I care about what they’ve been through, but that doesn’t give them the right to treat their customers – the people that write their paychecks – like dirt. They also need to consider what their customers may have been through as well. They aren’t the only ones that may have had a bad day.

Right, as I stated, it's different if you get consistant trouble from them. I agree. But deliveries are a different story.

    WTF

At what point did I become responsible for this dudes life? I don't remember patting anybody on the butt and being called "dada".

That is a liberal perspective. That if we don't pay this guy what is considered a "living wage", then I should be responsible as part of society to supplement and subsidize his existence.

Thats a nice little argument there, that no matter which side of the argument I am on, I am responsible. No wonder this kid isn't worried about remembering a pen. We as a society have excused his responsibility to EARN what is necessary to sustain his existence.

    Wages are not arbitrary.

I am so tired of hearing this concept that we just get to assign ourselves a value. Unions do it, minimum wage employees do it...

There is absolutely no way for a society to sustain a monetary system, based on wages for products and labor, if the wages are arbitrary. Want to talk about hyper inflation.

Wages have fallen because our (*)(*)(*)(*)ing economy sucks. Because we desire to trade on a level playing field with China who isn't playing fair and allowing our manufacturers to cross the border to Mexico to produce products that they freely ship right back here to sell us thanks to NAFTA.

You want wages in general to increase? Fix the underlaying problems responsible for the undercut. You think that ONLY minimum wage earners haven't seen real wages increase? False. That is across the board. Why do you think the minimum wage people always point to the very small 1%, because if they pointed to everybody else for validation of their arbitrary wages, it wouldn't work.

    Nice red herring.

Well, if thats the bar you are establishing, no wonder we are having the problems we have.

I swear to (*)(*)(*)(*)ing god, I am surrounded by some of the biggest excuse making, belly aching, cry babies I have ever witnessed. You want a pity party, because some dude delivers sandwiches, rather than sitting on welfare? Good thing nobody has expectations of our math and science fields to be filled with qualified candidates. /sarcasm

Its time to stop all the *******n crying. All the (*)(*)(*)(*)ing excuse making, and all of the entitlement bs that is destroying this country. You want $15 an hour. Get off your lazy (*)(*)(*)(*)ing pathetic ass and go get an education or experience in a demanded profession that warrants that rate or higher. Stop trying to demonize those who have earned their wealth why systematically under cutting the system by excusing every Tom, Dick, and Harry that can't figure out how to sustain, at a minimum, their own damn existence on this planet.

Oh, and remember to bring a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing pen if you need somebody to sign something.

You tell us. That's far above the Illinois minimum wage, and the cost of living in Illinois doesn't seem that high... but I just visit now and then.

No. He doesn't deserve what ever his paycheck is for his terrible performance. Most certainly, he doesn't deserve $15 an hour for the quality of service he provided.

If this was an isolated incident, your excuses might be valid. To the rest of us that deal with minimum wage workers on a daily basis, this isn't the exception but the norm.

The implication of your post is that you're judging the value of a position (food delivery person), which is filled by hundreds of thousands of people across the country, based on this single bad experience with one of them. And, it seems, you think that making a mistake one time (that you know of), out of the hundred or so deliveries that person will make in a day, means that person and everyone else who does that job should earn less than a living wage. Sounds totally reasonable.

Anyway, next time hold the tip until the food is actually delivered. Then you can adjust some of the delivery person's pay based on merit and possibly affect some change in his/her future performance.

You know what. Those people that say that I don't deserve what I make don't have to hire my firm.

The fact that other people DO is validation that I am worth what I make.

You're *******n right its one big complaint. $15 an hour for this type of work is ridiculous.

    - - - Updated - - -

Apparently you missed in the OP where the conversation was about the desire to raise the minimum wage to $15.

I do like to give places a second or third change; but in the context of the thread, I don't think they deserve a pay raise by government mandate. 1) I don't think they deserve it. 2) it won't solve the problem of being underpaid. And 3) If it's going to $15, why not $20 or $50? It won't matter what the amount is; the economy will adjust making $15 just like it were $7.25.

Oh good. You agree. The minimum wage argument is first world problems to people eating flies in Nigeria. That argument is silly.

    We agree.

Minimum wage can stay where its at. Thanks for agreeing.
