Should Blacks be paid "reparations" today because of slavery in the United States?

Trying to keep it simple and unbiased in the phrasing of the question, but one which really only needs a "yes" or "no" answer. Either you think that the country needs to pay Blacks because of the fact that there was once slavery in the U. S. until it was finally removed by the Civil War after 1865, or, you do not....

Other threads can be created to accommodate "shades of gray" opinions, but this one is very clear-cut and direct. Either the whole concept paying "reparations" Blacks for a condition that existed in this country up until 156 years ago is one you agree with with, or, it is not.

Definitely not. Where you start in life does not limit where you can go, let alone what position your great great great grandparents were in. I don't know how that would even be possible. Does any black person get payouts? What if they were immigrants and never slaves? What if your ancestors were a slave of a different race, like chinese rail labor? Irish indentured servants? There is just no way this accomplishes anything except further racial divisions.

 

I voted for reparations for comic effect.

Within 18 months of the checks going out there will be a full court media press with mass BLM demonstrations telling us that it was too little too late. Nothing has changed. America is still racist.

That’s one of the major issues with this.

• Who will be a recipient: is it just black people in general or do they have to prove ancestry?
• How will the funds be distributed: will it be given in equal parts to all recipients or will it be divided by number of individuals that come from the original victim?

I have seen ranges from $250k per person all the way up to $151 million per person (no, that isn’t a typo [source])

Why should people that have never owned a slave pay people that have never been a slave to atone for slavery? It makes no sense.

 

It would be a massive injection of money into the economy but your average family, especially if they are poor, likely have very little financial literacy and would be in the same position they originally came from in a few decades if not years. It would make some very wealthy people even more wealthy though.

 

Not a word of your post says squat about slavery or race, so why create a program that is contingent on someone's connection to slavery or race?

We can create a program to provide the poor of this country with checks, after they have some passing credits in the local community college in personal finance etc. We can insist on some education and structure it as you like . I see that program as accomplishing a goal!

 

That alone would do more than reparations ever could. We need to invest in education, health and well-being. Not just throwing money at people.

I said no simply because of the word 'pay'. I would support offering the descendants of veterens and freed slaves their modern day equivalent of '40 acres and a mule' that was renegged on so long ago. From the vast coffers of govt land, of course. Homesteading rules (no immediate resale to big bank land developers and such) might be prudent as well, though maybe not.
