According to the Treaty, the American ships can go into the Black Sea if the accumulative tonnage doesn't exceed a certain amount, and they can only stay a certain amount of days. So when one leave, the other enters. Also they have to notify the Turks 14 days in advance when a ship is to enter.

Other than that, Erdogan wants to build a canal that will bypass the Bosporus, and does not have to comply with the Montreaux Treaty.

Erdogan is a sharp cookie and he doesn't mess around with Putin. He knows just how far he can go, and how to play the different parties. Should he fall, and there's a possibility of that because of Turkey's economic problems, then the fireworks will start.
