What an unfortunate development. It is lamentable sporting activity is sullied by politics, but this is necessary when the conduct of some state is outrageous. Hosting the FIFA world cup is a prestigious accomplishment, it's like the Olympics for soccer (known as "football" outside the US). There is still time for Putin to make amends, but I doubt he will, in fact I expect he will "double down" and perpetrate more outrages before kickoff.

Like the Olympics at Socchi, Russia has been preparing for the World Cup for years - and Britain and the US have done everything possible to take it away from them. Putin knew that as the games approached, the propaganda would get worse as it did with the Olympics.

The US team did not qualify, but if the heads of states like Britain and Germany tried to keep the fans from going, there would be hell to pay. (I wonder how the Russians are going to control the British fans. In Amsterdam last week, they were on a bridge pouring beer on the passengers below.)
