It is impossible to say when and what this counter attack will be. Its mostly bloggers and western think tanks that are pushing the counter offensive narrative. Its hard to guess what will happen until it does and on what scale, as the article links points out it could just be pressure along the entire front line more than a lightning attack in a single area.

But I just point this out as Zelensky is putting out information today that the counter offensive will not start until they are given more weapons from the west. Could be disinformation, but is from official Ukranian source.

I think its more likely attrition and recruitment problems that are limiting Ukraine's ability to launch a major offensive. Its hard to create offensive units when you are having to replace losses to existing ones. But I suppose an offensive is still a possibility if they have positions that just wont be at full strength, we will just have to wait and see.

Don't buy it Jack - not on the basis that your pask record on predictions is atrocious - but simply on the basis that Ukraine is getting pummled at the moment .. no more professional soldiers left .. near all dead .. replaced by green Lads .. now getting mowed down .. fed into the meat grinder at an alarming rate .. life expetency in the trenches -- lucky to make it through the first day..

You cheerleading the war .. crying "Orc Orc Orc" and spewing propaganda is not helping to save lives and end the suffering in what is an already lost cause.

Some prominent Russian milbloggers criticized the Russian military command for continuing to impale Russian forces on Vuhledar with ineffective human-wave style frontal assaults. The milbloggers claimed that current Russian tactics against Vuhledar, which include an initial frontal assault followed by assaults against fortified Ukrainian flanks, result in high Russian combat losses resulting in no gains due to challenging terrain, lack of combat power, and failure to surprise Ukrainian forces.[10] The milbloggers called on Russian forces to cut Ukrainian ground lines of communication (GLOCs) into Vuhledar both with strikes against rear GLOCs and by encircling the settlement for a multi-vector attack, but implied that Russian forces are unable to implement these suggestions due to munitions shortages and the failure to take many settlements surrounding Vuhledar.[11] Russian forces are unable to sustain any significant rate of advance anywhere on the front line using these human-wave style attacks, and the Vuhledar area once held informational significance to Russian milbloggers during the offensive for Pavlivka in in late October and early November 2022.[12] The Russian 155th Naval Infantry Brigade has been destroyed and reconstituted as many as eight times since the start of the war in large part due losses sustained during the prolonged effort against Vuhledar.[13] The re-emergence of vitriolic criticism about Russian failures near Vuhledar likely reflects the information space’s ongoing frustration with the Russian military command amid deep-seated fear about a prospective future Ukrainian counteroffensive. Ouch! But yeah, what we are seeing is in line with how I assessed this mess when it began. It was clear from day one that Putler had bitten off more than he could chew when he launched this invasion. The orcs' spectacular failures around Kyiv, Kharkiv and Kherson only made this all the more abundantly clear, and now this grinding failure around Bakhmut, Avdiivka and elsewhere is doing likewise. They simply do not have the military means to overcome Ukraine's military in any meaningful way.

 

Russia has been fighting this war for a year and its soldiers are still driving tanks through minefields and getting picked off at distance. Their greatest tactical innovation in that time has been to revive WW1 German infantry tactics. This was supposed to be the most powerful single army in Europe and it still can't mount a basic armoured assault against a nation that most observers expected to fold inside the first month of the war.

Russia is just fortunate this wasn't against a NATO military, though by the time this ends Ukraine may closely resemble one.

 

I predict several Ph.D. dissertations will be forthcoming to document and analyze the Russian military failure in Ukraine.

 

'Several' is probably understating the case. Military institutions alone will produce a substantial body of work. Add what comes out of non-military bodies and this will almost become its own little field. In the short term soldiers are going ot want to know what lessons there are to learn. In the longer term people are still going to be fascinated by all manner of perspectives.
