My first dog, a Shepherd Collie mix, was named Shultz. Hogan's Heroes was one of the favorites in our house growing up.

Pretty much everyone thought they knew everything in their younger years. Funny how that view changes as time goes by.

    The history of Columbus Day

"He (Benjamin Harrison) settled on two courses of action.
First, he agreed to pay each family of the lynched Italians $25,000, a substantial sum in 1891.[8] Then he did something remarkable: he decided to use the office of the president to acknowledge the contributions of Italians and Italian Americans to the United States"

Our dogs had some excitement yesterday. We rode down to the beaver pond and the pups went exploring around the wooded area. We called them and started home when the dogs started barking. I turned around to look and realized they had a mocassin they were after. They stayed just out of his strike distance and kept barking at the snake. We called them off and the snake went back to the pond. They were excited, to say the least.

We have a nice pecan harvest this year, the first good harvest we have had in a long time. So far I have over two gallons shelled and bagged.

Wow. Two gallons of shelled and bagged pecans is a lot of pecans and work. Thats a lot of deliciousness on the way. Very cool, Daisy. Its a good year for pecans?
We have fig trees in pots. We had them for many years. Last fall we decided it was enough with dragging the fig trees inside. We put them in a wooded area and blew leaves on them. I figured they would die back or straight out die. Nope. They survived and gave so many figs I made fig jam. First time ever for the fig jam. So this year we are going to plant them and blow the leaves on them again. Im tempted to cover them because thats really how it should be done.

    I'm not a colonialist.
    I'm Italian.
I'll stop celebrating Columbus Day when they pry my cold dead hands off my gabagool and provolone grinder.

I have multiple pecan trees--maybe a dozen--but never have gotten a single one off them. They must just not be ideal in our area. I just let the wildlife have at it if they so desire. Same with our persimmons, but I have had a few of those just to have them turn my guts inside out as soon as a bit into them. God they are awful.

We have a few pecan trees that are not reachable because of the undergrowth near the creek so the squirrels claim those pecans. Maybe your pecans need a bit of fertilizer. Fertilize them around the drip line and make sure they get water in the dry months. Your Ag. agent might be able to tell you what to do about your pecan trees. A persimmon has to be fully ripe or you will have a pucker that lasts for a while. Wild persimmons are a bit astringent even when ripe.

I have a fig tree I have been nursing along for years and it just doesn't like where it is planted. I will have plenty of leaves soon and will try the leaf bit and see how it does.

Yes, for us it is a good year. Michael took one harvest and there were no more till this year. There are still pecans to be picked up and have some more ready to be cracked. We have one little tree that is about 12 years old and the squirrels and I fight over those pecans they are good. First come first served is the order of the day.

Been wondering when your getaway was going to happen. I think you said once but any more time means nothing this whole year has been weird, to say the least. I have been training my Border collie to learn the red frisbee is Republican and the Blue is Democrat. He took the blue one into the field and left it there, he wouldn't bring it back. He must be a Republican. Just saying not meaning to be too political.

Haven't posted here for a while. Been working on that dang pond. I have twelve fig trees and one pecan tree. The fig trees were cuttings from my neighbors. It's been a while since they were set out. We got a few figs this year... but not many... and no pecans. But the squirrels got a few. That cement pond has leaked since being built and it has been a learning experience. First green water, then the constant leaking and hauling water from canoe creek, and then the fish picked up a parasite. So, all my attempts at finding and fixing all the leaks in both ponds started. I put a liner in the filter pond and stopped it from leaking. The top pond proved difficult because of the three pillars that holds up the waterfall. I won't put in a liner that has to be cut. And that cornmeal didn't work. It just made the water nasty. I then drained the water, caught the fish, and dried out the pond. The bottom was leaking due to hydrostatic pressure so I cleared out the cracks and sealed with silicone. Liquid rubber is too expensive. Ya see the pond held water at a certain depth but started leaking after adding more water. Then..... After I filled it up to the leak point.... guess what? It started leaking at the same level. By now I am pretty much past discouraged. It wasn't losing water as quickly and I guessed the general area it was leaking. I had some blue food coloring so I used it to chase down the leak. It was a place about 1/2 inch long and a 1/16 wide. I covered it with fiberglass resin after sanding. Hopefully I got it stopped....finally. Tomorrow will tell.
