They are not trying to keep the death rate down directly. They are trying to keep the heath system from being overwhelmed, thus raising the death rate.

The flu does kill tens of thousands every year, and that's even with the flu vaccines most of us take each year. BTW, just because the flu is different from covid19 does not mean the same exact precautions used to prevent contracting the flu also apply to covid19.
