The Economist: Making it in America - excerpt:
The trend around this forum recently has been jobs, jobs, jobs. Well, lo and behold, there ARE jobs out there for the taking.

The only problem is that those jobs going are not the same ones as a quarter of century ago (1992). Automation has taken its toll on Manufacturing centers through the the US, but for those with the right qualifications the jobs are back.

What right qualifications. The kind that only a post-secondary degree will obtain? And where do you get that kind of degree. Free, gratis and for nothing, if you live in Europe.

In the US, anywhere from $10/20K a year - and lotsa luck finding a scholarship somewhere!

The average annual cost of an Associate's Degree at a public institution of higher learning*:
-Tuition and other fees = $3520
    -Room and board = $8,060
    Total (per year) = $11,580

Wanna get in? Show me da muney!

Some good news from the National Center for Education Statistics (Dept. of Education), quote:

So, boys-'n-girls, get that HS-degree, then at least "go for the golden-ring" on the Associate's Degree merry-go-round. If you don't try, it will never ever happen ... !

If you were hiring for a position that required specialized training in your manufacturing plant, would a candidate with a 4 college year degree and no work experience be more attractive than a candidate with a HS diploma and 4 years working as a floor sweeper with excellent attendance and reference?

If it were me, I would hire and train the floor sweeper. Work ethic, aptitude, experience, and attitude are way more important than a college degree for most jobs in manufacturing. Especially in situations where an investment in training is necessary (operating robotic equipment, etc).

    1) so much is free in France but it as poor as our poorest state because welfare make people lazy
    2) France always has 10% unemployment ( twice USA) so free education obviously does not get folks jobs
    as Layfayette imagines

exactly, if a company needs a job filled it will train a person for it rather than go bankrupt. there is no need for yet another liberal welfare program, especially when on line stem education is free anyway.

    Nope.

The work to be done usually describes aptly the type of person necessary to perform it - especially there is any need of a particularly skill.

One doesn't hire an accountant to either sweep-floors or manipulate manufacturing machines; and neither will an accountant accept such a job - typically they need not. And, if indeed, you hire an accountant to sweep floors then if they accept you are paying for a very expensive floor-sweeper ...

Back to this tired thread huh? These jobs don't need college, they need people with a basic education and a willingness to work a learn. It's that willingness to work that's the hardest to find.

Tiring for you because the question is always the same and so is the answer.

You make an interesting speculation without a shred of proof.

The jobs that have left are mostly manual, and largely from the Manufacturing Industries.

Btw, they aint comin back ...

    exactly,
1)liberalism is about always more welfare in order to cripple people and make them dependent libcommie voters
    2) Layfayette says create jobs with free education while France does this and has double the USA unemployment. Proof that its about crippling people not helping them.

Progressivism is always about sharing the market-economy that we all contribute to provide the goods/services that we want. But we do it fairly and equitably, not with a bunch of ***** bent upon enriching themselves for no other purpose than to accumulate Wealth much more than they will ever need.

I say "free education" is necessary to improve the intellectual ability of a people. Not just for jobs, but to improve political outcomes. At least the French would never have patched together an Electoral College manipulable by a first-class Dork to obtain the presidency.

So, yes, in that respect they are indeed smarter than we Yanks.

Why introduce a new word like progressive if not to confuse people??? Sanders is a libcommie socialist and open about it!! You should embrace your libcommieism

Why say sharing when you mean violent taxing at gunpoint thus discouraging both the payer and payee from working until 120 million have slowly starved to death?

fair is what Amazon does. They charge everyone the same; no discrimination. They don't raise prices for the rich to lower them for the poor. Govt should be fair too rather than discourage everyone fro working!!

    French have free education and
    1) they sided with the Nazis
    2) sent Jews to concentration camps.
    3) live in poverty about like our poorest state, Arkansas
    4) have double the unemployment despite free education
    5) are totally dependent on America for national defense
    6) Now out of guilt they have invited in Muslims who want to kill them and formed a police to stop Muslims hell bent on killing them. That's an improved outcome to a libcommie?

I've mentioned the "way" a thousand times. Increase upper-income taxation and spend the money where necessary (on Education and Health Care).

You are blind to the necessity of both.

PS: You go on Ignore (btw).

    Good for you.

But not for the rest of us on this planet - that is NOT how a market-economy works in general.

And expecting a market-economy to work for others as it does for you is pure tomfoolery ...

    Ignore? Can't handle the truth?

Where in your OP does it mention anything about the need for college educated job applicants? Perhaps I missed it, as I only quickly scanned it a couple of times.

How would a liberal arts degree benefit a factory floor machine operator?

I have owned highly technical manufacturing businesses for over 35 years. I have employed specialized engineers, where a 4 year degree in engineering is preferred. However, they have been only a fraction of the overall employee population of my companies.

Reflecting on my experience, and relating it to your position, it seems clear to me you have little to no real world experience in manufacturing, and you're simply inserting an ideological objective into a topic you think applies to it.

I said post-secondary education. NEVER "college education".

There's a "big difference", not only in cost but future incomes. And some with inherent talents make as much in a lifetime as bakers as an top-notch engineer. But, baking is something you LEARN typically in a vocational school. (Meaning "post-secondary".)

But, no post-secondary education leads you into the 45%-class of Americans who are earning below the median income of $45K a year with increasingly higher job-turnover.

Time to move-right-along - when plain English doesn't get through ...

Ok. Where does it say in the OP a post-secondary education is required to fill these jobs?

I guess the plain English of real world experience means little in the face of your theories and socialist fantasies. What those theories and socialist fantasies run from is the truth behind those income figures.

It would be interesting to read honest analysis for this income/education disparity, rather than it's twisted use to push for free educations. Consider how many college graduates can't find jobs. How can that be? Consider how many students enter post-secondary educations, never to finish, or, never to apply the particular knowledge gained to the profession they later work in.

The grand excuse by those pushing these "free education" pieces is that at least they were exposed to higher learning, which improves the overall knowledge of the student. I haven't seen that in any applicant to my business. How many tests show a large percentage of post-secondary graduates and college students can't identify major countries around the globe.

Since it's apparent you see yourself postulating from a lofty perch by your snarky comments, I will leave you to your devices.

Europe usually has double the unemployment of the USA so we should do the opposite of what they do!
