I already KNOW how to drive. It's not ME I'm concerned about.

It's irresponsible, horrible drivers like YOU that concern me.

lol im pretty sure im a much better driver than you and even most common motorists. but i still know that even the best of drivers still have accidents, sometimes bad things just happen.

i dont know about you but id rather be as prepared as i can be, so if you go into bankruptcy because you dont have auto insurance dont cry about it.

I have insurance... I only made the statement that my state offers an alternative. You don't seem to like choice.

So, I should have to pay for it before anything ever happens, and could possibly never happen? That's what your'e saying, isn't it?

    Security over liberty, eh?

So that justifies me having to pay for your damages before they ever, if ever, happen? I disagree, frankly.

You do realize that if car insurance were voluntary, rather than state-enforced, car insurance companies would have to actually be good enough to attract customers voluntarily, just like any other private market, do you not?

Actually, spoken like a mature adult. You have a choice: Carry insurance, or walk.

    Grow up, junior.

Do you support people being forced to buy health insurance, if they are to drive? And thus have the "option" to carry health/life insurance, or else not drive?

    Waitaminute.

You note that you can pay the DMV $500, and you don't have to carry insurance...

...and you call car insurance the scam??

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, the scam in your State sounds like...

No, it is not. I could easily hurt your body badly if I wrecked your car and it were my fault on the road. Does that mean I should not only be forced to pay for car insurance, but health insurance too, or else not drive? What about other forms of insurance that would protect your family's financial well-being in case you died from that wreck?

The number of stupid comments you're putting up is getting staggering. There are a lot of things you're not "free" to do. You're not free to engage in a privileged behaviour without first meeting your responsibilities.

That includes getting a driver's license. I asked you this before, and I believe you ignored it.

Should you have to have a license (proof that you've learned the rules of the road) in order to be able to drive?

I don't give a crap if you do - it's not your call to make. If you want to beg society's indulgence to make use of roads we have collectively paid for, you are dámned well going to obey the rules set forth for so doing - or you'll pay the consequences.

Making the product mandatory has nothing to do with the free market pressures still in place forcing insurance companies to do their best to woo subscribers.

Or haven't you noticed the millions of dollars being spent by Geico, Farmer's, Allstate, Progressive, AmFam, etc to woo your business?

Your excuse is - again - stupid.

If it is your fault, you pay. Isn't that the "risks of going on the road"? If you don't want liability for your own actions, then don't drive.

BTW, New Hampshire is the only state that does not require one has auto insurance. But you are still liable for the damages, it is just that the person you hit or their insurance company has to sue you if you can't/won't pay.

Big George is correct; this is a non-sequitur. Health Insurance is coverage for oneself; not for others.

Figure out the difference, for crissakes.

Yes, vehicle insurance is a scam between the state (DMV) and insurance companies. When the mandate comes from the federal government that you MUST have health insurance... it's the same scam.

That depends on who does the deciding as to whether I can drive "well enough" to be on the road.

But although I'm not an anarchist, paying for your damages before they happen is not just. If we accept a society where people pay for others' damages before they happen, and take that to it's logical conclusion, then we get communism. Plain and simple.

You may be a conservative on some issues, but you are quite liberal on this one. Most people, Republican or Democrat, want to sacrifice freedom/property rights for security in some ways, but this is too far IMO.

    Corporate lobbying, you mean?

I'm wondering if this thread refers to 3rd party injury and property damage?

In Australia when we register a car we have to ensure it's road worthy via a mechanical inspection (if the car is older than three years) and have 3rd party injury and property damage insurance, as well as "normal" car insurance which covers damage to your own vehicle and the person's vehicle you hit. To keep a car on the road in Australia it could cost you atleast 1000 bucks a year when you include registration and insurances. It is also impossible to register a car without 3rd party injury and property damage insurance.

We also have a choice of insurance companies for car insurances. Most also offer a pretty good no claim annual bonus.

To add, insurance for vehicle (yours and the vehicle you hit ) isn't compulsory.

It's insurance that's forced on you, nonetheless.

Let's call it "Insurance X". It is forced on you to pay in case you irresponsibly wreck into someone's vehicle and hurt their bodies and/or kill them and leave their family without income, if they are the income earner. It will pay for peoples' medical bills that they incur during car crashes and pay their families whilst they are off work due to injury, if such applies.

Do you think we should state-mandate Insurance X? Why or why not?

No, it isn't. Driving is a societally granted privilege which is accompanied by certain requirements in order to take part. The mandate to carry insurance against harmful acts is for the protection of others; not yourself.

Health insurance is not mandated out of the free choice of the individual to partake in a privilege, and - as such - mandating it is a violation of rights.

That is a non-answer. SHOULD YOU BE REQUIRED TO DEMONSTRATE DRIVING COMPETENCE?

Illogical, by definition. You must have home insurance if you take out a mortgage, because you have a responsibility to protect the rights of others when you take from them their latitude. In the case of the mortgage, you are taking the money from a bank, which - in return - requires protection.

When you drive, you are putting others at risk, and - in return - these 'others' demand that you provide protections for them in the event of an accident.

This is not difficult; you have lost this argument.

No, I am not. This is about personal responsibility, which is quintessentially a conservative position. Your position is being decimated at every turn.

No, it is not. You have no 'right' in this regard. You are engaging a societally granted privilege by driving. It is NOT a right!

WTF does that have to do with what I said? The millions spent on ads directed at the public have nothing whatever to do with corporate lobbying.

Your argument has been soundly whipped.

Oh. Well, yes. But that doesn't translate to anything even remotely close to forced insurance.

No one is forced to even go on the roads, nor should they be for any reason. You could make another argument, also authoritarian but at least fair to some extent, that people should have to demonstrate that they could cover damages of other drivers if they were to cause a wreck.

Blaming people for accidents? I agree with that in some cases, but I don't equate accidents with intentional aggression/violence. Forcing people to buy car insurance, is equating accidents with intentional aggression/violence.

Accidents happen. Sometimes, they are very costly. Sometimes they aren't even caused by you, yet happen to you.

That doesn't mean we should make society a communistic "everyone pays before anything happens in case it does" ultra-safety net authoritarian Hell hole.

Well, at least there are "competing" companies. But they still have an unjust playing field granted to them.

Now, if state-enforced car insurance were abolished as it should be, car companies could still have "you either have car insurance or we don't sell you a car" policies. But that would be a private deal, not a state-enforced ponzi scheme. HUGE difference.

yep you should. you see driving is a dangerous game no matter where you are or what you might be doing. you are driving a 3 ton hunk of motor 40mph or more with people in their 3 ton+ cars or trucks driving the same speeds or greater.

driving is a PRIVILEGE,NOT A RIGHT!!! you DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT to be in a moving hunk of possible destruction and not be ble to pay up for the damages you can cause whether purposely or accidentally.

you have every right to pursue a drivers license, but just like everything else there are rules you must follow and rightfully so one of those rules to being able to have the PRIVILEGE TO DRIVE is to carry atleast liability auto insurance.

dont like it, stay the hell of the road.

yep it sure does, and your irresponsibility shows. you have a personal responsibility to be able to cover the people around you if you happen to destroy their vehicles or even put them in the hospital and they have a responsibility to be able to cover you if they do the same.

rules are rules, dont like it then dont drive.

you realize if car insurance were voluntary nobody would get it, and those that have it would have to have their own insurance foot the bill for (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)s that dont have it, causing the insurance holders rates to go up because insurance companies constantly hvae to shell out money because an uninsured motorist cant pay for my vehicle to get fixed.

and what prey tell do you think is "good enough" ??? $5 a month? i only pay $34 a month for one of my cars, id say thats pretty friggin reasonable and thats for a SUV.

so tell me, what are "reasonable" prices in your mind?

please, choose to be a moron lol, i dont care what you do as long as the bill comes out of your pocket and not my insurance.
