A victory for the religious Right. 7-2 on the vote. Once again.....the leftness takes another loss. What say ye?

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that Missouri's decision to prevent a church-operated daycare and preschool from receiving funding from a state program was unconstitutional.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the Supreme Court's 7-2 opinion, which reversed the federal appeals court's ruling and sent the case back to the lower court for additional proceedings.

The dispute in Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia v. Comer involved a state program that provided funding to nonprofits to resurface playgrounds, which ran into conflict with a provision of the Missouri Constitution that blocks public funds from directly or indirectly assisting any church, sect or religion.

"The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has not subjected anyone to chains or torture on account of religion. And the result of the state's policy is nothing so dramatic as the denial of political office," Roberts wrote in the high court's opinion. "The consequence is in all likelihood, a few extra scraped knees. But the exclusion of Trinity Lutheran from a public benefit for which it is otherwise qualified, solely because it is a church, is odious to our Constitution all the same, and cannot stand."

Tempers flared among the justices during oral arguments, particularly among Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Samuel Alito. Sotomayor said she thought the playground is part of the church's ministry and highlighted the United States' tradition of not funding religious institutions.

Alito subsequently called Sotomayor out by name during the arguments. Alito questioned Trinity Lutheran's lawyer about whether the attorney agreed with Sotomayor's suggestion that the Missouri Constitution's provision had an "admirable tradition," which gave Trinity Lutheran's representation the opportunity to talk about the provision's roots in "anti-Catholic bigotry.".....snip~

    Vitctory for the religious right?

Loss for the rights of our countrymen so a few demagogues that squeal like pigs can continue to milk the coffers of the tax payer?

    Hypocrisy at its finest.

The alt-left lost the right to dictate idiotic laws based on faulty interpretations of the Constitution.........as least on this one narrow situation. They will continue to push for idiotic laws based on faulty interpretations of the Constitution wherever someone doesn't agree with them.

But you have no problem with illegals milking the coffers of the taxpayer...hypocrisy at its finest. Most of these illegals are Catholic and some send their kids to Catholic schools...

Well the leftness lost twice in the SCOTUS today. One with Trumps travel ban. The other over Religious Freedom.

After Kennedy retires and Trump puts another Conservative Judge on the Court. They wont be getting much support on their tissue issues. For decades to come.

Then should we start taxing them ?

Would it be OK if a Muslim Church got state funds ?

And if a room full of day care children caught on fire leftists would invoke the fake "separation of church and state" argument to keep the fire trucks away while the building burned to the ground.

Fine then monitor them and the second they preach or mention religion tax the church like an McDonald's on their income from donations and other sources including the funding they get for the day care. That would be fair.

I generally side with churches on many of these freedom issues, but something about funding a playground doesn't pass the smell test even for me.

Bullshit. The members of that church are taxpayers, too, just like the members of ALL THE OTHER NON-PROFITS THE GRANTS ARE INTENDED FOR.

You can bet that the muslims and all of the other religious outfits will be getting their share of the goodies. This could end up costing the States $Billions unless they cancel the programs within the week.

WTH is your problem? The grant program was for NON-PROFITS. Der. Read the decision, Churches are not excluded, and NO, you don't get to "punish" them for practicing their faith , either. The Obama era of leftist intolerance is OVER at the USSC...

Of which churches qualified with their Tax Exempt status. So I ask again, should we start taxing them when they receive government benefits ? Should they be allowed to take from both ends for financial gain ?

Well, I think my stance is pretty clear. They are here illegally, we should deport them. I don't understand why this is an issue, honestly. I mean I get the narrative - liberals want them here to pad democrat votes - but I don't think that is an over arching plot of the democrats in general.

If they're using social security numbers, I disagree with that also. And again they should be deported.
