Should civilians be considered valid targets in war?

During the Korean War, and to a degree during Vietnam War, USA did target civilians. Overall, about 3 million civilians were killed by American Firepower since WWII.

 

If we were truly civilized they would be no need for war, so the question would be moot.
But we have things like the MIC and the obscenely rich, with money as their god. So we have many wars.

I believe that would be a violation of the Geneva Conventions. Thing is they are only binding on signatories, if I recall correctly.

Definitely Nazis are guilty of worst Genocides in History. But USA also committed genocide -- bombing of Japan 1945, bombing of North Korea 1950-'53, bombing of Southeast Asia 1965-'73.

No, not even close... Hitler and the Nazis were rank amateurs at genocide and depravity compared to Stalin and Mao.

The Russians lost the most people in WW II, but that was only because Stalin viewed humans as a disposable resource.

The estimates vary, but of all my research on these topics over the years I've come to conclude that the "official estimates" are well below reality.

My estimates put the Soviet Union death count between 50-70 million (and I think that's low); and, Mao's murderous handiwork at over 200 million (and counting).

The Chinese Communist Party murders people every day. The genocide is no longer systematic, but everyone in China knows full well that if they run afoul of someone who is connected to the party, they could be vanished in the blink of an eye.

War includes attacking the enemy homeland. I was in the Field Artillery in the Army. We used to say that our mission was "To kill the Godless enemy by the thousands, rearrange terrain, and make cave dwelling an acceptable standard of living in the homelands of our enemies."

Lol no. Just think about it. When you lose a war, badly enough that you fall into enemy hands, the enemy makes you pay. When you win or walk away like Vietnam, you don't. You really think Truman was going to face war crimes trials for bombing the **** out of Japan after winning had it been ratified/retroactively applied? Geneva means nothing if you win. Other nations just wag their fingers at you.

That was a fairly nasty post and uncalled for. We don't bomb schools, hospitals and malls or noncombatants. We have spent a fortune on targeting tools like "Human Terrain Analysis" to ensure we know where the noncombatants are so we don't target them. Things like "carpet bombing" which destroyed huge areas indiscriminately are now obsolete, replaced with precision systems like JDAMS which utilize laser aiming to get steel on the target and not noncombatants. Unmanned aerial vehicles (now called "uncrewed" in the woke world we live in) typically use HELLFIRE missiles which, again, are precision guided munitions to avoid noncombatant casualties as much as possible. But wars involve killing the bad guys. It always will.

Yes I am. Think about it Joe, around 42% of households in the US have guns. If you pick a fight with America, you'd better be very concerned about its citizens. I don't think a land invasion would go well for anyone who'd try. So if I was going to war against America, citizens would definitely be a valid target.
