Trump neither knows or respects the military. Someone that does doesn't say "I know more than the generals". What he likes is people that have to salute him.

 

Isn't that what their gender is being based on? Seems that's the standard these days.

 

I'm missing the problem.
In the military you pretty much wear what you're told to, wear your hair and facial hair pretty much the way you're told to, and jewelry is in the same category.
So, if you identify as, say, female, but are in point of fact a male, the military can tell you that you must dress as a male, and follow the male dress code.
Or, vice versa.
Not much discussion tolerated.

So the most visible issue is addressed by commanders simply telling soldiers to dress according to their original sex.

Now. There's the issue of potential blackmail by foreign actors if they discover a trans in the military. That becomes a non issue when the Trans declares themselves.

As I recall, the military does not provide medical care or cosmetic surgery or "non essential" surgery to any military member, so the issue of sex change operations becomes moot with perhaps a bit of clarification of the rules.

So the question becomes "can they do the job".
If the answer is yes, wonderful, go do your job.
If the answer is no, then you retrain, reclassify, or dismiss from the military.

So I'm missing the problem.

They didn't ban trans people. They banned people with gender dysphoria. Many trans people do not have gender dysphoria.

Skin pigment is different from sex. The military has always separated males from females. So one day you are male and the next day you are female -- the military doesn't need that to contend with.
Blacks fought for the Union in the Civil War, in WW1, in WW2, and on and on.
The military has always tried to keep queers out of the males barracks, and you know why. Trump also knows why.
