That's not all, the French navy launched rockets from the frigate Auvergne - and it all happened right after the Russian Defense Minister announced after a meeting with Turkey, that they would not conduct a military operation in Idlib.

The French Navy’s newest frigate, FS Auvergne, fired rockets around 8pm GMT Monday, the Russian military said. “Airspace control has recorded rocket launches from the French frigate Auvergne,” the ministry’s statement read. The Auvergne is deployed in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Syria.

The launch was detected around the same time as air traffic controllers at the Khmeimim Air Base “lost contact” with a military Il-20 aircraft during an attack of Israeli F-16 fighters on Latakia. Fourteen people were on board the plane at the time of the disappearance. A search and rescue mission is underway.

A RUSSIAN surveillance plane with 14 people on board that ‘disappeared from radar’ is believed to have been accidentally shot down by Syrian regime forces who were under attack from Israeli missiles.

There are conflicting reports as to who is responisible for the downing of the aircraft, however the US claims it was accidentally shot down by the Syrian regime’s anti-aircraft artillery after the Syrians came under fire by Israeli missiles.

CNN cites a ‘US official with knowledge of the incident’.

Syria has blamed Israel for the disappearance of the Russian aircraft - for launching a missile strike in the first place.

This is turning into a free-for-all against Syria, with the only caveat being to not directly target Russia.

Now, with this plane and crew likely lost as a direct result of these attacks on Syria, can Putin not react and still retain credibility, both at home and abroad?

Also, this has to have been an attack coordinated by Israel and France. The US had to have given the nod to this attack. This is no longer a thinly disguised civil war; it is a war against Syria.

There we go again, "a US official with knowledge of the incident said it was accidentally shot down by the Syrians," as if anything being said by the media could be believed.

Looks like the 'bastards' can't stand the thought of peace unless it's on their terms and an enslavement of the Syrian people. Right now there are warships from the US, France, Britain, Germany, Turkey, and Russia throughout the Eastern Mediterranean.

I know the Russians do not make idle threats, and they said that any attack on Syria is an attack on them. The only nation given leeway was Israel for its security reasons. Considering the extent Russia went to appease them, and knowing that Latakia is not close to the Israeli border I think changes the equation.

The Russians are furious at Nato's involvement in the attack at Latakia, and according to Greekpronews, they are holding a special meeting at the Kremlin. But what do they expect? How many times they bombed Syrian troops, and always under some pretense. What's to stop them from doing it again, and again, and again. This time though it hit home with the missing plane.

I've got a feeling this won't be seen as just another "provocation".

The Syrian and Russian air defenses are integrated. Hard to see how this could be the result of friendly fire.

Russia has built up its naval force in the Mediterranean. If there is ever going to be a reaction from Russia, this would be the time.

I think Washington wants a full scale war in Syria, and wants Russia to react - which it will, but not the way they expect. Russia might give Assad the S-400 he wants, as well as bomb some facility of theirs with US, UK, Fr and Israeli agents. They've done that before.

And according to Tass, the airplane disappeared over the Mediterranean Sea - so it was probably the French. They shot missiles at the same time Israel attacked, so it was coordinated.

    Love all the assumptions.
Quote, breathlessly, "an attack coordinated by Israel and France"
and "US had to have given the nod to this attack."

Like the US gave the nod to the shooting down to the Malaysia airline over the Ukraine?
Maybe the US gave the nod to destroying the Malaysian airline MH370 in the Indian Ocean?

Marvelous what Internet warriors can find, and so quickly.

MOSCOW/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Russia’s defense ministry said early on Tuesday that one if its military aircraft with 14 people on board disappeared from radar screens over Syria at the same time that Israeli and French forces were mounting aerial attacks on targets in Syria.

A U.S. official said Washington believed the aircraft, which is an Il-20 turbo-prop plane used for electronic reconnaissance, was inadvertently shot down by anti-aircraft artillery operated by Moscow’s ally, the Syrian government.

Around the time the plane disappeared, the Syrian coastal city of Latakia — near a Russian airbase to which the Il-20 was returning — came under attack from “enemy missiles”, and missile defense batteries responded, Syrian state media reported.

    So what are your sources?
1 - Internet speculation by left-wing armchair experts
    2 - Russia (aka Putin's press)
    3 - Western media

I placed them in order of your preferences, and counter to common-sense.

Sources of it "accidentally shot down by the Syrians"? It's the claim made by "a US official" so you'll have to ask him/her for his/her "sources". But don't get your hopes too high. "US officials" have a habit of reluctance in providing proof or sources of anything at all.

But perhaps you are asking for the sources suggesting the media might not be a reliable source of honest information? I have just provided it.

What are your sources for these claims?

You may as well say CNN is your source.
I ask for the source for assigning blame. As it is, they are speculation.
    Guilt by speculation.
But think about it for a moment - you can only have three sources here -
    1 - speculation
2 - one side of the war
3 - the other side of the war

Your chances of getting the truth are far more likely in Western media
    because it is more transparent.

ie Israel said they killed between 500 and 700 Hezbollah fighters in the
    last Lebanese War.
Hezbollah said these were civilians - no Hezbollah were killed.
Later Hezbollah held commemorations for the 600 dead Hezbollah.

Google how many journalists Russia has killed, including the last guy
who reported on the dead Russians in Syria.

I'm going to hazard a guess that Syria's inept army did indeed hit that Russian plane by mistake, and Russia is either running interference on their behalf by fingering the French frigate or has made a mistake concerning the launch they think they detected coming from it. The lies and propaganda surrounding Russian and Syrian military efforts are so thick you could swim in them.

    So what's the bad news?

With fewer russkies there'll be a smaller group of you to have to share the end of year putin bonuses around christmas time, isn't that a good thing?

You mass murder 1M people, use chemical weapons on them, and ethnically cleanse another 13M people - and you deserve FAR, FAR worse than what that b@stard assad has been dealt with so far.

I pray he finds painful justice on the streets of Damascus soon.

putin may be signing your checks, but he does not rule the world, or the mideast. He doesn't get to decide what happens there, and while I have you on ignore so I can avoid your relentless kremlin-written propaganda, it is hilarious that you think anyone takes you even remotely seriously at this point who has read more than 2 of your posts.

And you might want to come up with a more authentic avatar than the joke you have now, like a photo of the kremlin /red square for starters.

Yeah boris, putie boy is going to start WW3 over little poodle assad and syria - not going to happen while Trump is in office. obama is gone; the US exterminated 400 russian dogs already in syria who tested them and turned them into hamburger.

You want more of that, come knocking on my front door.

All we know right now is as follows:
    1. There was an attack in Syria.
    2. The Russians claim France participated in it.
    3. The Russians claim one of thier planes is missing.
    4. The Americans claim they had nothing to do with the attack.
All other things are pure speculations.

Then clearly the Russian defense minister was wrong and they could.
