When you have a nincompoop like Bloomberg as mayor of a major city, along with a complete moron like Obama who doesn't have the slightest clue how the economy works as president, you can expect homelessness to reach record levels. It goes right along with Obama's other "accomplishments" like record numbers on food stamps, high unemployment and decreasing paychecks for Americans.

Legacy of Policy Failures Presents Major Challenge for Next Mayor

21,000 Homeless Children Sleep in Shelters Each Night

NEW YORK - The Coalition for the Homeless released its 2013 State of the Homeless report today showing that for the first time the number of homeless New Yorkers sleeping in emergency shelter each night has passed 50,000 a 61% increase since Mayor Bloomberg took office in January of 2002. The number of homeless children is now over 21,000 per night, also an all-time high.

Unimaginable just a few years ago, New York City now has the shameful distinction of being home to more than 50,000 homeless people, including more than 21,000 children, said Mary Brosnahan, President of the Coalition for the Homeless. This is a tragedy of City Halls own making. Had Mayor Bloomberg simply followed the strategy of previous mayors of both parties and prioritized moving the homeless into permanent affordable housing, there would be thousands fewer families and children in our shelter system today.

As the report shows, the grim numbers are a direct result of the Bloomberg administrations years-long failure to use proven, cost-effective strategies for moving homeless families into affordable homes. Under the Bloomberg Administration which famously promised to cut homelessness by two-thirds New York City has cut off virtually all Federal housing assistance, including public housing and Section 8rental vouchers, for homeless children and families, becoming the first Mayor in modern history to have no housing program for homeless families.

The reports key findings include:

-- Record homelessness: An average 50,135 people slept each night in city shelters in January, 2013, a 19% increase since last year and a 61% increase from when Mayor Bloomberg first took office.

-- Child homelessness continues to surge: In January, an average 11,984 families, up 73% since Mayor Bloomberg took office, and 21,034 children, up 22% from a year ago and 61% from 2002, stayed in shelters each night.

-- Length of stay now over one year: With few affordable housing options, the average length of shelter stay for families with children is up 10% to a record 375 days. Families without children averaged a whopping 484 days in shelter.

-- The 1980s return: Single adult homelessness is at its highest level in decades, with an average 10,840 homeless single adults sleeping each night in municipal shelters, an increase of 11% from a year ago and just shy of the all time high (10,903 single adults, March, 1987)

-- $$$ - The surge of homelessness comes at steep cost to taxpayers. Since Mayor Bloomberg took office, the expenses of the NYC Department of Homeless Services have increased by 77%, from $540.2 million (FY 2002) to $955.3 million (projected for the current FY 2013).

The data do not include the thousands of families made homeless by Hurricane Sandy, or those living in separate shelter systems, including shelters for domestic violence survivors and runaway and homeless youth.

Number of homeless youths on the rise, based on shelter and hotline data
May 27, 2013 - Sara Stokes remembers well the night she became homeless. It was the end of January, but warm like spring. She and her boyfriend at the time, the father of her toddler, were fighting at their apartment. He swung her around, choked her and busted her lip, she recalled.

"And I'm like, this dude is really going to kill me if I don't leave," Stokes, 19, said. She had been living with her ex-boyfriend after her grandmother, who raised her, kicked her out, she said. When he fell asleep that night, she packed a bag of clothes and, certain he wouldn't wake up, walked out the front door. With no place to go, she left her baby behind, where at least she knew he'd have a roof over his head. Stokes' grim experience is just one example of a growing number of youths who are homeless in Illinois.

Although an official count hasn't been taken since 2005, data from the National Runaway Safeline and accounts from youth service providers in Chicago suggest that more and more youths those about 12 to 21 years old are on their own. Those who work closely with homeless youths said a variety of issues prompt children and teens to run away or get kicked out. A slowly recovering economy and high unemployment has also added to familial stress, they said.

Lawrence Herbert, 19, is a part-time cashier at an Evanston restaurant, but he cant make it to a shelter in time for check-in on the three nights each week that he works.

National Runaway Safeline Executive Director Maureen Blaha said the number of youths in Illinois contacting the hotline steadily increased over the past three years. And every year, more say that they're homeless when they call. Beth Cunningham, a youth attorney for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, said shelters she works with turn away children and young adults in increasing and "really disturbing numbers." At The Crib, a shelter for 18- to 24-year-olds in the Lakeview neighborhood, 9 p.m. is a stressful time. That's when the 20 youths who will get beds that night are randomly chosen. On a recent Monday, Lawrence Herbert, 19, originally from Evanston, lucked out. He'd have a place to sleep that night, but that's not always the case.

A part-time cashier at an Evanston restaurant, he can't make it to a shelter in time for check-in on the three nights each week that he works. "There have been nights when I had to sleep on the train, in the cold, or I would like sleep in a park," Herbert said. Herbert said he left home about two months ago after his relationship with his dad had become physically and verbally abusive. Herbert is gay, and he said his dad doesn't accept that. "It was unsafe," Herbert said. "I couldn't live there." More shelters have reached out to the National Runaway Safeline for help when they find themselves overflowing, according to nationwide hotline data. The hotline also recorded an increase in youths who call saying they're homeless over the past decade from 758 a decade ago to 1,956 in 2012. A slight increase in young people who call saying they're already using shelters over the past year, from 655 to 730, was also recorded.

Yet the Crash occurred in the Bush administration.

The disappearance of the trillions of phony welath the Republicans built up to steal will take decades to recover from.

The Republicans would like to speed that process up by making the the poor into the ABJECT poor who would have NO support to avoid the horrors they face when there are 6 people for every job, but the Republicans would like to take away even that meager help like food stamps, unemployment,and minor medical care.

NYC to Track Down, Evaluate 4,000 Homeless
Dec 21, 2015 -- Every one of New York Citys street homeless people a population estimated to be as high as 4,000 will be tracked down and personally evaluated to figure out why theyre sleeping outside, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday.

The street assessments are done by a team of city caseworkers, a force expected to grow to 312 by March from 175 now, with muscle provided by the NYPD where necessary. Seeking to stanch the record-high number of people living in shelters, nearly 58,000; and on the streets, between 3,000 and 4,000; the mayor did a series of radio and television interviews Friday that capped a week of shake-ups of how his administration deals with homelessness, beginning with Tuesdays abruptly announced resignation of his homelessness chief, Gilbert Taylor. We will have the ability to send teams of trained outreach workers who can literally work with each homeless individual on what their needs are encourage them as much as possible off to, you know, get off the streets and get to the services we have available, de Blasio told WNYC radios Brian Lehrer.

The teams main territory is 145th Street to Canal Street, though other homeless hot spots also are expected to be targeted. De Blasio said he encouraged people who were concerned with a particular location to report it to the citys 311 hotline; he promised a team would be on scene within an hour. Were going to have, for each individual on the street, an understanding of what they need to get off the street, he told Lehrer. Each homeless person will be assigned a caseworker, de Blasio said, though under the law anyone has a right to be on the street unless he or she is committing a crime.

Taylors resignation is part of a 90-day review process de Blasio also announced Tuesday. Taylor is being replaced on an interim basis by Steve Banks, commissioner of the citys Human Resources Administration, the welfare agency. De Blasio has blamed the homelessness increase on the cancellation of a housing program by the state, as well as gentrification and other economic conditions such as the 2008 recession. Something went wrong in their life and they ended up on the street, de Blasio told John Gambling on WNYM/970 AM. He added: What will help get them back on their feet?

Homeless people not welcome in airports as officials tighten rules
Sunday 27th December, 2015 - As the homeless population has climbed in major metropolitan areas, anecdotal evidence suggests the number sleeping in airports has also grown

Theyre warm. Safe. Open 24 hours. Accessible by public transportation. Uncrowded at night. And they dont have limits on carrying your possessions with you. For years, many homeless people have spent the night in airports between when the last evening flight lands and the first morning flight departs. But in a number of cities across the country, officials are now cracking down on that unspoken arrangement. To meet our public safety mandate, we will close the LaGuardia terminal to all but ticketed passengers during late night hours, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced on 18 December, promising to arrest violators. Similar announcements were made earlier this year, including at Washington DCs Reagan national airport in October and at Honolulu international airport in March.

As the number of homeless people has climbed in major metropolitan areas like Washington DC and New York City, theres anecdotal evidence that the ranks of people sleeping in airports has similarly grown. One individual, according to Bloomberg, has even lived in LaGuardia for 20 years. The increasing presence of homeless people in terminals has led to complaints from travelers and employees, as well as news coverage of the phenomenon from outlets like CBS New York and the New York Post that purported to expose the practice. In response, officials at LaGuardia in New York will, beginning 2 January, kick out anyone on the premises between 11pm and 4am who doesnt have a ticket. At the national airport outside Washington DC, the closing hours for people without tickets are now between 11.30pm and 4.30am, while Honolulu airport authorities decided to close lobbies and baggage claim areas altogether between 10pm and 5am. Sleeping at the airport was peaceful, quiet and heartwarming, one homeless individual, who chose to remain anonymous, wrote in Washington DCs biweekly street newspaper. You didnt have to worry about people stealing your stuff or robbing you. The person said Reagan national airport reminded me of being home and free. It was my second home.

Other benefits people in the article pointed to included hot and cold running water; access to food; free Wi-Fi, charging stations, even free blankets. Homeless people finding shelter in airports isnt a phenomenon confined to Hawaii and the north-east. In cities across the country, from Cleveland to Orlando to Atlanta, and even international cities like London and Frankfurt, homeless people have been enjoying overnight refuge in airports. Jesse Rabinowitz, an advocacy specialist at the homelessness activist organization Miriams Kitchen, called the airports crackdowns a continuation of the criminalization of homelessness. Rabinowitz, whose Washington-based non-profit works to end chronic homelessness, rattled off a few of the reasons why some people are eschewing shelters and staying in airports instead: Violence, theft, curfews, bed bugs. Many shelters, he noted bluntly, arent safe. Violence is commonplace at homeless shelters. In November, a homeless man was stabbed to death outside a Washington DC shelter. Youre much safer here than in a shelter, a homeless man in LaGuardia told CBS New York. He slept adjacent to a security camera.

Calif. Police Hunt Suspect in Homeless Attacks
July 7, 2016 - A homeless man was attacked and set on fire between downtown San Diego apartments Wednesday, the fourth attack on transients in as many days by the same assailant who has killed two men and left two in critical condition.

Police officials said Wednesday that the person of interest seen in images shared with the public is now a suspect. Homicide Capt. David Nisleit said investigators are sure the man committed all four crimes, although he did not detail why they are certain. He implored the public to help find the man, adding that the department has already received many leads, and plans to follow up on every one. "We really need the public's assistance," Nisleit said. "I truly believe that's how we're going to make this case. Someone's gonna recognize this person and give us who it is, and we're going to find him and arrest him." Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Chief Shelley Zimmerman said cracking the case is the department's highest priority. Officers are informing those who are homeless of the attacks, showing them photos of the suspect, working to connect people with services and shelter, and advising them to be particularly aware of their surroundings. "These evil acts of violence are some of the worst I've seen in my 34 years in law enforcement," Zimmerman said.

Nisleit stopped short of calling the assailant a serial killer, which is defined as a person who commits three or more related homicides, but described the attacks as a series. "We consider him extremely dangerous," Nisleit said. "We need to have him removed from the community as soon as possible." The spree began Sunday. Police said the victims all suffered similar and significant trauma to the upper torso, but would not detail the injuries. The last three attacked had been sleeping; all had been alone. Police don't believe the victims are connected in any way. Angelo De Nardo was the first victim. He was found ablaze under the Interstate 5 bridge at Clairemont Drive in Bay Park about 8 a.m. An autopsy concluded the 53-year-old had suffered extensive injuries before being lit on fire, homicide investigators said.

Police said a man was seen carrying a gas can while running across northbound freeway lanes about two blocks away. He was described as between 30 and 50 years old, wearing a tan or brown jacket or sweatshirt and a baseball cap, and was carrying a backpack. The victims of Monday's attacks were identified Wednesday. Manuel Mason, 61, was found critically injured in the Midway District about 4:50 a.m. He is expected to survive. Shawn Longley, 41, was found dead near the tennis courts at Robb Athletic Field in Ocean Beach about 6:10 a.m. Witnesses to Wednesday's attack heard a commotion and saw one man crouched over another behind Koll Center Apartments south of Broadway at Columbia Street. One man ran to help the victim and yanked a flaming towel off of him, saving him from burns, Nisleit said.

He said the towel had been soaked in a flammable liquid and placed on the 23-year-old victim. He said the man suffered "significant trauma" to his upper torso, but he declined to describe what kind of weapon may have been used. The victim's family had not yet been notified of his condition, so his name was not released. The assailant was described only as a man of medium height and weight, wearing a hooded sweat shirt with the hood drawn tightly around his face, and possibly in jeans. A resident of the nearby Park Row condominiums, who did not want his name published out of concerns for his safety, said he witnessed part of the Wednesday attack after a banging noise woke him.
