With the world building up on 'off shore islands,' the types that are near to the coast of the continent, and maybe in some places like indonesia, there needs to be a way to keep them from sinking. this sinking business comes from, i suppose, the weight of the buildings on the island not being firmly supported by rocks from beneath, but rather some loose clay or other rock like substance that cannot handle the weight, of course.

The solution to his is to 'drill a hole' in the centre of the island, and place firm metal girders about a kilometre into the earth, or, until it meets 'firm resistance.' this can then be backed up by using some principles from mining to get the girders to go horizontally for some distance to ease the weight on the soft earth beneath the island.
