Apparently the country is stronger than that, because John Quincy Adams was chosen as president by Congress in his first election when he had lost both the Electoral College and the popular vote. And yet the still fairly new republic survived. Lincoln won just 40% of the popular vote but won the Electoral College in a four-way split. It led to all-out war, but I think that was inevitable given Dred Scott.

Do you have a link that shows how a candidate could win less than a quarter of the popular vote and still win the Electoral College? I'd like to see how that breaks down. I'm guessing that 100% of the left-wing states like California would have to go Democrat while only 50%+1 of the remainder voted Republican, which of course is totally unrealistic.

It’s actually just 22% — I agree unrealistic but completely possible with our system.

Your statements here just disenfranchised half of the citizens of this country living in about 80 to 90 percent of the country. Kind of why we have an Electoral College! Kind of why the framers were right! Well, not kind of. Absolutely positively why the framers were right!! The elimination of the EC will lead to the fall of the Republic!

Democrats are upset because they lost in 2000 and 2016 while getting more votes, but it was less than 50%, they lost three fifths of the states, most counties and square miles. Gore demanded a recount in one county. Bush could have demanded a recount for the whole country. We can't have the Presidency vacant for 6 months recounting. The EC is there to give the wise choice in tough cases. They used to be non-partisan.
