Oh how has this comedy gold not made it onto the board yet?

    https://www.foxnews.com/politics/st...eek-fetal-heartbeat-claims-manufactured-sound

“At an event at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Abrams claimed that the sound of such fetal heartbeats is "manufactured" by men seeking to "take control" of women.

"There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks," Abrams, who is running against incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, told the audience. "It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman's body."”

This complete and utter moron is actually running for Governor. Do any of our liberals here agree with her? That the fetal heartbeat at 6 weeks is simply manufactured by men to control women? Seems weird female gynecologists would use it to.

    What say you?

This is the same woman who pushed vigorously to have the 2021 MLB All-Star game moved out of Atlanta and then turned around and totally denied that she had a hand in the move in spite of a massive amount of video evidence that shows that she did.

This is also the same woman who claimed voter disenfranchisement in a few rural Georgia counties where some of the voting sites were eliminated.
Then it was found out that the only counties that were effected were those counties where Blacks hold the majority voting blocks on the county councils. It was all staged for political grandstanding.

Needless to say, this woman is 60 miles of bad road as are most Democrat politicians these days.

The people can’t define what a woman is are now experts on defining what a living being is.

If NASA ever finds a poppy seed on Pluto, both NASA and the left would call it life.

Sure there's a heartbeat. The better point is that the heart is just a pump, so it's asinine to base personhood upon it. I think people get confused because doctors use it as a shortcut. True death is based upon what's going on in the brain, but instead of measuring brainwaves if an adult has no heartbeat and is not connected to ECMO death is likely imminent, and one can look at other things on the physical exam such as fixed pupils. So it's not just Abrams who is confused on medical facts. The whole pro-life movement is as well.

A human being with a mind and feelings. As opposed to a mindless ball of cells, or collection of cells that resembles a baby. Well more broadly, it's the point at which an entity is legally recognized as having rights, as opposed to a part of another person's body or just tissue.

The beginnings of a baby's brain activity start around 6 weeks of gestation too. Heartbeats are just a whole lot easier to detect. Some people even get fetal heartbeat monitors and listen to their baby's heart beating on their own.

The brain does far more than think. Early brain development is not about consciousness, i.e. having a mind. That doesn't come until after 20 weeks. Without a mind (at least a rudimentary one), there is no being and no person.

It's not really a single point, even in today's legal landscape. For example, killing a pregnant woman in many states will net criminals two homicide charges, rather than one, because legally, we recognize that the unborn baby is a distinct person whose life was also ended, and not just a "collection of cells".

It's not a question of what the law says in my discussions, it's only a question of what the law should be. So I don't care at all if somebody made a stupid law based upon false assumptions.

The law should be that we don't end the lives of developing human beings merely because they're inconvenient.

The law should be that the mother does what she wants because the developing fetus has no mind, cannot suffer, has never had a mental existence, and so has no moral relevance outside of the woman's wishes like any other part of her body.

You're the one that brought up what the law says:

I was asked for a definition of personhood. I started by saying what I am arguing personhood should be. Then I gave a definition of what personhood is that anybody, even those who disagree with me, could accept. We are arguing about what the law should be, and so that's why I mentioned how personhood is relevant to this discussion.

I disagree. I also very much disagree that a baby "cannot suffer". I'm mildly curious how you reached that (erroneous) conclusion.

In general yes. The exceptions would be related to severe malformations, and significant risk to the life of the mother.
