    Nice content-free retort. Typical.

And that proves what, exactly? That one of the north's generals had a biased opinion? Bravo.

The South chose treason and war because they feared for the future of slavery. They sowed the wind and reaped the whirlwind.

Your post was a mere recitation of falsehoods. Ignoring it was the polite thing to do.
    • Alexander Stephens, Vice-President of the Confederacy, referring to the Confederate government: "Its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery . . . is his natural and normal condition." [Augusta, Georgia, Daily Constitutionalist, March 30, 1861.]

Your post attempted to push the slavery issue into a subset of economics. That is a false trail. The Stephens quote makes it clear the South's devotion to slavery was independent of any economic grievance with the North.

Slavery was an economic issue as well. Many Northerners didn’t care about the slaves, either, and just had it in for the South.

People make the factors far too simplistic in discussions like these about the Civil War.

I agree that many in the North didn't care about the slaves, but many did. And the South saw limits on slavery, and an eventual movement toward abolition, as an existential threat, justifying treason, secession and war.

Sure they did. But not because they just liked owning slaves for the giggles. $$$$

They regarded their ownership of Africans as part of the God-given natural order of things and the foundation of their society.

And so it did. People have a right to defend their existence.

They were defending slavery. Not "their existence." And slavery was core to their identity.

Hrmmm did he say that before or after he was almost dishonorably discharged for drunkenness and cowardice and refusing to leave his tent because he was scared to get killed?

Also was it before or after he assumed command and brutally laid waste to Georgia while actively avoiding military battalions from the south and targeting civilian populations sending his men in to rob, rape and pillage innocent civilians salting their earth leaving them to starve to death in the coming winter?

Sherman was a coward and a terrorist. He would be hung for war crimes if he did today what he did back then.

Which was misquoted and when the journalist was pressed by Stephens to make corrections he refused. So Stephens put out his own corrections.

But you don’t know anything more about that subject than that one sentence you copy and pasted.

Sure. They were defending their existence as a slave based economy.
