The Taliban is taking over Afghanistan right now. (August 2021)

The Taliban has already seized half of the country's provincial capitals.

Was that entire war for nothing? (2001-2005)

You know what that's going to mean for women's rights in the country.

Is the Biden Administration going to take responsibility for this?

Is there going to be another 9/11 style terrorist attack in the near future?

The Taliban has already seized a lot of weapons and supplies that were handed over by the US to the Afghani government, so they are more armed than ever.

related thread: Taliban Seizes US Weapons, Artillery, Armored Tanks in Afghanistan #Biden effect

3500 US and NATO soldiers died in that Afghanistan war, to liberate the country from the Taliban. If the US abandons them and then later has to invade the country again, probably another 3500 US soldiers are going to have to die.
The US might not even be able to afford to carry out such a war all over again.
Many estimate the total costs of that war at around $2 trillion. Since then the US is in worse financial shape. If the US doesn't intervene now, it's going to get a whole lot more expensive to wage a war later once the Taliban have established themselves again.

"Is there going to be another 9/11 style terrorist attack in the near future?"

this is the scariest part, this 20 year war hurt us, when we do end it, will someone try to poke us again to get us to over-react again... probably

we should have just did a quick aerial strike in retaliation and left, let the locals police their own

it would be like a dozen Americans doing this to Russia and Russia spent 20 years attacking us, trying to change us, they would never succeed

911 was a reaction to our bases in Saudi Arabia - our perpetual western military presence on hallowed soil and making revolution against the stupendously horrible government of Saudi Arabia impossible.

Us leaving Afg has no such element whatsoever.

As sad as it might seem, what has come from this is the knowledge that Afghanistan as a whole is not particularly interested in defending western style government.

    >> How long do you think it would take for us to continue sending kids to die in Afghanistan to improve that situation to the extend that citizens of that country are ready to defend western style government?

I think you have to go beyond personal attacks if you actually want to make a point.

The Peace Treaty was signed during Trump's presidency...

Now that being said, I don't know. I don't think it will go over well. It's certainly a shock to the US who has to reckon with everything that happened. This wasn't the failure of the Biden administration so much as the failure of generations of Americans.

But Biden is the face of the failure. It might not be fair, but I don't care.

I don't like defending the Biden administration but I don't think they should take responsibility for this.

The Taliban takes over Afghanistan because Afghanistan let's it. At a certain point you have to step back and let them do it on their own.

The United States can't forever buttress every Nation that's being threatened by malcontents within it.

If Afghanistan wanted to be free from the Taliban they would drive them out.

If we spent 50 years there and left the same thing would probably happen.

Probably but honestly? I don't blame him when we've had Democrats and Republicans making these same promises for years now. The buck stops with Biden sure, but this is also what happens when there is a delay in the transition of a president.

Since when do you advocate for president's taking personal responsibility? Your posts on PF suggest President's shouldn't be personally responsible at all.

When he’s not on vacation he’s out to lunch or stuck in an elevator that doesn’t go to the top.

With all the crap going on right now how can he go on vacation? I think that’s his was of avoiding answering questions.

Gonna have to agree with that.

With us gone I’m wondering if/when China will make a play for them. They seem to attract themselves to the places we don’t have good relations with.

    You should care.

We need to know what the steps were that led to this situation.

Of course if someone still in politics made serious mistakes, that is important to know.

We need to understand this issue so we can better choose next steps in Afg/region and so that we don't make similar mistakes in the future.

We do NOT do that well. We seem to have learned NOTHING from Vietnam for example.

Dude you literally changed your post after I replied to it. Stop proving my point.

I wish hadn't come to this. So much death, all for what? Nothing. Just nothing. I know we're putting troops back to slow down the advance to give us time to evacuate people but will it be enough? Probably not.

All I changed was adding the abc news headline. My words did not change.

We need to find out how Biden was claiming the Afghans would be able to defend their country to this rapid takeover in less than a months time.

needn't care. I'll leave that to the amazing contingent of military experts we are blessed with here at PF. Me, I am utterly ignorant of such things. But if I can tar the Democrats with the brush of failure there will be something to salvage from this fiasco.
