Five people have died in the U.S. since yesterday. That compares easily to the number of people who died last year and the year before that of the common cold or illnesses brought on by the common cold such as pneumonia.

In 2018, an average 641 people died of lung cancer in the U.S.

Are we going a little overboard on all this? Just asking.

45 people have died in the U.S., 41 in Seattle-area nursing homes.

In Italy, a country with one of the world’s oldest populations, a March 4 analysis by the national health institute found that of the 105 patients who died from the virus, the average age was 81. This put a 20-year gap between the average age of people who tested positive for the virus and the deceased, the institute said. On Friday, an ICU physician in Lombardy — the epicenter of Italy’s outbreak — told JAMA there have been only two deaths of people under the age of 50.

Trump should have passed this on to the experts from the get go, trying to put up the mission accomplished sign so early on and praising himself rarely works out well

Trump's task force has to walk on egg shells for fear of bruising Trump's ego, but glad we have them as getting some facts out of them in between their having to daily praise Trump

You will pardon me, but I think the U.S. numbers are more relevant. When dealing with the entire world, there are far too many variables. Beside, the numbers in the U.S. are the numbers that affect Americans. What happens in China, Italy, and France as it pertains to this virus does not affect Americans.

It is simple: obama was president then so the lefty media's objective was to project calm to benefit him.

Since they hate Trump the media does everything it can to stoke chaos and panic.

We're talking about the flu, not pneumonia. Can you get one from the other....yes but you can also get it without the flu.
    Try to focus.

The only "narrative" falling apart is your own. You have come back with nothing. People talk about the flu, you talk about pneumonia. Sure, that makes sense. People talk about gun deaths, you talk about car deaths. Same tactic. Didn't work then, doesn't now.

Are you reading stories about what the virus is doing to people's lungs in Italy, like this dumb assed one from News Week, where they act as if people living in the filt of Chinese big cities are comparable to any Western nation.

I'm reading about Italy itself. They're dropping like flies over there, right now.

They call it COVID-19 pneumonia because the virus leads to pneumonia, and 5%-10% of people die from pneumonia. It's a respiratory virus, hence the worry for pneumonia.

But are you reading about how the virus attacks and causes "abnormalities in the lungs?"

Could the Democrats shut down travel? No.....so your statement has no point.
Trump is the one that got rid of the staff for just such a purpose in 2018. Playing catch up is always his game plan.
I don't know what a Christian travel ban is. I thought we only did that for Muslims.
And still has done nothing about it. No plan. Tariffs don't make us rely on China any less and hurt us more. Proven fact.
    Apples and Oranges......nice try.
Perhaps you will see what the rest of the world sees about Trump. It will be hard to face but you will be better for it. "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain."
He has done nothing. A tax cut that did nothing for the working person.Obama did so much more with a Congress completly hostile to him.
    Laughably false
I realize what he is now. I have hope you will someday.

While that is true, it was a global story well before it was a US story. The OP questions why the panic, and I feel it is relevant to include statistics preceding when the US had sufficient sample size. The sell off in wall street for instance has not taken place in a vacuum where only the US infections / deaths are being accounted for. The US media has used statistics from abroad to try and explain what we may expect here given the US sample size was a paltry < 100 even 2 weeks ago.

I personally have been following this very closely, and when Italy started to spike up to ~300 infections, I went out and bought up enough rations to self quarantine for ~3 months. There was not a run on the grocery store then. But if you are in a high infection area right now like New York, then you may have noticed the Costco with 2,500 people at times when there are typically less than 1/10 of that amount. Or so that is what I hear from a coworker who lives there. The higher mortality rates reported in the news from other countries, the stories of swamped medical facilities in Italy, and the accelerating global infection rate are all relevant and have been in the news for weeks.

But back to comparing statistics, we really just don't have the data to do a real comparison with COVID-19 vs H1N1 at this early stage if you want to stick to just the US. The US had 62 confirmed cases as of March 1st. We have 1992 either confirmed or presumptive right now. H1N1 after 2 months had ~1,600 confirmed cases. No word on presumptive ones, but that compares with ~1,300 confirmed in US right now. At that time, there was only a single H1N1 death in the US.

Where we be after COVID-19 has been spreading in the community for 60 days? Who knows... but the fact that it's having such a drastic impact on life that H1N1 didn't (cancelled events, travel bans, lots of tech companies working from home, quarantines in cities, universities / schools closing), the pure rate of spread / death numbers are going to be completely incomparable. The raw mortality rate on the other hand, we should be able to extrapolate that out better after maybe another 1-2 weeks.

It happened again today. Trump was asked by a reporter about a health agency he eliminated, a health agency designed to help in a pandemic. Trump replied, "I don't know anything about it."

When confronted with the consequences of decisions made by his administration, how many times has Trump said he knows nothing about it and tries to place the blame on someone else? How many times have writers ridiculed Trump for this ploy?

He may be right. If Trump is a mere figurehead and someone else is running the government, it stands to reason that he would be remarkably uninformed and be unaware of decisions made in his name.

Well, according to Trump, the elimination of this agency was done in his name and he knew nothing about it. We also know, particularly when it comes to the covid-19 crisis, he is remarkably uninformed. Even today, with the declaration of a national emergency, he often sounded lost, and what is this about closing our borders? Our borders are not closed.

Also, he denied responsibility of the errors made by his administration in this crisis, and there were many. Pence and the medical experts are owing up to them, but not Trump. He knows nothing about those errors, and he certainly did not make them.

Again, all this fits if Trump is only a figurehead. He confirms that nearly every day.

I just saw a shot on TV showing the line of people at O'Hara coming back from Europe. The spread from that line will be worse than if they just let everybody back in.
Another case of not understanding the magnitude of a problem.

That was back when adults ran the country and we could rest easy knowing that the most qualified people were making decisions. Now a retard is in charge and he picks his advisers based on whether they say nice things about him. All we can hope is that Trump's political appointees are being advised by career people who actually know what they're doing.

Yeah after it was already here, and then claimed it was contained and in a couple of days would be near ZERO cases!!! Remember?
    https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing...bers-coronavirus-task-force-press-conference/

And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done.

Except he DID know about it!!!
First of all Sharod Brown wrote him a letter demanding answers to why he fired the staff.
And secondly he admitted it in a press briefing in 2018 claiming he was a business person who doesn't like having people around doing nothing when you don't need them.
